Community Discussion: How Would You Replace Joakim Soria?
As you have probably heard, Kansas City Royals closer Joakim Soria has an injured elbow and could miss the 2012 season if Tommy John surgery is necessary.
Let's say you are Royals GM Dayton Moore. A djinn makes the following offer: you can choose any minor league pitcher from any other organization to replace Soria as your closer. You can't pick someone who is already a Royal, but otherwise you can pull any pitcher out of any other system. They are guaranteed to stay healthy.
The caveats: it cannot be anyone who has already pitched in the majors, and you have to use them in the closer role for all of 2012 even if they pitch poorly.
Who do you pick and why? (Addendum: You can't pick Yu Darvish)

Darn caveats
Matt Moore would have made a sweet closer. :-)
Probably Trevor Bauer or Addison Reed. Leaning Bauer. Because he’s generally awesome and could be toxic as a FB/CB closer if the starting thing doesn’t work out (though I imagine it will). Reed if I have to pick someone who’ll actually likely close.

It'd be interesting to see how Bauer warms up out of the 'pen

agreed
Bauer has a long and extensive warm up routine, it’s hard to imagine him in the pen.

Heath Hembree for me
Would be Addison Reed, but he had an americano or two late for the White Sox. I think Trevor Bauer is an intriguing choice, but I’ll go with the straight power arm.

Agree
While Hembree could begin the season a bit shaky (he could use a few more months of seasoning) he should be able to finish the 2012 campaign with a strong showing.

Personally I'd stay in house
because closers (or closer type arms) are overvalued and expensive. Since that’s not the point of the thread though, I’ll play along. Bryan Morris would be interesting. The only piece remaining from the Jason Bay trade, Morris is a former 1st rounder and has essentially been a starter his entire career. After struggling at the start of last year, he was moved to the bullpen and put up a 2.05 ERA in 52.2 innings with 8 K/9. He gave up only 2 HRs all season and was lights out down the stretch. Right around the trade deadline one scout (I can’t find the link) said Morris would be the best option in the organization if the team needed immediate bullpen help.

Shelby Miller
I would pull an Adam Wainright with another Cardinal and take Miller. I can see him absolutely dominating out of the pen in 2012 and then I would move him into the rotation for 2013. It would get him some major league exposure and limit his innings at the same time.
My next pick would probably be Wily Peralta.

He might walk 3 before closing it out, but as a power lefty in the Aroldis/Moore mold, he is dictating the action. If he’s on, doesn’t matter who’s up.

Yeah … it’s rushing him a whole lot. But with that easy heat, he only really needs a serviceable 2nd offering.

Sub-Thread Discussion
Love the thread, but I’d also love peoples’ perspectives on what the Royals should ACTUALLY do? Do they go with Broxton and hope he holds up? Let Holland try his hand in the role? He looked great last year. Curious what John thinks about his substantial drop in WHIP vs his ML numbers…love the strikeout rate….he could surprise if he gets the chance. Any other in-house candidates?

as a royals fan, i'd prefer that they use broxton or crow...
and have holland for the higher leverage situations

Gerrit Cole
I’d take Bauer’s former teammate, Gerrit Cole. He lacks consistency, but that wouldn’t matter as much as a closer.
by footballstu on Mar 20, 2026 12:18 PM EDT reply actions
Sonny Gray
could step in with his two pitch mix. His command would need patience but he could be good.
If you would get to keep this player, Dylan Bundy could be worth the chance. Tell him to keep it simple and it could pay the best long term benefits. It could be very risky as well but I’d take him over Hembree or Martinez if I could keep them long term.

