what i'm watching for very closely to see how well they do:
Trevor Bauer will he dominate, really dominate?
Danny Hultzen will he keep going steady, stable?
Carlos Martinez -hmm will he walk the park?
Tyrell Jenkins - isn’t this like start #2 or #3? single A domination…
B.J. Hermsen - start #2 in the Eastern Lg. - how well will he do?
Taylor Jungmann - will he buckle under the pressure against C-Mart?
Robbie Erlin - FB/ GB ’ s….
Kyle Crick - just really good…..
and if Austin Winkler can rebound?
Also Graham Godfrey going, has been very good for the A’s…..will he get a promotion?

Is he just throwing fastballs
Working on fastball command and control?
by Jack203 on May 6, 2025 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions
No
he’s been mixing in his slider and changeup a bit. Been listening to most of the radio broadcasts. His changeup has been consistently getting hitters way out in front for swinging strike. Still leaving the fastball up. I know this will be viewed as blasphemy, but his stuff is so good his “floor” (let’s say 25% outcome?) is a mid-back end of the rotation starter who can innings. His ceiling is something else entirely if he can refine his command and learn to pitch (sequence pitches, change speeds/locations, etc) better.
by McCutchenIsTheTruth on May 7, 2025 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions
I assume you're ignoring injuries in that projection?
Otherwise, the sheer injury risks attributable to pitchers basically bring you to 25% before we think about lack of development

Some other stats
I’ve tracked all of Sanchez’s starts except for the first from the radio broadcasts, mostly out of fun but also to have some of the data that Gameday gives at the AA and AAA levels (pitch by pitch). Ive missed a few batters here and there, but it’s a substantially representative sample
SwSt rate: 11.1%
Contact rate: 71.5% (meaning batters miss 28.5% of the time when they swing)
First pitch strike: 60%…interesting split: 52% for first 8 innings tracked, 71% for most recent 8 innings. Maybe just SSS, maybe some improvement.
Average of around 14 pitches per inning…again a big split, almost 18 for the first 8 innings, less than 11 for the last 8 innings

Thanks for the report
Given your having seen him this spring, and on TV, any thoughts about the more power/more swing and miss? Change in approach in your mind to a ore aggressive hitter? Seems hard to explain otherwise given that his power is being complemented by more Ks.

by Woodland League on May 6, 2025 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions
It was a bomb...hugged the line, no doubt it was gone, just whether it would stay fair.
Myers’ strikeout rate this year doesn’t really bother me, last year against the same competition he struck out 87 times in 99 games. This year it’s 33/26 and he’s had two three K games one four, so more of an aberration than a trend, IMO.
I think this is basically an adjustment period because the Royals made some adjustments to his set-up..he stands really close to the plate and hits everything to right center, and pulls off-speed stuff and mistakes.
He had some difficulty in AA last year adjusting to fastballs inside, so during the AFL the Royals opened him up a little bit so he can better get to harder stuff inside.
I’m not concerned right now with his K rate.
by mlbprospectpulse on May 6, 2025 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I haven't had a chance to see Myers play
and it’s possible you have, so I’m just throwing this out there. Myers’ K/AB ratio last year wasn’t great (24.6%) but it wasn’t a killer. The thing is, he also didn’t hit all that well last year (.745 OPS, 104 wRC+). This year, he’s hitting the cover off the ball (1.056 and 193) but his K/AB rose to a more disconcerting (32%). Is there any concern that the adjustments he’s made (while providing better overall numbers) opened up a hole in his swing that pitchers are exploiting with more K’s? Again, I haven’t seem him, so I could be totally off, that was just a thought when I looked at his numbers…
by KentuckyPirate on May 6, 2025 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions
"Is there any concern that the adjustments he’s made (while providing better overall numbers) opened up a hole in his swing that pitchers are exploiting with more K’s?"
I don’t think so, not yet anyways.
He’s learning a new way to do something he’s been doing pretty well his whole life. It’s hard to stand in the batter’s box with a different approach and stance than you’ve had since you were six or seven.

Daniel Santana 5-5, 2B , SB (3)
Meet the Twins best Middle Infield prospect.
Rationale…With Dozier promoted to bigs, Rosario sucking at 2B and likely going back to CF/RF. and Levi Michael struggling as bad as a 1st round pick can struggle.
Danny Santana can play a good 2B, and a passable SS, maybe a 2B/3B type up the ladder.

Currently King batters at a 31.5% rate with the ML average being 19.1% (currently, per Fangraphs).
His walk rate is disturbingly high, and that might get exposed more against better competition. 7 wild pitches in 34 innings is a bit rough as well. Makes me wonder if he’s really wild or if he’s just got such movement that his catchers can’t keep up with it.

im of the belief
Bauer has ace upside and will turn into a #1 starter down the road… much like Johns opinion of him.
Bauer does have ace upside however with each passing start he has in AA im growing less and less impressed and its all due to his control. I expected so much more from the kid and that control is not the control i saw at UCLA last year.

I knew the analogy was a little pained
But my point was that glomming on to one blemish 40 innings into a guy’s professional career is a bad idea. Tim Lincecum walked too many guys in his first 40 pro innings too. Generally because he was equally unused to facing guys who could lay off pitches he’d been getting opponents to swing at for the previous six years of his life. Bauer’s a good enough student of the game and good enough pitcher that fretting obsessively about his walk totals so far.

