Alen Hanson - Pirates

Osuna has done well so far, but Hanson plays a tougher position, has plus speed, and can hit all day.

Santos (Pirates) made great use of his opportunity this season until he injured his knee.

Domingo Tapia - Mets

High 90’s sinking fastball and he hasn’t walked anyone in Lo-A. Might not be a sleeper any more but he was my favorite pre-season.

I'm partial to Tyler Collins...

…Go Flying Tigers!
He’s not particularly toolsy and may not be a great defender out there, but all he’s done is hit so far in his college/minors career.

by drewfull on May 4, 2025 12:28 PM EDT reply actions

Some Cubs "Sleepers" off to a good start

Kyler Burke - Former OF has taken to the mound where there are reports of two plus pitches and a developing change. Fastball can touch mid-90’s. He’s old for his level, obviously (just turned 24), but power lefties always intrigue, and he’s off to a good start. That said, is he a starter or a pen arm? He’s currently piggybacking, which doesn’t tell us that much. Also, he’ll be a 6 year minor league FA after this season.

PJ Francescon - IIRC, John actually had him on his original list before I argued to swap him out. The 2011 40th rounder’s fastball is in the low 90’s, but shows some promise on both the breaking ball and the changeup. Like Burke, a bit older (23). Ceiling’s probably mid-rotation, projects more as end of the rotation/pen.

Michael Jensen - 2011 26th round overslot JC kid was noted for his fastball/breaking ball combination. Off to a great start in Peoria, and hey … he’s age appropriate (21)!

Ben Wells - Does he fall under sleeper classification? Seems likely, relative to some of the other arms above. Big righty was a 7th round overslot in 2010, has gotten off to a solid start in Peoria in a piggybacking role, with an added focus on throwing first-pitch strikes. Breaking ball has flashed on occasion this year, but his bread and butter is his sinker. Hey … he’s young for the level (19)!

Rubi Silva - 22 year (turns 23 in June) Cuban signee always had intriguing offensive tools. One of the few early-season breakouts for the Cubs system, he’s sporting a .321/.374/.452 line. Okay, that .409 BABIP isn’t going to hold, but the intriguing part of his start is that his walk rate is significantly up. 18 total walks in 495 AB’s last year - already has 7 in 84 AB’s.

Dae-Eun Rhee - ERA looks ugly (partly due to .357 BABIP and some early season long ball issues), but his K and BB rates are similar to last year’s. Last year, he got better as the weather warmed up.

Dallas Beeler - 41st round pick in 2010 coming off TJ, the big righty is up in AA Tennessee. Exceptional command, gets ground balls. Doesn’t have Wells sinker, though. Can he tighten up the breaking ball? Ceiling is probably mid-rotation, but also probably projects more as a 4/5 guy.

Alberto Cabrera and Marcus Hatley - Tossing Cabrera in here, because I recall that John wasn’t that huge on him. Cubs demoted him back to AA, and moved the 23 year old to the pen. In ST with the big league club, he lit up the guns, but has to work on some consistency. That said, mid-upper 90’s heat out of the pen with a good slider. Since Frank Batista was promoted, Cabrera is getting some closing looks in AA. 24 year old Hatley was a 39th rounder in 2006 who had TJ. Big time stuff, with mid-upper 90’s heat and a good slider as well. Both have late inning potential.

Ben Wells is a major sleeper for me. Gets a TON of grounders, good walk rate … K-rate may improve as he learns how to pitch more. Seems to have the floor of a ground-ball specialist and a ceiling that may improve as he fills out.

by WrenFGun on May 4, 2025 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess it depends on definition of sleeper

Does a guy who got an overslot bonus a year or two ago really count as a sleeper?

by mrkupe on May 4, 2025 12:37 PM EDT reply actions

idk

i just take it as “guys you think are really talented / have a shot to shoot up lists, and they aren’t being given enough pub”

… aaron sanchez and syndergaard definitely no longer count.

so my 3:
Yordano Ventura [if he still counts?]
Will Swanner
Jarek Cunningham

by daveh33 on May 4, 2025 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

k

I don’t want to post about somebody who has already gotten talk on this thread . . .John nailed a handful of my best, and Swanner is an interesting one too, lol.

by mrkupe on May 4, 2025 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

depends

but does a guy who is age-appropriate for his level, has only pitched for 2 full pro seasons, and got a 525K bonus count as a sleeper?

