Does anybody here know a lot about this kid? On what little video I’ve seen or, scouting reports I have read, he doesn’t knock me out but . . . wow, he went from A to A+ to AA and, didn’t miss a beat - impressive.

Jays fan here - there’s not a lot out there, especially in terms of video and traditional scouting reports. A real sleeper, played SS and pitched in HS, had a commitment to college where I believe the focus was going to be on SS, but the Jays were interested solely as a P. If you haven’t already come across it, here’s a link to a profile done by a Jays blog prior to 2011. Take it with a grain of salt, especially some of the inferences, but it gives some good background.

Looks like Perez and Erlin will be next two on

Looking at the 3rd and 4th place vote getters right now, Harvey and Wheeler. I have Harvey ahead of Wheeler personally. Wheeler has one year age advantage, but Harvey has made it to AA and been successful already while Wheeler played out the year in A+.

Harvey: 27.5 K%, 8.3 BB%, with a .331 BABIP and a 2.91 FIP.
Wheeler: 26.1% K%, 10.5 BB%, with a .309 BABIP and a 3.26 FIP.

To me, it seems Harvey has performed better at a higher level, and with room to improve once his BABIP normalizes. Are the Wheeler supporters putting too much stock into his 27 IP after the trade? His BB rate dropped by 3 BB/9, but I don’t believe that is sustainable going forward. Just curious what Wheeler supporters see in him to put him above Harvey.

Wheeler vs Sampson

To continue on the Wheeler questioning, I wanted to chime in on how he and Keyvius Sampson compare statisticaly thus far. Both guys have pitched close to the same amount of innings in their young careers:

Wheeler - 174 IP, 147 H (7.6/9), 7 HR (.4/9), 90bb (4.7/9), 199k (10.3/9)
Sampson - 169 IP, 120 H (6.4/9) 12 HR (.6/9), 69BB (3.7/9), 209k (11.1/9)

Wheeler was at high-A this year as a 21 year old where Sampson was at low-A as a 20 year old. There has been talk of Sampson making the leap to AA to start 2012, which would do wonders comparing these two on a equal playing field. Overall in 2011 opponents hit .225/.319/.348 off Wheeler, but lefties in particular gave him a decent amount of trouble, hitting .277/.376/.445 off him, with a strange set of #’s: 10.4 h/9, 6bb/9 & 12k/9, 1.84 whip. On the other hand righties hit only .193/.283/.290 off of him, but with a 9k/9 rate. Strange numbers.

Opponents hit .192/.284/.303 off Sampson in 2011 with no noticeable splits - .579 OPS & 10.6k/9 vs LHB; .596 OPS with 11.3k/9 vs. RHB - his year at Ft. Wayne was more impressive in my opinion then what guys like Peavy, Latos & Castro did at the same level before him. With his size and results, he offers several similarities to Peavy, whom BA ranked as the 40th best prospect following his Ft. Wayne campaign 10 years ago.

Prospect wise I think these two are very close, and I have been more impressed with Sampson then I have Wheeler in their young careers so I would give him the edge.
