Jarred Cosart?

Ruben Alaniz is holding it together alright in the Cal league, he has a nice fastball. Things will be a lot more interesting on the pitching front once Houser, Armstrong, Velasquez, etc. get going in short season ball.

I liked a whole lot when Houston drafted him (2nd round ‘10). Projectable body, good mechanics and athleticism, from California high school. Just can’t stay healthy. Had stress fracture in his elbow in ’09 and had tommy john after ’10.

But he really is impressive, The A’s were right to get Milone in that deal over Rosenbaum if that’s what it was down to, but man the Nats may have something here (again)

I wonder why Gilliam is the guy the Nats wanted from the A’s tho? (to complete the Gio G. deal)

Not much for him at this level.

by mrkupe on May 5, 2025 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

It seems

That the Astros try to avoid sending promising pitchers to the Cal League for the most part. Buchanan and Alaniz are the best to go through there the last couple years, and they’re pretty fringy guys. As a result they end up with a lot of situations like Tropeano’s where they don’t want to force him straight to AA, but he’s clearly too advanced for the SAL. I think in less than a month he and Folty should both be in Corpus Christi though.

Gyorko bomb

#5

1-3

by Woodland League on May 5, 2025 9:04 PM EDT reply actions

He could use a little seasoning at 2nd, but he hasn't looked bad there.

I haven’t seen him lay out yet, so I’m not exactly sure what his range is but he looks to be able to make the routine plays. He’s just a little tentative at the moment. This is the second time he’s started slow at AA then turned things around. I like that, shows he can make adjustments.

Once we can get him at 2nd, Quentin in LF and Grandal behind the plate, the Padres might have something looking like a major league lineup.

by padmadfanman on May 6, 2025 4:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Question for the Padres' fans out there...

I’m not sure about the Gyorko move..especially with Cory Spangenburg already at second.

And with the move of James Darnell to the OF, that leaves them with no real 3B prospects in the organization.

So, what’s up?

by mlbprospectpulse on May 6, 2025 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

my guess

I’m thinking the Gyorko move to 2B may be precautionary in case the team either can’t or decides they will not trade Chase Headley. If Headley leaves San Diego, Gyorko can shift back to 3B. If Gyorko is at 2B and Spangenburg is major league ready at some point at 2B, then Gyorko can shift back to 3B at that time.

I’d prefer Gyorko at 3B, and I think it’ll play out that way in the end. For now, playing second ensures that he won’t be blocked and forced to freshen up @ 2B once he gets to a higher level.

by mrkupe on May 6, 2025 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

speculating, but Headley is the one guy they have now they can build around, along with Alonso

Struggled a bit with control coming out of the pen for the 5th after Sanchez came out, 18 pitches, 10 balls and the BB. Settled in, ended up with 49 pitches, 30 strikes. Curveball was working well, at least 3 swinging strikes including 2 punchouts and a number of other called strikes. 7GB, 2 LD, 1FB

by MjwW on May 5, 2025 9:04 PM EDT reply actions

Announcers didn't give any readings

For either him or Sanchez, I’m thinking the gun may have been down. The hit he gave up with a first pitch fastball that was jumped on

by MjwW on May 5, 2025 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure that's a split decision

I don’t think Nicolino is quite in the same tier ceiling-wise as the other two. I’d take Sanchez with his premium breaking ball, but I can see the argument for Syndergaard and his big body. Each of the three offer different strengths. The Norris/Comer combo we’ll be seeing later this year is really interesting, too.

by mrkupe on May 5, 2025 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, that's basically it

Also, Adonis Cardona could follow the same Norris/Comer track, and if not this year then I have to think next year

Don;t have tonight's numbers added in

But there’s been a couple of issues:
- not throwing first pitches strikes (62/120 batters faced)
- not getting swinging strikes (30/179 swings, 83% contact rate which is not bad but not very good either)
-

by St.Steve on May 6, 2025 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions

It sounds like his command within the strike zone is very inconsistant..

When he misses, he misses over the heart of the plate with the pitch elevated, which leads to lots of hard hit balls. His stuff is unremarkable, so this will have to change for him to advance any further.

Gattis went yard again

That makes 3 in 5 AA games and 12 in 26 games between high A and AA. I have no idea what to make of him because the closest comps in career path are basically Josh Hamilton and pitchers who switched back to hitting late in the game. He’s at least hitting his way into legitimate prospect status. I think he could work out as a 1B/DH that plays a game or two a week as a backup catcher for an AL team.
