Hak Ju Lee is a LOT better baseball prospect than Robbie Erlin

No offense here because, many of these votes are splitting hairs or how one sees the future of two of these kids but, Lee is just a lot better ballplayer here.

If people understood how good you have to be to hit .330/.399/.420 with walks, speed, little pop, defense in the Northwest League at age 18, then follow that with .282/.354/.351 with 32 swipes and defense in the MWL at age 19, then follow that with a freaking stellar .318/.389/.443, season in the Florida State League at the age of 20. These are three, tough leagues to hit and he was very young for all of them and, performed well.

Even his stint in AA was good if people would finally use the stupid babip stat when it is really usefull :) Lee hit .190 in 24 games but, he was actually pretty good. He hit 4 triples, walked 11 times, stole 5 bases, scored 16 runs, made 2 errors. He was fine there.

This is a really good hitting prospect, who also plays an outstanding defensive shortstop, who can also run like the wind. I’m not exactly sure how we justify having him way down at 41 or, voting for Robbie Erlin over him. It doesn’’t bother too much me but, it does make me laugh a little.

Erlin was dealt - with another pitcher - for Mike Adams. He is a fine, strike-throwing lefty and, maybe I am selling him short in that ballpark (Petco) but, he is mile or so behind a kid like Lee to me.

Eh

You can’t use that trade as an argument against him. Lots of weird trades and terrible trades happen in baseball - especially in playoff races.

by auclairkeithbc on Dec 14, 2025 1:55 PM EST up reply actions

Sure, I agree with that

but, he was traded with another pitcher for a set-up reliever. That really isn’t the majority of my poiunt anyways. lee is pretty clearly an excellent, all-around, shortstop prospect and Erlin throws a lot of strikes but, gives up some longballs. I don’t see them as close really and, I have a hard time seeing an argument for it on this one.

It’s paertially my fault actully. I should have been voting for Lee more when I was voting for Lindor, in retrospect.

I am not a big Lee fan at all

I don’t think he’s a good hitting prospect.

by auclairkeithbc on Dec 14, 2025 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

No use convincing you I suppose but, I'll try anyways

. . but, what exactly is there to complain about a .300 average over three seasons - in three tough l;eagues - that he was young for - all while playing a very important defensive position -and playing it well? Not sure what there is not to like here.

The two complaints I’ve heard most commmonly about him are 1. “He gets too many hits when he makes contact”, which is a good quality in a player so, that makes no sense to me. 2. “He doesn’t have enough power”, well, he is a shortstop and, he has decent enough pop for that position and, he just turned 21 years old.

by casejud on Dec 14, 2025 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

Err

For me, if Lee keeps developing and in a 2 years from now he just completed a full season at AA and AAA with decent hitting numbers for a SS, he’ll be around the 40th best positional prospect, maybe a touch higher. But that is also pretty much his ceiling progression. We are treating him as if he’s already ML ready.

by auclairkeithbc on Dec 14, 2025 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

SHOOT

40th best OVERALL prospect I mean.

by auclairkeithbc on Dec 14, 2025 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

Ok, fair enough

I’ll say this though . . . most of the players in the top 40 aren’t any closer to the big leagues than Lee and, we are projecting futures anyways. We could be wrong projecting a kid who’s a couple of years away to be a very good major leaguer but, that doesn’t change te fact that even guys who are right on the doorstep of the big leagues, Mesoraco, Alonso, etc, have an adjustment to make as well.

I also think that when a player of lee’s skills moves from A to A+ and improves a lot, he has already passed a major hurdle to the big leagues. I think he’ll be in the big leagues before the en of those two years you speak of.

Agree with just about everything

I’d be surprised if Hak-Ju doesn’t win with a higher percentage than Jake Marisnick did actually.

by Matt0330 on Dec 14, 2025 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

Agree 100%

I have Lee in my top 30 overall. He put up wRC+ of 131, 106, and 130 with OPS+ of 125, 96, 131, and wOBA+ of 112, 100, and 114 over the last three years as an excellent defensive SS with good ARL. He, to me, is an elite prospect. I love Erlin, and had him higher than most last year, but his upside ML value is nowhere near Lee’s.

by cookiedabookie on Dec 14, 2025 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

A potentially standout SS

Yeah though, I’m surprised it’s even this close.

by Matt0330 on Dec 14, 2025 11:59 PM EST up reply actions

i agree

but calling Erlin a

low-ceiling pitcher

seems a bit wrong, especially in the ballpark he’ll be pitching in. it’s not like he’s Matt Moore, but he will definitely be a #3, at worst, in PETCO. that’s not “low-ceiling” to me. that’s more, “mid-ceiling”.

Again, though, I’d take Lee over Erlin.

Lee getting 35 of 50 votes . . . 70 percent eh?

I’m a math genius, obviously.
