Extremely Early 2012 Mock Draft
I originally posted this at MLBBONUSBABY but I thought I might as well post it here as well. I was looking forward to doing one, then all this CBA stuff threw me way off. I just decided to go straight down the order, no FA comp, no nothing included for now.
Sorry about the lack of commentary, I planned on doing more, then school work became a lot in a short period of time. If I find time, I may add some commentary.
1. Houston Astros - Marc Appel - RHP - I think Appel comes out this year and does very well and the Astros end up picking him up as a high end guy who will move fast and get the job done.
2. Minnesota Twins - Mike Zunino - C - Zunino proved this year that his bat has come a long ways, and did it with the new bats that many struggled with. First time I saw him he stood out to me, and I think Minnesota uses this pick to pick up a quick moving catcher who is good on D and can hit. Gives them another year or two of Mauer behind the plate and then they can afford to move him off the position.
3. Seattle Mariners - Byron Buxton - OF - Buxton burst onto the scene this summer with some great performances at some showcases. I like him a lot, by draft time maybe more than Starling. He has absolutely tremendous speed, easy range for CF, and his speed along with his arm are already ML plus tools. Power could also develop into a plus tool as he has the frame that naturally puts on muscle well.
4. Baltimore Orioles - Luc Giolito - RHP - Went back and forth on whether the Orioles would use their high 1st rounder on a high school pitcher in back to back years. In the end I went with Giolito over Gausman.
5. Kansas City Royals - Kevin Gausman - RHP - I don't know if this could work out better for KC as they get a top notch college pitcher right out of the gate. Could move fast and work well with what they are putting together down there.
6. Chicago Cubs - Hunter Virant - LHP - Maybe a little bit of a risky reach here, but as a high school lefty to be sitting in the low 90's he isn't quite the norm. This could be an interesting convo between the new front office, and I almost put Marrero here, but even though you almost never draft based ML needs or non-needs, I just can't bring myself to put Marrero here.
7. San Diego Padres - Deven Marrero - SS - I don't have a problem putting Marrero here though. The biggest question for Marrero is his power, but really that is the only big question. You know what he brings to the table for the most part, and it's basically all good.
8. Pittsburgh Pirates - Carlos Correa - SS - With a simple yet hard swing, Correa has good offensive potential coming out of Puerto Rico. He may eventually move to 3B but for now he is fine at SS
9. Florida Marlins - Chris Beck - RHP - If they make even 2 of these moves they act like they are trying to pull off this Winter, good quick rising college pitching may be something they can't pass up with that group they may have
10. Colorado Rockies - David Dahl - OF - A very solid high school hitter, Dahl has great swing mechanics and top notch athleticism with a good chance to develop good power and good base running instincts
11. Oakland Athletics - Victor Roache - OF
12. New York Mets - Lance McCullers - RHP
13. Chicago White Sox - Gavin Cechinni - SS
14. Cincinnati Reds - Kyle Zimmer - RHP
15. Cleveland Indians - Trey Williams - 3B
16. Washington Nationals - Max Fried - LHP
17. Toronto Blue Jays - Jesmuel Valentine - SS
18. Los Angeles Dodgers - Freddy Avis - RHP
19. Angels - Alex Bregman - C/INF
20. San Francisco Giants - Kenny Diekroger - SS
21. Atlanta Braves - Matt Smoral - LHP
22. Toronto Blue Jays - Brandon Thomas - OF
23. St. Louis Cardinals - Taylor Cherry - RHP
24. Boston Red Sox - Walker Weikel - RHP
25. Tampa Bay Rays - Travis Jankowski - OF
26. Arizona Diamondbacks - Stryker Trahan - C
27. Detroit Tigers - Brandon Thompson - OF
28. Milwaukee Brewers - Tom Murphy - C
29. Texas Rangers - Lucas Sims - RHP
30. New York Yankees - Michael Wacha - RHP
31. Philadelphia Phillies - Josh Elander - C

Zunino is my favorite college position player in next year's class
Big fan of what I saw last spring.

Appel huh
I can see it… not sure I fully buy into him, he wasn’t as dominant as I’d like to have seen last year, but a lot will depend upon how he performs this upcoming season.

He's similar to Cole
He flashes three plus or better pitches, but they’re not consistent - his fastball in particular would lose velocity by the middle innings - and his command can be an issue. I’m waiting to see how much improvement he’s made this year before endorsing him as the top college pitcher (I slightly prefer Gausman right now).

Wow, it is fun to see the names this early, i mean hey the draft is "only" 7+ months away...haha lol
I bet only 15-21 of these names are even going to be 1st round picks.
A LOT LOT will change Appell could slide down to the top 5, Buxton is a big wildcard, MCCullers could really go higher IMO, Gausman could fall of the table completely , you just don’t know yet.
I like what you’ve done here though, I would agree with 90% of it as of today, great work.

I love Buxton, and could see the Twins taking him at 2. But it is early.

ehhhh
I think the Twins will stick with college guys that they shouldn’t have trouble signing.

the really interesting thing about this draft, to me
It’s the first time in quite a while that we haven’t had even a single consensus player at the top, let alone a group of players who have clearly laid claim to an early draft slot. Of course, by draft time the talent usually shows up . . .so my guess is that we’re going to be in for a year filled with lots of upward and downward movement on draft boards, along with a slew of breakout performances out of players who aren’t getting a lot of talk just yet. It’s not hard to imagine that we might see several players follow a Mike Moustakas or Clayton Kershaw trajectory in terms of draft standing.