It really comes down to the player. Personally, I wouldn’t have listed Wells/Rhee as sleepers, but I don’t know how people view things, and John had Rhee as a sleeper.

That said, let’s take Michael Jensen. Sure, he was over-slot, but there were some questions on his ability to be a starter (there was chatter this winter/last fall that he might be fast-tracked as a pen arm). I don’t recall him making many Cubs top prospect lists this winter, and he’s age appropriate for his level. Doesn’t mean that he’s going to make it as a starter, but for me, that certainly sounds like a guy that would’ve been classified as a sleeper for many.

If we’re taking daveh’s standard for a sleeper below, then Francescon should be taken off my Cubs list, but I included him because John was initially leaning towards having him on his Cubs list this past winter.

by toonsterwu on May 4, 2025 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

didn't come out as clean

as I wanted to. But the first part was referring to Rhee, who I wouldn’t have counted as a sleeper this year (I would’ve counted him as a sleeper last year, though) because he was coming off a strong 2nd half. I know many use Top Prospect Lists to judge who is a sleeper or not, but for me, I would also consider whether or not a guy has a chance of getting appreciably better as a factor, and considering how he finished last year, I viewed him as a solid guy with a solid mid-rotation ceiling, but he probably wasn’t going to get appreciably better.

To each their own on how they define things as subjective as such.

Tommy La Stella

2B for the Braves in Lynchburg all he’s done is hit .333/.433/.542 this season in the CAR league. 11/3 BB/K ratio, only K’d 3 times all season! Haven’t been able to read many scouting reports on him but it looks like the man can stick. Anyone seen him in person?

by Kerry's Kids on May 4, 2025 12:46 PM EDT reply actions

I second Jace Peterson

I’m also a big fan of Ravel Santana, if he counts as a sleeper. Probably a bit too high profile. Kubitza and La Stella for the Braves, also.

now that he is with the Padres I think he is going to take off as a prospect. To date he is 5-0 with a 2.16 ERA and 29 K’s and only 3 walks…I could see him being similar to Erlin as they both have demonstrated very good command.

My favorite sleeper

not part of this list but you labeled him as a sleeper in your top 20 list and he’s someone i’ve been possibly the (second) worst broken record about this guy: dan straily

45 k’s, 11 bb’s in 35 innings, only given up 1 homer, unfortunately a poor groundout to flyout ratio (0.88) so far, with a 2.83 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP

Not sure if he really qualifies as a sleeper, given how much the fanfare he received when he was signed.

He has been horrible up until this year, and looks to finally be putting something together.

Mark Cohoon, LHP, NYM

Former 2009 Sterling Award winner for AA MVP & 2010 MiLB All-Star. Works best when his pedestrain 2 seam fastball complements his arsenal of precision change pieces and not the other way around. Very cerebral and stays out of trouble when he pitches to his skills and not above what he knows he’s not. Hard to say he was rushed considering his age and college background but his abrupt 2011 promotion to triple-A Buffalo did not serve him well. For those in the know, he doesn’t project beyond the role of a LOOGY or fringe back end starter but I have faith in his ability to stick if given an opportunity in either capacities. For a pitcher that primarily works with off speed offerings its a bit surprising that neither his curve ball nor his slider have developed into plus offering territory but maybe 2012 brings this about. One thing is for sure, his ability to capitalize on changing eye levels complemented by his emphasis of controlled movement are assets that work in his favor.

He's such a soft tosser that the odds are against him.

Plus, he’s had pretty terrible peripherals since midway last season.

by FrancoTAU on May 4, 2025 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

His stint at Bufffalo was an absolute wash

He was rushed up to Buffalo for injury depletion demands from the big club that pulled directly from the Bison’s rotation. His body of work is best represented by all his work up to and after his disasterous 2011. He was shell shocked by the abrupt and totally unexpected insertion into the triple-A rotation. He was getting shelled because he abandoned his off speed offerings which weren’t getting hitters into favorable counts. His reliance on the 2 seamer and his unpalatable 4 seamer got him into trouble early and often which was compounded by his utter lack of control of the 2 seamer which he hadn’t yet experienced in his career. Like I said, absolute wash. He should be in triple-A by seasons end and I fully expect a much more stable & improved line of performance at the level given his current reversion to his career norms. If he doesn’t pull it off by next season at Buffalo, only then will I consider him an organizational depth piece.

