"If you hit .440 with 20 bombs, you don't have to do s---. You don't have to bring a glove to practice, just hit and leave whenever you want. You can bring a 40 and smoke a cigarette and call me from the parking lot asking me what time the game is, and I'll tell you. You can even say 'F--- you, Steve!' Actually, don't say that, that wouldn't be very nice." -Steve Friend, Head Coach, Chabot College Gladiators Baseball

A blowout so far
Can’t see Lindor this high, or above Paxton.

i'm definitely glad
we are doing this list before the major lists come out. it might just be that pitching is just way deeper than hitting, but it is interesting anyway how split the opinions have been with the hitters around this spot (starting with Alonso the spot before), with some people being really down on the poll winners (from Alonso at #12 to Jackson at #20, people seem really split - any of them could be 10 spots back for some voters). But the pitchers, while there have been close votes, seem to be ordered in a more generally agreeable way, and I don’t think we’ve seen any pitcher “hold up this list” as I think might be happening now with the hitters. i have guys like lindor and taveras pretty far back compared to where they got on the hitter list, but i don’t have any HUGE differences with the pitcher list.

we are maybe at the point
where people are going to have to decide whether to accept the consensus community opinion of how positional players are ranked, and just suck it up and vote for the hitter they don’t really like, assuming they do like the next few hitters a lot more than the upcoming pitchers. i’m not saying people should or shouldn’t do that. but when we all decide as a community that lindor is better than starling, bogaerts, rizzo, etc, we probably aren’t doing ourselves any favors by trying to subvert that consensus decision in the overall polls. we’ll see what happens, but it is at least an interesting dynamic that is inevitable using this system.

Not that I disagree with your general point
About where players end up on the list. But I think that’s definitely the wrong way to look at it. I’ve been voting based on who of these two prospects I like better. It has absolutely nothing to do with where they end up on the list. For instance, I voted for Lindor above, but I might vote for the next 3 pitchers on the list over Lindor if that opportunity is presented.
Worrying about the final ranking is pretty silly, considering how many people it takes to decide who we’re voting on at certain spots anyway.

I am not recommending doing it either way
It is fine to approach each vote independently, but that can in some cases lead to people re-hashing a settled debate. This process isn’t a pure one (maybe not process could be), and it is not clear at all which approach is the “purest” either; accepting the 1st stage decisions the community makes then working on 2nd stage decisions, or never accepting the 1st stage decisions, and approaching each poll anew. I am not criticizing either approach. But the POINT, in my opinion is definitely without question to come up with the best most accurate overall list, NOT to make sure we get any individual spot exactly correct. Getting #28 correct isn’t a good thing if it means getting #30-#38 horribly wrong. Either way, neither approach is going to have a substantial impact on the results. It is just one of those things where there is no perfect approach in my opinion anyway.

I can see it
and I really like Paxton. I think Lindor is a special talent. I wonder If position should be a factor here? Lindor is riskier, I suppose and, farther away but I if I had to grab one or the other for a team, I think a Lindor is the rarer player potentially.

Yes
I actually like Paxton quite a bit but have gone contrary to him in a couple of polls. This is one of those instances & it’s Francisco Lindor’s combination of talent, SS defense & extra base power potential that could make him a truly unique guy & that’s why I went with him here. I’m really psyched to see how he fares in ’12.

There is the problem with ranking Lindor above Paxton, to me at least. It is like someone offering $10 or 10 lottery tickets, I guess it depends on your risk aversion. Lindor could very well be awesome next year, but Paxton was awesome this year at a minor league level Lindor will not reach until 2014 if everything works out great.
by cookiedabookie on Nov 28, 2025 12:33 PM EST up reply actions
No doubt
It is tricky to factor all of that in & in most cases, I would side with the player in James Paxton’s shoes here (I would opt for he over Bubba Starling for example). Lindor is one of my faves from the last Draft though & it isn’t a knock on Paxton in the slightest. There seems to be some buzz on Lindor right now too & while it’s far from as tangible as a stat line might be, it is tough to completely discount. I likely would have gone Lindor over Dan Hultzen (still think the Mariners should have too), Taijuan Walker, & Jarrod Parker in this exercise as well. I think I would’ve gone Dylan Bundy slightly SU, but it probably would have been close.
Paxton is closer, yes, but I agree with the contention above that Lindor is the ‘rarer player potentially’ & I’m taking a leap of faith in this particular poll. Boy, there’s a lot to like about Paxton though - am still trying to figure out how Parker ranked higher..
