Community Positional Prospect #1/#2

It seems like overall people were happy with separating the lists into a positional list and a pitching list, then combining them into an overall list.  I am going to get this started, and I'll take some type of ownership over this list, but if others want to chip in, or if people want someone else to take over, that is fine with me.  We've been talking too long about getting this started, so I figured I might as well do it.

I believe we used 7% as the level a prospect must achieve if he's to remain on the list but certainly this can be tweaked.  Anyone who feels this percentage should be changed, please mention it in the discussion.  Make sure you suggest potential new candidates/testers as well, so we can keep a full list to vote on.

We will be using the +1 system.  If there is a close vote, we'll do a tie-breaker.  I feel strongly that we should only have heads up tie-breakers, not 3 way ones, but I'll do it however the majority thinks is best.

Without further delay, let's start with these 10:

Star-divide

CANDIDATES:

Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, Jurickson Profar, Devon Mesoraco, Manny Machado, Anthony Rendon, Jesus Montero, Travis D' Arnaud, Will Myers, Bubba Starling

In what St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa called a "big day" for his club, starter Chris Carpenter took the mound for his first session of live batting practice and promptly buzzed the fuzz on catcher Jason LaRue’s chin with an errant fastball.

"Sorry," Carpenter called from the mound.

"Don’t say you’re sorry," LaRue barked back.

"He said it," pitching coach Dave Duncan said from the side of the cage, "but he didn’t mean it."

too much swing and miss for me with harper……i know he has improved, but this is going to be an issue for him down the road. not saying he can’t overcome it to some extent, but he is going to get his fair share of K’s.

just really prefer trout’s overall game — what he did in the majors as a teenager was pretty strong.

by Los Gueros on Nov 6, 2025 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe you should bother looking up numbers next time?

Not sure how anyone can argue for Trout over Harper on the basis of Harper having too much swing and miss in his game immediately following a season where Harper struck out less when they played at the same minor league level despite being 16 months younger.

If you want to argue for Trout over Harper stick to the overall game part of the equation as a very strong case can be made there. Basing it off on Harper’s perceived swing and miss “issues” (which are almost entirely based on pre-draft scouting reports) just doesn’t make for a convincing argument.

by nixa37 on Nov 6, 2025 9:59 PM EST up reply actions

Hear hear

I’m still perplexed by those who won’t let go of their questions about Harper’s ‘hit tool’. Especially considering just about all actual scouting reports & the season he just had across two levels.

Like that you snuck Bogaerts in there, I think he’s going to be wintertime discovery for a lot of evaluators.

by siddfynch on Nov 6, 2025 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

Arenado vs. Olt

Olt has more power, takes more walks, and is a better defender. That’s more than enough positives to outweigh Arenado’s advantages in average and K rate, at least for me.

http://bullpenbanter.com

RIP Randy "Macho Man" Savage

by gatling on Nov 6, 2025 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

i would take Arenado over Olt

the power gap between Arenado and Olt could close in the future, and Arenado is already hitting so insanely well, despite being two years younger

and it’s not like the K rate difference is small. it’s a huge difference. it remains to be seen if Olt can drop his K rate in AA, but guys who strikeout 24% of the time tend to start striking out 30% of the time in the majors.

by blue bulldog on Nov 6, 2025 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, it could

but I wouldn’t want to bet on that happening. I never said the K rate difference was small, it’s a big difference and will likely continue to be. Olt has the type of power and walk rates that can easily support that massive a K rate though.

and

Arenado has the pure hitting ability to support a less-powerful bat.

by another know it all on Nov 6, 2025 7:17 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, I covered that already

Arenado also has lesser defensive tools, even with the changing opinions that he can stick at 3B now. I’ll take the guy who projects for more power, equal or better OBP, and better defense. I can understand why someone would prefer the guy with a better batting average, I just disagree with it.

http://bullpenbanter.com

RIP Randy "Macho Man" Savage

by gatling on Nov 6, 2025 7:55 PM EST up reply actions

Hmmm

I’ll admit I’m late to Mike Olt. For walk rate and power, do you mean better raw tools, or results to date? Because Arenado’s 2.5 yr age advantage could negate a lot of offensive gaps between him and an older player…

by siddfynch on Nov 6, 2025 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

Both actually

It’s possible Arenado changes his approach to take more pitches and up his walk rate, but I wouldn’t want to bank on that. He has a good feel for hitting so I’m not sure he’d make big changes in that manner. I also don’t think Arenado has as much present or future power as Olt does, and Arenado isn’t a guy that has room to add a lot to his frame so I’m not sure I see him closing that gap either.