Great tools and has shown signs of being an impressive across-the-board producer. For a guy who is quickly laying claim to being one of the best prospects in his system, he doesn’t get much pub.

Brian Pointer

He strikes out too much (25% this year) but he’s also got a .909 OPS to go along with 5 homers and 5 steals for Lakewood this year. I don’t ever expect him to be a top 50 guy or anything, but I think he could end up turning into a useful player at the Major League Level.

interesting to see adalberto santos mentioned here

i m not quite sure what to make of him, and the fact that he hasn’t shown much power in AA makes me pause, in spite of the slash line. i’d love to hear John’s thoughts on him…

Dbacks

Chase Anderson

Apparently has the best changeup on the farm, throws low 90s with his fastball, and uses a cutter as his third pitch.

He’s missing bats at AA level, which is always good to see. I think he can be a major league starter, even if only back-end, as long as he can stay healthy and build up innings.

by blue bulldog on May 4, 2025 3:28 PM EDT reply actions

DSL kids

I’ll take Jeimer Candelario (K’s too much, but nice pop and great patience), Orlando Arcia, and Juan “The butcher” Santana (28 errors in just 65 games at short last year).

I have Arcia in my top 75-100 already, and Candelario on the cusp. Santana maybe top 130 or so.

Good premise for a thread, John!

by Mekonsrock on May 4, 2025 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

what are you judging Candelario by

to say he K’s too much? The reports on the instruct work last fall? Because he certainly didn’t K all that much in DSL - 13.8%.

by toonsterwu on May 4, 2025 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Fair question

In general, I wouldn’t be at all concerned with a 14% rate…but Badler’s study of DSL hitters who’ve gone on to MLB success showed (if memory serves) a roughly 11-12% strikeout rate on average while toiling in their native country. So Jeimer is a bit above that threshold. (The aforementioned Arcia and Santana, by contrast, both whiffed in less than 8% of their plate appearances.)

Now, because J.C.‘s walk rate was terrific, it may just be that he’s already learning some mastery of what is and is not a strike, and we may well see fewer K’s this year, even against the tougher stateside pitching. Of course, if he merely maintains the 14%, that’d be more than fine and dandy if he keeps hitting for average with good pop.

Again, I have Candelario as borderline top 100 right now — but if his K rate were at Arcia/Santana levels, he’d be in the 70-80 range.

Couple of older pitchers I like as long shot sleepers for the A's

SP - T.J. Walz
Before the season I thought he had a chance to be this year’s version A.J. Griffin for the A’s after he dominated over-matched short season players last summer with good pitchability and below average raw stuff. He was draftred as a senior which makes him a bit old but the A’s started him in the Cal league and he’s off to a good start.

SP - Blake Treinen
Another senior draftee from last season he is actually a few months older than Walz but is more raw with some upside as he took some years off of pitching. He is also off to a pretty good start in the Cal league although his ERA isn’t as nice as Walz.

by OkayJay81 on May 4, 2025 4:48 PM EDT reply actions

not necessarily a sleeper but

I think Ryan Wheeler is the most undervalued prospect in the Dback organization.

by ScottAZ on May 4, 2025 5:04 PM EDT reply actions

Three FSL guys

Jimmy Nelson - didn’t rank highly on Brewers lists coming into the season, but currently off to a great start in the FSL, showing good command of two plus pitches.

Wilfredo Tovar - above average defensive SS has taken a big step forward with the bat, good approach, with a bit of gap power.

Rob Segedin - Yankees 2010 3rd rounder isn’t awful in RF, and shows a decent bat.

by acerimusdux on May 4, 2025 5:21 PM EDT reply actions

You might even be selling Tovar's glove short (pun intended!)

I wrote him off before this season because of black hole of offense but he’s looked good so far. Ceiling looks more like a better fielding Ruben Tejada.

by FrancoTAU on May 4, 2025 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I get a kick out of his last name.

Being Croatian descent and my dad’s side from the coastal region(Dalmatia), Tovar means donkey.

by hrv2010 on May 4, 2025 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Tovar

Yeah not that different from Tejada. I used to think he looked even smaller than Tejada, and worried he’d be overmatched by good pitching. But he really looks like he’s gotten stronger.

He always did show some contact ability though. I remember in 2007 when he first signed at 16, he caught my atttention in winter ball where he was hitting for average vs. much older players. He struggled a bit more in summer ball, but then hit the next year at 17 and made the jump to the US. At 18, he hit .265 in Brooklyn, .281 in Savannah, and .246 in St. Lucie, with pretty low strikeout rates. So while the overall numbers weren’t good, he was showing some contact ability for a guy being promoted that aggressively.

