Tyler Chatwood traded to the Rockies
for Chris Iannetta.
Rockies promptly signed Ramon Hernandez to a 2 year deal to fill the void.
I like this move for both teams (Angels regretting trading away Napoli, the day has come!), and for fantasy puposes, Chatwood takes a nice jump up in my prospect ranks. From perusing the discussion / commentary of the "Rating last year's rookies" activity, he was probably going to be an odd man out due to a deep class.
This is probably the best time to revist his prospect status and what people think his future might hold.

Cheers!

as an Angels fan I'm torn
I love that this spells the end of Jeff “below Mendoza” Mathis but I’ll always wonder what Chatwood could have become. His peripherals are atrocious but he was only 21 and club controlled.

His peripherals were atrocious
But he also allowed a very low slugging percentage. If only people on this site believed in that, as an ability. I ranked him in my top 50 last April and, was pretty pleased with his performance overall, considering he was rushed to the show pretty hastily last year. He held his own pretty well.

The AL slugged .408 last year as a group.
Chatwood allowed a .442 Slugging Percentage.
Forgive me if I don’t write “allows a very low slugging percentage” in pen on the list of Chatwood’s strengths.

To be fair his ISO allowed was slightly below (better than) average
But yeah, it certainly wasn’t a talent that was on display last year.

Shit
I should have checked that before I said that. My bad. It is a talent he has shown in the minors and until he got teed off on the last two months in the big leagues - .607 in September, ouch.
I still belive in him a lot. The numbers don’t look good but, considering he wasn’t really ready for the nig leagues, he did well.

Jeez
He wouldn’t have been ready for the negro leagues either, nmo doubt. If they would have let him in :) No offense to anybody.

He has never shown that he could be any more than a 5th starter

Ruht - Row (as Astro from the Jetson's would say)
What does this do for the immediate future of both Hank Conger & Wilin Rosario?
I guess it could be asked differently . . . . . what does this say about each organization’s confidence level of both Conger & Rosario?
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

more about Conger than Rosario
LAA has never really cared much for Conger though . . .a little odd as he’s done well for himself for the most part and he’s very young for a catcher who has reached the level that he has, but he’s not a big glove guy which dooms him in Anaheim.
Rosario, on the other hand, needs a full year of Triple A at the least, so the Hernandez deal makes sense. If Rosario is ready next year, it won’t be hard to either dispose of Hernandez or find a rotation that works for 2013.
by mrkupe on Nov 30, 2025 10:22 PM EST up reply actions
Rosario is going to split time with Hernandez the next two years
Hernandez gets 90-100 while Rosario gets 60-70 this year and it is switched for next year. The Rockies probably believe Rosario won’t anything with Colorado Springs, and Rosario would’ve been starting mid 2011 season if it weren’t for the injury in 2010.
This is less about Iannetta and more about Rosario than people think. The Rockies were just getting value for Iannetta while they could.

I actually like him a lot
He’s got a terrific arm. I don’t think he’s really destined to be a starter (effort in his delivery, doesn’t trust his secondaries), but I think he has the potential for a bright future nonetheless. I’d love to stick him in a major league pen to reap the benefits of his heavy mid-90s fastball.

to me it shows a lack of confidence in the Angels pitching coaches and front line developers of top young arms.
Chatwood will only be 22, and has 2+ years to settle in just right and figure things out, to me, the Angels are scared of failure and screems taking what they can get for a player they think is basically a AAAA pitcher with little command and little upside left, or they see Chatwood as a bust, already. Which would be ridiculous.

Or
You just have to give up something of value to get a servicable, major league Catcher?

How on earth
does this move jump Chatwood up in your fantasy expectations? Free passes in Colorado are even more deadly than elsewhere, and if there’s one thing you can bank on with Tyler, it’s that he’ll continue to walk WAYYYYYYY too many hitters.

you're being too harsh, he's still recovering from Tommy John surgery
It takes somewhere between 18 months and 8 years for the control to come all the way back, you know.

Rockies are just stockpiling on arms
This was the latest they could deal Iannetta for value anyways, his 2013 option is voidable if he is traded. This is a vote of confidence in Rosario for the future and the Rockies probably saw Hernandez fitting the club for 2012-2013 better than Iannetta.

DAMMIT!
I was hoping the Cubs would steal this kid since I figured he was on the trade block. Love his stuff…and I think he can start long term.
