I'll

take the starter over the reliever any and every day. Barnes could be a #2, and will probably be a #3-4 starter. Reed will have to excel as a closer to be more valuable.

"will probably be?"

By definition, there are only 120 guys in the entire majors who qualify as #4 starters or better. Saying that the ~50th best pitching prospect “will probably be” that good isn’t remotely realistic.

I like Barnes, but his 50th percentile outcome is as a generic bullpen arm after he washes out of the rotation; getting a #4 starter out of him, let alone more than that, would be a success. And I’ll take Reed’s very high probability of a positive contribution over the higher upside of a possible #2 starter.
