Community Positional Prospect Discussion (#16-20)

This thread is for on-going discussions about the next few positional players you think should be elected to the Community Positional Prospect list.

In the current positional poll, Xander Bogaerts, Oscar Taveras, and Anthony Rizzo are leading the polls, and have been discussed a fair amount already.  If you are interested in that discussion, check out this link or the current positional prospect threads.

Some guys that have been getting votes beyond those three, that might be interesting to discuss, are Brett Jackson, George Springer, Cheslor Cuthbert, Michael Choice, Christian Yelich, Jake Marisnick, Yasmani Grandal, Nick Castellanos, Nick Franklin, Mike Olt and Hak-Ju Lee.  Feel free to discuss your favorites among this group, or anyone else you think should be at the top of this group, even if they haven't been getting official votes yet.

Some others

I know that Marcell Ozuna, Jonathan Singleton & Brandon Jacobs are in my Top 10 remaining position player prospects but I’m pretty sure I’m higher on all 3 of those cats than most are (even the formerly lauded Singleton). For example, I like Ozuna more than Christian Yelich (albeit slightly) & Singleton considerably better than George Springer.

As for the names above, I’m pretty surprised that Oscar Taveras is still on the list (although I may be a little more conservative than most with prospects like Bubba Starling, etc) & would have to think he’s off soon. I’d say the same with Hak Ju Lee & am a little perplexed with the lack of love he is seeing considering the infatuation many seem to have with positional value. Was it a relatively (but not unexpected) quiet 3 1/2 weeks offensively by a 20 year old in AA?

Nick Franklin would probably be the top guy for me after Taveras & with Lee, but Xander Bogaerts, Yelich, Cheslor Cuthbert & Yasmani Grandal are right there too (along with the names I mentioned before).

Good group

We’ll likely be voting in tandem in at least a few upcoming votes.

I like your next five a lot

Regarding Lee, I’d say that the communitys obsession with normalizing singles and, iso, is trumping the obsession with position value maybe?

Nearly everybody who hits a lot of singles here gets underrated in my opinion. I love power as much as anybody but Hak Ju Lee projects as an outstanding defender, with a decent eye, outstanding speed, who hits a lot of triples, not so many doubles and homers and, a LOT of singles! ! If you take that away from him when evaluating him, he doesn’t look as good and, unfairly so.

I swear that more than 90 percent of BABIP use here is totall nonsense. Just my opinion, of course. Like the idea that Oscar T just happens to hit a lot of baseballs past infielders and . . . in the gaps . . . over the fence, etc.

Lee is third in line for me right now

Had him at 14 overall on my positional list.

Interesting thoughts

I’m a fan of many power guys too & tend to cut the bats that I believe in a modicum of slack defensively to say the least, but the lack of love for Lee is still surprising when considering he does so many of the things that a subset of the crowd here seem to be smit with. I mean - isn’t his defensive upside practically at an elite level? He also slashed .318/.389/.443 in the FSL at 20 with speed to burn & will be 21 in the Southern League to begin 2011 in all likelihood.

Come to think of it - I’m surprised that he & Taveras haven’t been voted in the poll yet!

Gyorko

hasn’t been mentioned yet as far as I can tell. Any thoughts on when he enters the discussion?

I know there are the inflated A+ numbers & decreased numbers at AA but still had nice overall season and has pretty good contact rate for a power guy.
Turned 23 in September.

He's in the tester pool

I have him currently penciled in as 5th to get on the official voting poll, but that can change depending how people feel about him. It seems like Jon Singleton, Gary Brown, Starling Marte, and Mike Mahtook have been getting a little more support to be added so far.

Ranking said 5

For what it’s worth if they’re probably the next 5 on tap:

Singleton
Mahtook
Brown
Gyorko
Marte

by Matt0330 on Nov 21, 2025 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

This is the total list of testers as of now
Jonathan Singleton, Gary Brown, Starling Marte, Mike Mahtook, Jedd Gyorko, Jean Segura, Will Middlebrooks, Oswaldo Arcia, Garin Cecchini, Tim Wheeler, Kolten Wong, Billy Hamilton, Jonathan Schoop, Wilin Rosario

It isn’t like the next 5 are set in stone. I’ll readjust things based on who the community seems to want added. And if there is a prospect not mentioned that anyone has higher than most of the people on this list, please let me know.

Cuthbert Yelich and Jackson

Have already been in the rotation for a while, having been on several polls. Mahtook is just 5th in line (currently) in the tester pool, meaning he’s likely going to be around the 35th overall hitter if it works out the way they get placed on the poll.

by auclairkeithbc on Nov 21, 2025 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

Not if I can help it!

I’m kidding but, SHS, maybe you should look at him again. Mahtook reminds me of Carlos Quentin but, with far better defensive skills.

Natural power, strength, batting eye and plays the game hard and, with passion.

Yelich vs. Marisnick

I don’t have Marisnick quite on my next 5 just yet, but I don’t see how Yelich is the better prospect just now. Very similar batting lines this year, and but Marisnick adds positional value, better defence and overall speed.

by gabrielsyme on Nov 22, 2025 2:02 AM EST up reply actions

My next 5...

besides Bogaerts and Rizzo: Gose, Marisnick, Olt, Choice, G Brown. But I’m voting Rizzo until he’s on.

by rhd on Nov 21, 2025 6:08 PM EST reply actions

After that...

next 5 probably would be Hamilton, B Jackson, Yelich, H Lee, Gyorko.

Bogaerts
Marisnick
Grandal
