This one isn't particularly close for me
Bell has big time upside but is a long way off and has a pretty low floor. Odorizzi has #2 upside with a solid floor and isn’t too far off from contributing at the MLB level.

Maybe
Getting creamed for nearly two longballs a game in AA ball (13 in 68.2 ) doesn’t make me think he is close to contributing in the big leagues personally. This said, I have no idea how good Bell will become but, I’ll take him anyways.

Eh
I voted Bell, probably out of homerism, but his age scares me. Old high schooler. Will turn 20 next season I believe.

are we ignoring hitting environments?
He found himself in a pretty dang nice hitter’s park. Considering his minor league track record, that isn’t a problem I forsee him having with the Royals. To further illustrate the point here is a comparisson of the park factors for hr’s:
NW Ark (AA) - 127 vs LH / 91 vs RH
KC Royals - 71 vs LH / 85 vs RH
His mark in AA clearly looks like the outlier, and with the PF’s I wouldn’t jump on him at all for his showing there. He could be up in second half, which I too would considering being not too far off from contributing at the MLB level.
If you can admit that the park played a role in his hr’s allowed at AA, and thus his opponents slugging percentage (.458) was artifically boosted, you can imagine what a more neutral environment would do to his already solid other slash marks .254/.314.
On my own list, I would have Odorizzi ahead of numerous players already selected. I expect the non-general public rankings will all have him in their top-50’s, and for good reason.
Josh Bell needs some AB’s before he’s outranking the likes of Jake Odorizzi, IMO.

Well put
I am in total agreement with you Willy. I have Odorizzi in my top 40 overall personally.
by cookiedabookie on Dec 30, 2025 1:41 AM EST up reply actions
Good points
You could be right. I will say that very good big league starters are usually really good in AA, not decent though. Maybe he needs a full season at AA before we starrt thrtowing him out there in the big leagues.
The park will help him in the show, yes, but it hasn’t stopped lots of Royals from putting up terrioble numbers over the past decade so i don’t see that argument that clearly.

Well he was only 21 in AA
So that is pretty young, even for successful big league starters, to reach that level. His BB-rate was steady, the HR-rate was partly due to ballpark factors, as Willy states above. The only real concern is his deterioration in K-rate, but in the 260+ IP before AA, he had very good K-rates, so I won’t weigh the 68 AA innings as a 21 year old that heavily yet.

I like Jake
. . but giving up longballs in the minors is always a concern for me. He’s young and, has a lot going for him but, getting hit hard tends to get worse the more a kid pitcher accends the ladder, not better - park or, no park. We’ll see though. It worked for Jeremy Hellickson after his debut in AA.

I wouldn't say he got creamed
I agree, 13 longballs in 12 starts isn’t a recipe for success. However, Kauffman Stadium is much more pitcher friendly compared NW Arkansas when it comes to HR/9, especially for LH hitters which accounted for 9 of the 13 HRs allowed.
He had a strong 1st half in High-A and earned a promotion to AA @ 21 yrs old. He was the youngest pitcher on the staff the 2nd half of the season.
Even with the AA homers, career minor league numbers:
HR/9 K/9 K/BB
0.8 _ 9.5 _ 3.5
His ERA was 3.30 on the road in AA.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in KC in 2012. But even if it takes another year, he’s definitely closer to contributing on the MLB level than a 19yr old HS kid who hasn’t taken his 1st pro AB yet.
by Captain Jeter on Dec 30, 2025 2:57 AM EST up reply actions
True,all of it
. . but, again, it doesn’t matter who is closer, does it? It matters who one thinks will have the better career. Odorizzi looks farther away to me than some as well. Making the jump from very effecitve A+ pitcher to, the same at AA is not a step that we can always assume.
This said, I can certainly see taking his career over Bell’s though. I have no idea how good Bell really is or, will be. I’m still trying bring that picture into focus.

closeness
directly impacts the likelihood of someone having a better career, especially with pitchers, because of added injury risk for someone who is farther away (more years in the minors means more years before they can help out the major league club, and thus more years filled with potential injury)

I think even that is too early personally
I have a feeling we will be much higher on Bell than other lists - although that could look good for the community in the future, I suppose.

KG
Has him as a 5 star spec. I was somewhat against him in the hitter polls but that was partially because I liked Gose and Springer a lot. Also, I think we’ve put a lot of pitching on this list pretty early and I think the queued up hitters are just better at this point.
by auclairkeithbc on Dec 29, 2025 10:43 PM EST up reply actions
I didn;t really like his Pirates list
Thought he put way too much into the ceiling for Heredia and Bell - didnt see either getting 5 stars.
Of course, only time will tell, but one would think the failure rates alone would precule putting either at 5 star.
