Jonathan Schoop v Matt Dominguez
Dominguez hit better, in a full season, than Jonathan Schoop did at the same stage in thier development (age 19 season). Of course Schoop-a-Doop could develop better in the next couple of seasons. However much I may be in the big minority here in, I still say that Dominguiez’s age 20 and 21 seasons (at AA and AA) aren’t anything to sneeze at, and he has the sweet, big league, glove at that hot corner.
If you are just comparing these two players, I’d think the voting would be closer to 50/50. This all depending on your preference for nebulous upside or, a player who there is good reasons to think may have just as high of a ceiling, who is two years further along. Just my opinion.

if Schoop
can stick at SS there’s extra positional value there as well
by blue bulldog on Dec 29, 2025 4:20 PM EST up reply actions
Yes
True but, I suppose its not a great sign if they are already playing him at 2b and 3b. He may end up as a valuable defender at one of those spots too but, so will Dominguez.

i assumed they were playing Schoop there
because of Machado
but i could be wrong
by blue bulldog on Dec 30, 2025 3:54 AM EST up reply actions
Perhaps
I think the consensus of what I’ve heard/read/saw is that he is okay there now but, perhaops profiles best at another spot. He looks like a third-vaseman to me physically but, perhaps he ends up as a plus offensive second baseman. I’m not certian, like anyone else I think, of his future defensive role.

You
love yourself some Dominguez. By next poll I predict I will be swayed to vote for him.

cool, vote Dominguez
Hey, I appreciate it ‘Cutch. I’m not trying to drive anybody nuts talkin’ about him but, I do feel he is unnoticed lately. When hot prospects don’t develop into superstars right away, often they get writen off even before they hit the big leagues. I think he’s been pushed hard and, handled it pretty well - better than the hitting numbers look at first glance.

I like your reasoning with Matt Dominguez in general
& also the compelling previous contrast with Michael Olt. I can’t say I see myself voting for Dominguez soon, but he is probably a safer bet than a lot of the other guys left (including Jon Schoop & others I’m inclined to vote for) to get a look in MLB as his defense will probably give him a look as a regular & he could be the most likely of all the guys above with 2 plus votes to contribute in 2012.
I do agree with you that Dominguez has been far from ‘terrible’ so far, but maybe I just wasn’t high enough on him to begin with so I’ve undervalued him. He has been handled aggressively & he’s held his own.

In general, you are probably one of the most accurate posters here
You deserve more respect. Also, I agree with you here. Dominguez is a better prospect than schoop

Dominguez has the glove
He will be a major league player just based on that, so that should get him some respect. However, if he cannot hit, he won’t be more than a bench player. His minor league career wRC+ is about 102, but he hasn’t well above average since 2009. Schoop’s minor league career wRC+ is about 119. Schoop is 2+ years younger, and could possibly be in AAA in two years, although I would bet against it. Maybe I am undervaluing Dominguez, but his couple years have not been that great with the bat. I know he is young, and has been pushed aggressively, but he has looked terrible offensively, and I am not sure you can just put the blame entirely on his promotion schedule.
by cookiedabookie on Dec 29, 2025 10:33 PM EST up reply actions
well
CDB, I can agree that his past couple of years have been dissapointing for some but, I think they fall a ways short of terrible. H has shown some pop, better than decent contact rate, and walked an okay amount as a very young player for both AA and AAA.
Schoop is a nice-looking young player but, is merely exactly wghere Dominguez was three years ago except Dominguez spent the full-season at A+ and, had a better season there. Just saying.

"Terrible" was probably too harsh
But definitely not good.
As far as what Dominguez did three years ago, I have to weigh that less than what he has done the last two years. Like I said, I am not sure you can just put the blame of his most recent performance entirely on his aggressive promotions.
by cookiedabookie on Dec 30, 2025 11:12 AM EST up reply actions
League context...
The average OPS in the PCL last year was .807. Dominguez has age on his side and a great glove, but right now he’s looking a whole lot like a guy with second division starter upside to me. Didn’t vote for Schoop here, but I’d take him over Dominguez. IMO, good ARL seasons 3 years removed don’t give a player any credit if he hasn’t built on that success since. I’ll take the guy who’s hit more recently.
Side note: if we’re giving credit to guys who put up decent offensive numbers despite being really young for their league, I feel like people are completely overlooking the year Francisco Martinez had as a 20 y/o who had no business being rushed to Double-A. I don’t personally think he deserves consideration for a top-100 list, but I think he’d be getting a lot more press if the Tigers had been more rational about their assignments and he’d spent the year in the FSL.
by slamcactus on Dec 30, 2025 12:34 AM EST up reply actions
Also...
jesus the teams really need to start thinking about moving fences back in the PCL. A league where the average player OPS’s over .800 just can’t be good for development.
by slamcactus on Dec 30, 2025 12:38 AM EST up reply actions
Good point
. . . on Francisco Martinez. He is completely overloooked, for almost evry standaerd reson here but, he is a decent prospect. I like guys who have the glove and the hit tool and, are young. I think they can develop tools around that.
I think it is a fallacy that Dominguez hasn’t hit the past two years. For his age and, league, he’s done alright. It isn’t an excuse, it is just really challenging to hit in AA at 20 (like you said earlier) and, in AAA at age 21.

