MOD Dodgers
Thanks John for allowing me to participate. A little background info on me: my name is Jared. As I said in the application thread, I've been following the draft since 2004. I've written for a few blogs and my latest venture is writing about the Dodgers for scout.com. I've spoken with Dodgers assistant GM Logan White a few times about the draft, including this spring. But enough about me, let's get to the more important issue.
I've been a part of this process before and like it more when people are actively involved. I tend to draft the player who I think is the best available and not who I think the Dodgers will take. I don't believe in drafting for need.
Now that I've said my piece, let's start talking prospects. There are some hitters I like in the first round, mostly Stryker Trahan and Richie Shaffer. Both are power bats with defensive questions. While the Dodgers could use some elite bats in their system, I'm going to try to avoid overrating hitters.
There are some pitchers I like as well. Walker Weickel intrigues me as a projection guy. Zach Eflin and Nick Travieso are high ceiling power arms.
I'm anxious to hear from you about prospects you like, don't like. What your approach would br on draft day. Let's make this fun.
The Dodgers picks are:
18th
51st
82nd
113th

Isn’t it almost a given anymore that the Dodgers go after the projectable HS starting pitcher. Seems like Max Fried is exactly the type of pitcher that the Dodgers like to draft.

Fried
Fried will almost definitely be off the board when the Dodgers pick. Also, 2 of the past 3 top picks have been college lefties.
Like I said, I’ll be choosing who I believe is the best player available. I’ll try to adhere to a realistic budget.

A guy like Hunter Virant seems to be to have a Cole Hamels comp. Big lefty, fluid motion, advanced pitchability with room to grow. Plus change up.

his motion
sort of reminds me of cliff lee’s motion

You gotta Fister, Recker, then Parker outside

Virant
Saw him this spring. The Lee comp is good. Mechanics were inconsistent as was his velocity. Has potential but not sure I’d pop him at 18.

i don't know anything about him
i just thought from a couple videos that he looked like lee, that’s just about it

He patterns himself after Lee, so good eye.

Virant sits 88-91 but can pop 94. Very fluid motion and room to add strength. Has good pitchability with the best change in Califorina prep range. Has a slow 72mph curveball and a harder slider at 81. A pitcher with upside still.

I agree. Just not sure I’d take him at 18.

I would go after best player available and draft for upside especially with the first 2 picks.
Players I like at the following spots:
18: Eflin, Trahan, Addison Russell
51: Daniel Robertson, Peter O’Brien (if available), Corey Seager
82: Cody Poteet
113. Tom Murphy, J.O. Berrios
Thoughts?