Could not agree more. While Appel “looks” like the somewhat consensus #1 pick, he’s not seen as a Strasburg, Harper, or Price. While this mock may look appropriate currently, a TON can and will likely change between now and then.
I was personally surprised to see Marrero at 7. I can easily see him going at 2 or even 1. He’s a better draft prospect than Christian Colon was, and the 2012 class does not look quite as strong as 2010 was. Again - that goes back to the bigger point of how fluid this class looks right now.
by guru4u on Nov 30, 2025 12:37 PM EST up reply actions
the thing with Appel is
The stuff might be there, but the numbers really haven’t, and it’s hard to see a college RHP going at or near the top of the draft without the statistical success to back it up. He’s either going to back up his claim to the top of the draft very quickly . . .or he’s going to sink just as fast.
As for Marrero . . .a good season at the plate combined with confirming that he is indeed a shortstop at the highest level might just get him there. True shortstops with good bats are hard to come by.

i was surprised by Marrero at 7 too. i thought he would go top three as of now.
by blue bulldog on Nov 30, 2025 3:08 PM EST up reply actions
Definitely will be a lot of shuffling going on... more than usual.
Especially with it being so prep heavy. If I had to take someone #1 right now I’d probably take Appel. Its easy to say Giolito, but to be realistic (if I had a job as a SD that I loved) I’d go with the safe choice who can help soon.

Nick Williams
that’s a name I’ve heard a lot for the first half of the 1st, but he’s not on here. Great size, videos and reports I’ve read seem very good. Obligatory Griffey/Strawberry comps for a big, skinny black outfielder.
Maybe the new CBA ensures guys like this go to college?

Nick Williams has fantastic tools but I've been hearing reports that he's VERY raw

I understand the reservations people have about Marrero...
but when I saw the Team USA CNT the ball absolutely flew off his bat. Gunshot sound.

It’s hard to see Marrero slipping past the Twins, if you ask me.
by limozeen on Nov 30, 2025 4:51 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah
I’m a big Marrero fan. I can see him going #1 overall if he has a good season. Plus I don’t think anyone is questioning whether he will stick at SS.
by guru4u on Nov 30, 2025 6:49 PM EST up reply actions
Marrero
is a legit SS. He can be a ML SS on D alone. The question is his bat. Ceiling is a Tulo lite if he hits the way he did as a freshman. After last year he looks more like a gap power guy, though. I’d take his D with gap power over half of ML SS’s, so I’d take him #1.
by TCapone30 on Nov 30, 2025 7:03 PM EST up reply actions
I guess the problem is
He doesn’t really walk, either. Unless he’s a tremendous defender at shortstop, even with the scarcity of quality prospects at that position, the fairly empty average seems to make him more of a solid regular type than a true impact player, and it’s hard to see that kind of player going No. 1. Houston really can’t afford to take that kind of chance.
by mrkupe on Nov 30, 2025 10:30 PM EST up reply actions
"really can't take that kind of chance"
seems a little ironic to use here….
usually that implies you take the safer pick
by blue bulldog on Dec 1, 2025 1:16 AM EST up reply actions
what I mean is
Houston really needs to make sure that the pick is a true impact-level talent.
by mrkupe on Dec 1, 2025 6:38 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah, I'm not a big fan
If he’s such a good hitter his results should be better.
I actually think Trey Williams could come on strong, I don’t know if enough to challenge for #1 though. I like the video I’ve seen and reports are he’s extremely advanced for a prep bat with big power potential and enough glove to play 3B.

Good list
Great mock ! Just IMO, Jays wise they always go with pitching early so personally for me, Weikel goes at 17 if he falls that far, and the Jays would be astounded if he did. AA also always pick the best avaiable LHP so Smoral looks good for them at 22.
Not that Valentin isn’t good, he’s great in fact, but I don’t see AA using a pick on a highschool hitter until the comp round if the last two drafts are an indication. I do see your idea of the Jays picking a huge overdraft like Thomas with their second pick in order to allocate enough money to signing Valentine, but with so many extra picks the 22 pick is not the time to be thinking about signability.
by Brando159 on Dec 1, 2025 1:15 PM EST reply actions
Jays Picks
I know last year was considered one of the deepest drafts in history, but I really like the top 40 or so picks in this draft as well. I hope we can get a third first-rounder for Kelly Johnson, which would potentially give us 7 of the first 70 picks.
My favourite players so far are Carlos Correjia, David Dahl, Yesmuel Valentin, Rio Ruiz, Albert Almora, Hunter Virant, Max Fried, Lucas Simms, Ty Hensley, and Marcus Stroman, and Taylore Cherry.
Knowing AA, he will probably go pitcher heavy early, but I would love if the Jays by some miracle got Correjia, Dahl, and Ruiz in the first (assuming a Kelly Johnson pick), followed by Hensley or Stroman with our first supplemental.
I personally think Matt Smoral is overrated. I’ve seen him a few times and while the 6’8 lefty package is enticing, I just wasn’t impressed by the quality or projection of his stuff.

Also no Nick Williams? The best prep position player in the class?
by JaysFanToronto on Dec 1, 2025 7:02 PM EST up reply actions
I also can’t see Joey Gallo not being in the first round, he’s the concensus top power hitting HS who also has promise on the mound.