To the Billy Hamilton voters
Is that a fantasy vote or a real life vote? I honestly don’t see him as even a top 150 prospect in terms of real baseball. And I think if he were a normal type of very good base stealer, we wouldn’t even be considering him for the top 100.
by auclairkeithbc on Dec 29, 2025 8:08 PM EST reply actions
top 150 isn't that crazy
If his offensive ceiling is Vince Coleman, which I think is reasonable. Coleman averaged about 2.4 fWAR in his top five seasons. However, he played left field. With a similar slightly below average defense, if Hamilton stays at SS, he will get a 15 run, or 1.5 fWAR boost just from postitional adjustment, putting his ceiling at about a 4 win player. That is pretty good (borderline all-star, only 8 shortstops in majors last year reached 4 fWAR).
Now, if people were more confident he could stay at SS and continue progressing as a hitter into the majors, he would be much higher on the prospect lists. But top 150 assumes he still has a bit more to prove, but it is reasonable to project that type of improvement. I have him in my top 125 at the moment, albeit the back end.
by cookiedabookie on Dec 29, 2025 10:12 PM EST up reply actions
Oh
Well, top 150 or even 125 isn’t crazy. I personally have him outside mine, but voting for him right now basically means top 75.
by auclairkeithbc on Dec 29, 2025 10:32 PM EST up reply actions
somewhere between 75-80, yes
That is too high for me, but if someone believes in the ceiling, than it is reasonable.
by cookiedabookie on Dec 29, 2025 10:40 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah, what's the case for him over Simmons for instance?
Hamilton is a year younger, but also a level behind. He was significantly worse with the bat and the strikeouts are a pretty big red flag for someone with no power. He obviously has a major advantage in speed and baserunning, though it is somewhat lessened by what are likely to be OBP issues. I just don’t see nearly enough there to make up for the huge advantage Simmons has with the glove.
by nixa37 on Dec 29, 2025 11:55 PM EST up reply actions
Agree with you on Simmons over Hamilton
Simmons is in my top 100, Hamilton not quite.

I’d also point out that, although highly controversial, if a ballplayer is really the 101st best prospect in the minor leagues (or wherever you guys have Hamilton), they usually do not becoime a big leaguer of any sort of aclaim.

I disagree with your take on prospects outside the top 100
There are too many variables for that to be true. Starting with whom makes the list, how deep the talent is at the time in the minor leagues, and the age of the prospect in relationship to level of competition and meeting their overall potential.
Let’s take Hamilton and Simmons for example. Hamilton will be 21 yrs old this season and will probably play High-A ball. I would say that he still has plenty of time to develop and meet his ceiling. Even if it takes 4 more years for him to reach the majors and he only becomes a solid regular / utility player who can steal a bag, there is value in that to a MLB club. That kind of player can have a decent career, similar to Emilio Bonifacio, Alexi Casilla or Maicer Izturis.
Simmons (who coincidently played High-A last year as a 21yr old) was ranked # 104 on BenMc’s Top 125 a few days ago. So I guess he should just call it quits and start selling insurance, right.
Not that BenMc’s list is the gospel we all should be reading, but it is a list none the less. I guess I’m just saying the jury is still out on all of these guys, ranked #4, #40 or #104.
Just for comparison, KLaw’s 2009 Top 100 list didn’t include the following players that he said “just missed”. Philippe Aumont, Dellin Betances, Hank Conger, Dan Cortes, Vin Mazzaro, Juan Ramirez, Wilson Ramos, Josh Reddick, Dayan Viciedo & Sean West.
As you can see, some of these guys have already reached the majors with varying degrees of success, while others are just starting their big league career. Betances will probably still be on Top 100 lists this season. I’m going to guess around #80 on the Community List. (#108 for BenMc)
In the process of building a winning organization, there is value in more than just the Top 100 players in any given year. If there wasn’t, the draft would only be 4 rounds, not 40.
by Captain Jeter on Dec 30, 2025 10:24 AM EST reply actions
There is some truth to this
but, a couple points . . .
Your Keith Law list only affirms my thoughts right? Most of those guys have haven’t contributed in the major leagues, yet. Its a little early to look at those guys for the most part though. Another large part of my point is that a player like Wilson Ramos WASN’T a top 100-125 player that year. He was one of the top 50! That’s where I had him ranked anyways.
If Andrelton Simmons goes on to have a solid to great major leaghue career BenMc or, any of us, will wish we had ranked him a lot higher than #104. Yes, Andrelton perhaps should look for other work if he is ACTUALLY the 104th best player in the minors but, he is likely a lot better than that. There simply aren’t anything close to 104 good, future major league players in any given season or, even close to it.
