This one is close, but I have Vizcaino a few spots ahead of Cuthbert.

Close call (much closer for me than it was with Robert Erlin v. CC).

Here's the thing
People always say this statement about any given young player who played well in full-season baseball “I wan’t see ____ perform at higher levels before I vote for him”
However, guys who are 18 and played where and, how well, a kid like Cuthbert did, perform easily better in the big leagues going forward than players like say, Brett Jackson or, guys like that - a lot better on average. The young players ballplayers are MORE reliable, not less reliable than the closer to majors, older ballplayers. It doesn’t stop people from saying it though
Anywho, I like Cuthbert better than Vizcaino because Arroys is going to pitch in relief, isn’t he?

The question is
If he were on a team that could use RP help and SP help, where would you want to use him? And do you think he’d work out and hold up as a SP if that was your choice? The probability of Vizcaino actually being moved to the pen on his particular team shouldn’t affect his status. The same is true for J.J. Hoover (obviously a lesser prospect - but possibly more suited for a starting role than Vizcaino).

You always
. . state this as a fact, because you are so sure of it. I am not as sure as you are of this though. For instance, I agree with you in the case of Alonso - he will be a first-baseman soon, stupid to evaluate him as a leftfielder, etc.
In Arrodys case though, if he is depoloyed for his entire career as a reliever I have to take that into account when evealuating his future. I would think, even if this is not exactly fair to him.

Hmmm
We have a fundamental difference in what the point of prospect evaluation is. I think we figured that out in some other recent debate…the Erlin topic. You think the point of evaluating prospects is for us to make bets on who will actually end up having the better career based on all the foreseeable factors that might affect their development, fairly or unfairly. I think it is to evaluate their potential, and ignore the specific factors that might be foreseeable that might hinder their development assuming it isn’t a fault of the player himself that is the cause of that hindrance.

so you're basically saying
you rank prospects off only their perfect world scenarios?
by blue bulldog on Dec 17, 2025 6:03 PM EST up reply actions
I took it to mean that he ranks them off of things they can actually control.
If a guy is graded a B+ pitching prospect with ace upside, but his organization has Felix Hernandez, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Tim Lincecum, and Clayton Kershaw in its rotation, why should we penalize the prospect? It doesn’t effect his talent level.

this
i rank them based on which one i’d rather add to my theoretical team, right now, where my guys start developing him from here on out.

I think Viz should be a starter
He has nasty stuff, and could do quite well if given the chance. I think we are a year removed from the more serious injury concerns, so give him a chance. If he proves he can’t stay healthy in the majors, then put him in the pen.
Wondering, should the Braves trade for McCutchen? Could offer Arodys, Minor, Simmons, plus a few further away C+ types.
by cookiedabookie on Dec 17, 2025 2:34 PM EST up reply actions
This is not realistic
. . at all. If a pitcher has a hard time staying healthy as a starter, you cannot move him to the pen and think he will stay healthy there.

But he hasn't had issues staying healthy this year
And last year there was fear of surgery, but nothing came out of it. Pedro Martinez used to have the same wrap when he was on the Dodgers in the minors, that he was going to be in the bullpen because he wouldn’t stay healthy. Now I am not saying Viz is comparable to Pedro ability-wise (really who is?), but smaller right-handers have a habit of getting labeled “injury-proned”. Plus, there really is no definitive prove that bullpen work is better for one’s health than starting rotation work. All I am saying is give him a chance, if he does have health problems, move him to the pen - he can still be dominant there, just in less innings.
by cookiedabookie on Dec 17, 2025 11:15 PM EST up reply actions
"because Arroys is going to pitch in relief, isn’t he?"
I’ve been told he will go to ST next year as a starter.
The relief pitching he did this year was more of a TJ rehab assignment than a positional change, it was done to give him more opportunities to throw and improve stamina.
You don’t take a potential #2 or 3 starter and turn him into a sixth or seventh inning reliever unless he completely fails as a starter.
See Joba Chamberlain.
by Kelsdad on Dec 17, 2025 1:49 PM EST reply actions
well
i’d say he will not be used as a starter if he stays with atlanta. the real question is, again, whether or not he SHOULD be used as a starter, and that is a reasonable question.

"whether or not he SHOULD be used as a starter, and that is a reasonable question."
Not disagreeing, and he certainly would have more trade value as a starter.
by Kelsdad on Dec 17, 2025 3:04 PM EST up reply actions
yes of course
if the team trading for him thought he was going to hold up as a starter.
