Chad Bettis: Undervalued or Unrealistic?

A few days ago, MiLB.com ran a piece on Chad Bettis and his "bag of tricks". As a Bettis owner in a dynasty league I am somewhat familar with his repetoire and while his long-term projection varies from source to source, there is no denying the fact that he dominated the California League in 2011. He's a 22 year old right hander in the Colorado Rockies organization, a product of the 2010 draft, and if the below article has any truth to it, he's the most under-scouted pitcher in the minor leagues today.

His 2011 line for Modesto: 169.2 IP-12 W 5 L-184 K 45 BB-72 ER 3.34 ERA-1.102 WHIP-142 H 10 HR

Via John's 2012 Prospect Handbook, Bettis boasts four pitches, though only two of them are currently seen as major league quality. He has a fastball that sits in the 93-95 range and can reach as high as 98 mph. His slider has been described as "wicked" and as unless that scout is from Boston, I'm betting that it truly is. He also has a curve and a change but those pitches are not dependable, at least not from the scouting perspective.

Bettis has a different version of his repertoire. He claims he has six pitches, which includes a four-seam and a two-seam fastball, a curve, a slider, a two-seam changeup, and a no-seam changeup. Yes, you read that correctly, a no-seam changeup.

Undervalued

Bettis has been a prospect that I’ve really liked and followed for awhile. I think he’s got high end #3/low end #2 starter potential, and at worst will settle in as a high leverage RP.

overrated

until he develops the changeup he is a reliever. So if people are viewing him as a #2 or #3 starter like Cheezhead stated, then he is being WAY overrated.

He is going to pitch the whole year at 23 years old so if he doesn’t show big improvement with the change the Rox are likely to just move him to the pen where he profiles best. I could see him coming up for the Rox at the end up the year in the pen and staying in that role for good

If he ends up in the pen and as a closer, then he isn't overrated.

Especially in the back end of a top 100 prospect list where he is usually appearing. He has a lot of potential and if his worst case scenario is in the pen and eventually as a closer, then to me he is underrated.
