Around SBN: Kevin Garnett Shuts Everyone Up, Wills Celtics Into Round 2

Phillies MOD #1

So I have the Phillies. They don't have their first pick until 40, followed by picks 54, 77, 95, and 125 through round three. Over the last four years, they have picked a HS player with each of their first choices, 3 position players and one pitcher. Over the first three rounds, they have picked:

7 HS position players

3 HS pitchers

2 College position players

3 College pitchers

I think it is safe to assume that pick 40 should be used on a prep player, probably a position player. Given the limits of the new CBA, the Phillies have only $4,916,900 to spend in the first ten rounds. Given that number, we can't go too crazy if a player falls to 40 with big demands. Who is everyone interested in at 40, given the parameters of a HS position player? Or do we want to go the prep arm route, given the depth in that area this year? I will post my own ideas after hearing from others. I am really hoping to hear from Phillies fans about how they think the Phillies mock should go.

So at pick 40 who do you like

If I am looking at prep position players (just started more in-depth ranking, so this is up for a change over time):

Top ten:
Lewis Brinson - OF
Nick Williams - OF
Rio Ruiz - 3B
Corey Seager - SS
C.J. Hinojosa - SS
Tanner Rahier - SS
Clint Coulter - C
Anthony Alford - OF
Jameis Winston - OF
James Ramsey - OF

I like the depth the Phillies have in the system currently, they're one of the few teams

that can go to the minor leagues and get a quality replacement for an injured player for just about every position. Just look at Freddie Galvez.

That said, a HS player at #40 is going to be four years away at best, and I’d much rather look at replacing Rollins with that pick than spending it on an outfielder who could turn into the next Anthony Hewitt.

From your list, I’d go with either Seager or Hinojosa, leaning towards CJ.

I, too, am afraid of toolsy outfielders. My favorite is Rio Ruiz, but they drafted a bunch of 3B last year (H Martinez, Cody Asche, Mitch Walding.) The catching depth in the Phillies’ system is not too great, so Coulter might be good. My top 4: 1) Coulter 2) Ruiz 3) Seager 4) Ramsey

Sidenote: is there any chance guys from this list are available when the Phillies’ 54th pick comes around?

It is possible

I would say likely that one or more is, Winston and Hinojosa being the two most likely. But they will take much more than the slot allows to sign them, so it would mean later picks would be cheap organizational filler types.

Maybe they could manage it if they pick James Ramsey., since he’s a relatively cheap sign because he’s a college senior

Yeah

but I have a feeling he will be gone by then.
Bigger question is where do we want to go with pick 54. Maybe a prep arm?

Phillies "types"

Toolsy, raw, athletic high school players (Hewitt, Dom Brown, Aaron Altherr, et al)

Big HS pitchers with projectable velo (Jon Pettibone, Trevor May, Julio Rodriguez, etc)

college guys coming off of injuries or struggles - they like to pop HS guys who drop off their senior years as well (Jon Singleton comes to mind)

They have typically shied away from prep middle infielders in the first three rounds. They picked Roman Quinn last year, however. He also could project in center, we’ll see when short season ball starts up where they play him.
