Give me the guy who is already a slightly above average 1B
Instead of someone who we hope will be an above average pitcher, and has a ways to go to get there.
by auclairkeithbc on Nov 25, 2025 2:57 PM EST up reply actions
I disagree
Yonder is going to be 25 next year, has yet to show great power in the minors, and is an average defensive first basemen playing a horrible LF due to being blocked. Turner is coming off his age 20 season split between AA and AAA, showing above average peripherals and stuff which projects even better future performance. I will take Turner, if for no other reason than his four year advantage in accumulating MLB value. However, I am concerned Turner is being rushed (an MO for the Tigers with young pitching), and he could benefit from an entire year at AAA next year (unless he dominated and pushed the issue).

Mentioning Alonso's defense in the OF is misguided.
He shouldn’t be playing in the OF. The simple fact that he is a 1B-only prospect obviously hurts his value a bit, as it does all 1B-only prospects, but that is already factored into his prospect status. Many people (seemingly you included) are double counting the fact that he can’t play OF against him. If he hit like he does and played all-star SS, he’d be the #1 prospect in baseball. The fact that he’d be terrible at SS is implied in his 1B-only prospect status. You don’t say, he’s average at 1B, sucks at SS though, as part of an argument against him, even if the Reds attempted to play him at SS. The same is true of playing him in the OF.
by auclairkeithbc on Nov 25, 2025 7:18 PM EST up reply actions
Fine, ignore that fact
The point still stands that for a 1b-only prospect, he is old and has yet to show anything near elite power.

What??
I didn’t dispute that. I just said the fact that he is particularly bad at playing SS or C or OF is not all that relevant. It is the expectation for a 1B-only prospect.

I am assuming by the double ? my post was taken harsher than intended
I was conceding the LF argument, as you made a good point against using it. But I still believe he will not contribute as much as Turner going forward.

Oh I misinterpreted your header.
By “Fine, ignore that fact” you just meant forget the part about him playing particularly bad OF, and that your main point was what followed in the body of your post. Perfectly reasonable. I read “Fine, ignore that fact” as something like “Go ahead and ignore the facts if you want, but…”
Reading it again, it is pretty obvious what you meant, and after your clarification, totally obvious what you meant. :)

I would be voting Lindor here ...
… but I am going with Alonso of these choices.

Yeah, I think that Alonso is way early here, and that fact may cause more deserving prospects (IMHO) like Lindor, Bogaerts, Starling and others to be lower than they should be. Not the only case like this either. That’s the drawback of doing the poll this way, altho there will be pros and cons of whichever way we do it.

Reply fail...
Meant to be a reply to traindogger’s post.
by rhd on Nov 25, 2025 10:57 PM EST up reply actions
The problem is this...
Lindor would always be behind Alonso, no matter how we do it. The community likes Alonso quite a bit more than Lindor.
by auclairkeithbc on Nov 25, 2025 10:58 PM EST up reply actions
The real problem
is Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem. There’s no perfect way for a community of voters to rank more than 2 distinct choices, despite auclairkeithbc’s very able efforts.
Technically, it doesn’t apply to this list with theoretically only two distinct choices, but there are indirectly more choices that may affect the decision (Prefer Pitcher 2 to Pitcher 1, and Position Player 1 to Pitcher 1, but want Pitcher 2 as high as possible so vote Pitcher 1 to get past him).