Not who I'd pick but
an interesting idea…
Stetson Allie. Nasty fastball/slider combo and you could just scare the crap out of everyone.
Hit 9 of the batters he faced in 26 innings last year. I really do feel sorry for whoever was in the New York-Penn League last year.
More realistically, I’ll agree with Carlos Martinez

Phillippe Aumont
big kid (6’7"), good arm w/ closer potential and stuff.
One big thing — he COULD be ready right now.
by insane_sanity on Mar 20, 2026 1:19 PM EDT reply actions
I gave consideration to Aumont as well ...
But went with martinez given statements out of ST that Aumont is having difficulty with his delivery:
Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee had a critical assessment of Aumont’s outing Saturday, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Spin: Aumont allowed two hits, walked two, threw a wild pitch and three Blue Jays stole three bases against him. “He’s erratic,” Dubee said. “Slow delivery to the plate. He’s inconsistent. He has a great arm. He has great stuff. But we have a little work to do there.” Aumont is competing for a bullpen job this spring.

closer prospect
It’s easy to pick some elite SP prospects who haven’t made it to the majors yet, like Bauer, Cole, Bundy, Miller, Martinez, etc.
If you’re guaranteeing he’ll be healthy and want no big league experience, I’d consider Matt West. He’s only pitched in low A, but he has good control of elite closer stuff.

I also was thinking Matt West of the Rangers. Everyone else is taking the easy path and choosing guys that are almost sure to be starters. Have some guts and actually pick someone that looks like they are going to close.

West
I’m not familiar with West.
I went the same route as you folks, and as such threw Aumont’s name out there. He was in AA/AAA last season and as such could be an immediate option, which the Royals need.
by insane_sanity on Mar 20, 2026 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Why would you pick a minor leaguer
that has already flamed out as a starter? You don’t end up as a minor league reliever without at least one horrible flaw….or you are the big-time college reliever type.
by huztler on Mar 20, 2026 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions
West has never been tried as a SP. He converted from 3B and is basically a 2 pitch pitcher, but those 2 pitches are absolutely filthy. No point in trying to stretch him out when he got a late start as a pitcher and profiles best in the pen anyway.
by rlwhite on Mar 21, 2026 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions
I don't get this
Sickels never said he had to be a minor league reliever. Many pitching prospects begin their careers as closers then transition successfully into a starters’ role. Don’t confuse lack of guts with making the wisest baseball decision.

Just trying to get people to dig beyond the obvious. Helps us all learn something. RP prospects tend to be more obscure.
If you want to make a list of non-elite SP prospects who would profile as shutdown closers if they were moved to the pen, that’s another approach that’d be very educational. Naming a bunch of elite SP prospects isn’t really helping anybody.
by rlwhite on Mar 21, 2026 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions
digging beyond the obvious should be looking at those SP prospects and evaluating
which of them actually suit the role. For example someone with bad fastball command or inconsistent secondaries isn’t much of a match. SP with fastball command and one go to pitch is what we are looking for.
by pedrophile on Mar 21, 2026 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions
West is currently nursing a elbow strain
I saw the note in the text above re: health, but I can’t help but think that his inexperience as a pitcher (as in, his body isn’t used to it) makes me think he would not be a great candidate to close for this year.
by dbreer23 on Mar 20, 2026 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Syndergaard would be a nice option
As I mentioned above Cole would be my choice, but I could see Noah doing well. He is already wowing the scouts in the Jays minor league camp.
by pedrophile on Mar 20, 2026 1:41 PM EDT reply actions
btw - I like Syndergaard because he has a big fastball with good command and decent
secondaries. The fastball and the command of it is the most important for me in a closer.

I trust him to keep composed after watching his clutch CWS performance. Doesn’t have classic closer stuff, but I’d feel good handing him the ball all year if I had to.

Steven Geltz...?
Just for variety’s sake; don’t much much about the ‘lil righty, other than his unholy strikeout rates for the last two years (13 per 9 last year, 15 per 9 in 2010, with acceptable free pass ratios), and he’s already accustomed to bullpen usage patterns.
I know you said “guaranteed good health,” John…but a trained reliever might be a bit more effective in his familiar role.

Notice how many...
6’0ish hard throwing prospect starters have been listed. But someone like Nestor Molina, Carlos Martinez, or Keyvius Sampson are options of the same note. I’m also a believer that most starters with a great fastball can excel as a closer (ex Jordan Walden). See you in the 9th inning Arodys Vizcaino.
I voted for Hembree as he the best relief prospect but JR Graham might be a good one too.