At this point, I would say he at least has a good shot to be a useful utility player. He plays good defense, and looks like he won’t be totally over-matched by good pitching.

My definition of Sleepers is not the same as Johns

Sticking with KC:

I definitely don’t think of Adam and Bonificio as “Sleepers”. They are top prospects. Not at the very top, but plenty close enough. D’ Andre Toney would qualify… someone mentioned Yordano Ventura, he also in my book is a bit too well known.

So, I nominate: Greg Billo, Daniel Mateo, Will Smith (close to being too known), Antonio Cruz, Justin Trapp and lets say, Patrick Leonard.

I don’t much about the guy personally, but KC signed him this offseason.and he is a former 2nd rnd Rangers pick from ’05 who still just turned 25 in Feb.

I found his #’s so far interesting: 81 AB, 12 Doubles, 4 Hr, 23 BB(!) , 27 K (ugh), .247/.410/.543

Another Vote For Cingrani

Drafted in Rd #3 but has put up some remarkable number last year and this season. Hard to ignore the sub-one era and K rate.

Evan Gattis

Of course, one could say he has awoken (or returned from the near dead). I’m excited to see if he can stay this hot in AA, learn to play LF and maybe move to the bigs in September or next year.

Sleepers

There are a lot of guys that I consider interesting guys to follow but when I think of sleepers I think of guys that you rarely if ever see any press on. As a big Cards prospect nerd I will name my favorite Cards sleepers. Few of those guys were named above in Anthony Garcia and Hector Hernandez…so I will skip naming them.

Justin Wright - LHP - Destined to be a LOOGY which is not sexy until you consider how often the Cards struggle to find a reliable LOOGY in the last few years. He is short in stature but he has a solid FB and breaking pitch.

Tommy Pham - OF - A guy that has gotten press in the past but can’t seem to stay health. Has the tools to be a solid avg OF if he can stay on the field. Nothing wrong with that.

Oscar Taveras - OF - OH WAIT!!! Got ya!

Chris Edmondson - OF - Something about this kid that I like though he is a little old for his level. He seems to have the ability to hit doubles and has some pop in his bat. And he seems to be clutch. Big fan.

Kevin Jacob - RHP - Has the ability to have closer ability and was a 31st Rd selection in the 2011 draft after injuries at GT killed his draft status. If he can rebound and clean his delivery up he has a chance.

There are others that I will at least mention but still a long ways off: Juan Castillo ©, Tyler Mills (RHP), Adam Ehrlich ©, Lance Jeffries (OF), CJ McElroy (OF) and Tyler Rahmatulla (2B)

couple of other guys I like

Sean Coyle, 2B, Red Sox - He’s gotten off to a slow start this year and needs to work on cutting the Ks, but draws walks and hits for power, all while providing a strong glove at 2B. Fast bat.

Kyle Heckathorn, RHP, Brewers - I took him in the 2009 Minor League Ball mock draft, so I’ll admit a bit of a fondness. Big body and decent stuff, doesn’t walk a lot of guys, strikeouts have crept up every year, keeps the ball on the ground. Steady progress up the ladder. Remains hittable and might be better suited in the long-run to play a useful role in the major league pen, but I think there’s a chance that he could surprise.

Evan Reed

Marlins pitcher in Double-A with great fastball velocity. I have heard great things about his start, and it’s starting to look like he could reach the potential we used to believe he had.

guys on my list

AJ Griffin, SP, A’s
Andrew Chafin, SP, Ari
Edwar Cabrera, SP, Col (old for AA though…kind of on the Juan Nicasio development plan, wouldn’t be surprised if he was called up late this year from AA)

Sean Doolittle, RP, A’s
Giovanni Soto, SP, Cle
Miles Head, 1B, A’s
Brad Miller, SS, Sea (kind of old for the CAL though)

"If you hit .440 with 20 bombs, you don't have to do s---. You don't have to bring a glove to practice, just hit and leave whenever you want. You can bring a 40 and smoke a cigarette and call me from the parking lot asking me what time the game is, and I'll tell you. You can even say 'F--- you, Steve!' Actually, don't say that, that wouldn't be very nice." -Steve Friend, Head Coach, Chabot College Gladiators Baseball