I may end up wrong, and I’m ok with that if it happens.

http://bullpenbanter.com

RIP Randy "Macho Man" Savage

by gatling on Nov 6, 2025 7:12 PM EST up reply actions

I understand you on all but this one thing

“It’s possible Arenado changes his approach to take more pitches and up his walk rate, but I wouldn’t want to bank on that. He has a good feel for hitting so I’m not sure he’d make big changes in that manner. "

You seem to imply that Arenado’s “good feel for hitting” might work against him, which seems like an odd way to go about looking at his skillset. I can’t really see a way in which his advanced ability to hit actually makes him a less likely player to take more walks in the future.

by mrkupe on Nov 6, 2025 8:28 PM EST up reply actions

incentives?

players with an advanced ability to hit don’t take walks, because there’s no need to take more pitches?

i’d bet there’s a general inverse correlation between BA and BB%

by blue bulldog on Nov 6, 2025 11:11 PM EST up reply actions

It's not so much that it works against him

it’s more that his contact ability is good enough that he doesn’t have to be as patient. I might be all wet on this, time will tell I guess.

I agree with doing only two people in a tiebreaker

And only if they are within one vote of each other.
Also, I would avoid the 7% overturn until probably the first two polls are done - I think the top two are pretty set, and there will be little voting for the rest of the candidates until Harper and Trout are on.

by cookiedabookie on Nov 6, 2025 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

Too many people are going to get no votes, so I won’t eliminate like 9 of the 10 pitchers for pitching poll #2. Probably I’ll just put in one replacement for Moore, but if a couple people say they will definitely vote for someone @ #2, I’ll consider dropping one of the bottom guys from the list.

by auclairkeithbc on Nov 6, 2025 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

Also

If like 95% of people end up voting for either Harper or Trout, I don’t think we’ll need a run-off. What do people think of this?

We need to take away the lower than 5% falls off thing

thinking of incentives, the best player doesnt get the votes, people will vote for the player they like the most if they have less than 5% as to not have them miss being voted in the next 5 spots… could skew the results

Well

How would you suggest we decide which testers to take off the poll? Some players will be tested too early and we can’t just keep them on the list if they aren’t getting any votes.

by auclairkeithbc on Nov 6, 2025 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, there has to be a cutoff point somewhere

Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t see much point to the argument being made against the 5%(or 7%) cutoff level.

renominations?

Instead of just adding testers, have a nominations board running concurrently with the main vote. All those that fall off the main board can be moved back in by being at the top of the nomination board.

by gabrielsyme on Nov 6, 2025 11:58 PM EST up reply actions

I think

Each poll, people will say who they want to get on the next poll. There will be usually a few players that get on the new polls each time, as someone wins and usually a couple won’t get enough votes (whether it is 5% or 7% or whatever…we’ll play with that number until we get it right). So I don’t think we need a complicated system. It is pretty obvious in the pitchers poll anyway that Hultzen seems like the most popular add. There are a few hitters now being discussed and a few “next add” hitters lists. I’ll do my best to respect the general consensus, but if no one speaks up in the “Testers” section, it will be tough for them to get an add. Luckily it won’t matter much, because newly added players are extremely unlikely to win a new poll. We’ll have an “Others” section where people can actually vote for non-listed players too, which will be a sign they should be added soon.

by auclairkeithbc on Nov 7, 2025 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

I'm closing this poll

With 59.2% of the vote, Bryce Harper is the winner. Mike Trout, with 38.8% is going to be the #2 community positional prospect. No one objected to this idea, and quite a few were in favor of it, so I’m doing it, as Jurickson Profar was the next highest vote getter with 2.0% of the vote.

by auclairkeithbc on Nov 7, 2025 2:04 PM EST reply actions

I don't have a problem with it here

But in general I don’t like the idea of choosing someone without having a vote on it. Obviously it won’t happen here, but in future cases its entirely possible that a high enough percentage of the voters for the winner will choose the #3 guy that he could end up passing #2. Besides, it won’t be too long until we have a backlog of guys waiting to get on the overall community list anyway.

by nixa37 on Nov 7, 2025 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

I don't plan on doing this again.

It might happen, but it becomes extremely unlikely to happen later on.
