Support Small Business: Buy the 2012 Baseball Prospect Book!

2012book_medium

I am hard at work on the Baltimore Orioles prospect list and should have it done tomorrow or early Sunday.

In the meantime, why not support small business this Black Friday and order the 2012 Baseball Prospect Book? It will have reports on at least 1,150 players. We are selling both paper copies and a .pdf version from the beginning this year, but we need as many advance sales as possible so we know how many paper copies to order. You can order via paypal or send me a check, and can find the details at the link.

E Version Question

can the e version translate or be translated to Kindle?

by ribman on Nov 25, 2025 6:36 PM EST reply actions   2 recs

Would also like this

I’ve ordered anyway, but I’d also like Kindle-compatibility. If it isn’t possible this year, maybe it could be looked at for the future.

kindle

We are looking into it.

I'd like to just buy it in Kindle format.

However, the newer Kindles do read PDFs. I haven’t tried it yet, but Amazon claims that it will read a PDF.

But it’s so much easier to just buy it in Kindle format.

kindle

For writers, there are problems involving turning your intellectual property over to a company like Amazon. I am not happy with what I understand about the legal terms, and there are issues with pricing and royalties as well.

If it's PDF, it should already be translatable to at least a Nook

Some of the lines might not look pretty, but it’ll be readable

just ordered my book

can’t wait for Jan. 28th to get here! good luck with pulling the book together.

placed my order a few minutes ago

Arrival of the book is always a highlight of the year… this time no Canadian customs delays to interfere (those border guys are going to miss reading my book before I do LOL).

It would be nice to see a “buy both” combo with some sort of discount for buying both. I would love the PDF version AND the paper version, but not sure I can justify ~$70 (I’m in Canada) for it. Just a thought.

I too am in Canada

And have bought the pdf version.

For those that haven’t bought it - John’s book is really very, very good - at least it was last year.

+1 also in Canada

Provided the Canadian dollar stays strong against the greenback, it makes it easier for paperback, but the E-Book idea is an excellent one.

Canada, eh?

Wow, lots of Canuck buyers here… I’m in BC, on Vancouver Island, and have been buying Sickels books since 1996 when John took over publication of the Stats Inc Minor League Scouting Notebook from Eddie Epstein. My cupboard overfloweth.

Vancouver Island...

I’m in Nanaimo. Small world, eh?

Another Canuck

Just placed my order! Your book always warms the winter here in Ontario, John. Good luck with the pdf sales - I need to have an actual book, can’t see that ever changing…

e-book

I was always worried that releasing an electronic version would cause piracy problems and reduce hard-copy sales to the point that I was no longer viable to produce hard copies. And that is exactly what happened in 2011: when we started selling pdfs, after an initial burst sales completely tanked, leaving us with unsold hard copy books for the first time since 2003.

So I am quite suspicious of even selling the .pdf, let alone a Kindle version. However, we will do at least the .pdf this year from the start and see what happens.

by John Sickels on Nov 26, 2025 3:17 PM EST reply actions

Hoping it will work out

John, I will be one of those to have only an electronic version this year after buying the book in hard copy for the past umpteen years. I will also "see what happens regarding my use of the pdf format. There is something about having the book in your hands that I will miss, but if I find the electronic version as useful as the paper version, I’ll stick with it… no cross-border issues, and no delay in receiving it.
You can rest assured, however, that I will not allow my copy to be pirated and have that eat into your livelihood. The Sickels pearls of wisdom are like gold and need to be guarded as such, so that they keep on flowing in future years.

Thanks for giving the e-book a trial run from the start

I was one of those who lobbied for and purchased the pdf last year and I am sorry to hear you had unsold hard copies. Were your total sales up or down?

I’m not an expert on Kindle, though both my wife and I own one, but I would think that a Kindle version would guard against piracy — someone would have lend their Kindle to someone else, which would seem to me to be less of a possibility then lending the actual book, since one’s Kindle hold many books, not just one. You’d have far more control with a Kindle version than a pdf. I would expect there would be an extra cost too to publish on Kindle, but if piracy is a concern, it may be worthwhile.

I bought the pdf last year after buying the book before, and as an American in Canada, it was great to avoid the shipping costs. I also prefer the pdf as a I prep for my auction and create lists of players to target in the auction, players to target in our reserve draft and players to track over the course of the season.

Thanks again for making the book available in pdf so early — I’ll be ordering my copy this week!

Well there are “issues” about using Kindle that we are still trying to judge.

by John Sickels on Nov 27, 2025 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

e-book

Just wanted to add that I probably wouldn’t buy if you didn’t have the e-book on offer at the same time as the hard copy - the extra cost and time delay in getting the book to Europe is a significant issue for me, so the e-book has probably got you at least one sale you wouldn’t have if you were only doing paper-based.

by A Behemoth on Nov 26, 2025 7:56 PM EST reply actions

True

I live in Germany, have not bought the book yet but don´t want anything to do with PayPal and would rather avoid sending cheques (which we don´t really have over here anymore and which I´d probably have to order from my bank 1st).

I will however buy the e-book or a hard-copy if I can pay via credit card. Heck, I might send cash in the mail, hoping it gets through….

by Doob on Nov 27, 2025 1:57 AM EST up reply actions

What’s wrong with paypal? Just curious. I’ve never had any issues using them.