I think he’ll adjust and be fine. I was speaking more generally about waiting too long to readjust one’s assessment of a player. It’s definitely too early to say “Bauer will always have control issues.”
by Woodland League on May 8, 2025 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions
How are Lincecum and Bauer's pro starts comparable?
Lincecum was already in the majors by the time he had thrown as many pro innings as Bauer has. Lincecum was walking under 3.2 per 9 in AAA (in the PCL no less) in his first full pro season. At the same point in his career, Bauer is still over 5.1 per 9 in AA. I’m not saying Bauer can’t figure things out with regards to his control and command, but comparing his struggles to Lincecum’s “struggles” is a tad ridiculous.
by nixa37 on May 8, 2025 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

walk rates are simply a proxy for major-league readiness…..that’s all
i wouldn’t call up Bauer to the majors right now, but i don’t think the walk rates have an impact on his long-term stock

Read what I responded to again
Did he say a word about age? No, he only talked about professional innings, didn’t he? BTW it’s 1.5 years and there is a reason very few people put all that much stock in pitcher ARL.
And walk rates are simply a proxy for MLB readiness, that’s all? What are you basing that on? I’d say it’s also a decent way to see that a guy has a problem with command and control. While that may mean he’s currently not MLB ready, it may also be an issue that will keep his stuff from ever playing like it should at the MLB level (cough…Daniel Cabrera).
by nixa37 on May 8, 2025 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions
sure
maybe they will never be ready because of the walk rates. that’s definitely possible for a number of prospects.
my point is more along the lines that as pitchers get older, walk rates naturally tend to get lower, because they refine their command and learn how to better control the zone. and if they don’t…well then they will probably never make the majors.
i’m not too worried about it until that point tho.
as for a proxy for MLB readiness…it’s just something i’ve noticed anecdotally. if you get a decent pitching prospects with great stuff but high walk rates, they tend to struggle a lot when they first come up to the majors. on the other hand, even when a prospect does not have great stuff, as long as they are able to limit walks, you can usually squeeze out a bunch of quality starts from them before they start getting shellacked.

To plunking him on purpose
I don’t necessarily agree, but MLB has come down hard on any pitcher that intentionally throws at a batter over the past 5 years. If they are to remain consistent, they should suspend Hamels for a start. Hamel should have kept his mouth shut, like all the other savvy pitchers that plunk someone on purpose. It’s part of the game, but the way the Commish has been managing the game, a one game suspension would be consistent since Hamel admitted it.

Had Hamels kept his mouth shut, there would be no penalty. He was dumb for admitting his intent, and he will likely pay a price.
IMO, Harper will get plunked 5-6 more times if he keeps up the stupid teenage kid act out on the field. Like it or not, MLB is still a game that centers around its tradition. If Harper cannot act like he has been there before, I can see more pitchers envisioning a big red X on his helmet.

I like the way he plays, but it’s going to catch up to him sooner or later.
He’s admitted to doing things which could be construed as show-boating which aren’t part of the play or the process for the simple reason to get attention.
As a matter of fact, if you saw the video after Ian Desmond’s walkoff the other day, you can actually see Jayson Werth pushing Harper out of the pile around the plate.

To address MLB’s comment above, he’s not the first rookie to want to jump in a big pile at home plate after being on base for a walk off HR. If he ran out of the dugout, maybe I could see Werth pushing him aside. Don’t forget Werth’s ego might be getting the best of him in his terrible run in DC thus far, and the push has less to do with Harper.

In case you haven't noticed, there is a huge resistance to anything new or nontraditional in baseball.
Yes, it is disgusting. The fact that a guy like Fernando Rodney gets disliked because of the way he wears his hat is baffling. The same can be said for Harper. He hustles and plays the game with a ton of energy. But talented superstars (He isn’t there yet, but will be) aren’t supposed to be the gritty little Jamie Carrolls and people get upset when they are. It is infuriating to see the resistance to change. The players playing against him should be mad…. at themselves. Why aren’t they running as hard as him? He plays the game with a football mentality, and it looks like a sect of baseball fans would prefer if baseball pretended it was an art form rather than a sport.
by mr. maniac on May 7, 2025 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes and No
I get what you’re saying, but it isn’t just the fact that Harper is uber-talented and still playing his ass off between the lines. When the ball is in play, Harper reminds me of Heyward to a certain extent. Both guys give every game everything they have and have incredibly high baseball IQs. They just seem to carry themselves a little differently the rest of the time and I think that’s what leads to Heyward getting embraced for his hustle while people react differently to Harper. The fact that Harper was on the cover of SI before he could buy a pack of cigarettes probably doesn’t help things either.

I’m not sure that makes it any better, right? MLB apparently doesn’t like its pitchers to be drilling hitters deliberately…I’m guessing this goes regardless of whether it’s a feud or just if someone lost a bar bet.
I’m also guessing they’ll be very anxious to keep top prospects from being hit proactively as part of any welcoming committee. Harper could well be the face of MLB for 15 years, not need to risk him getting all Dickie Thon’d.

I really think he just had a slow start, I love his tools and think he’s skilled enough to make good on them.

Anyone think
Hak-Ju Lee’s bat was over-hyped coming into this season? I know it’s early and he’s a glove first prospect but he seems like someone who could be in for a steep slide down most people’s rankings at mid-season. I had him outside of my top-50 and he’ll probably be toward the back of my top-100 now.
by sethbeno on May 6, 2025 11:53 PM EDT reply actions
if he's a glove-first prospect, then why would questions about his bat drive down his stock?
by mrkupe on May 6, 2025 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Glove only
is not really top 10-15 potential where a lot of sources (Law, BA) had him ranked. And while the glove is great, I don’t hear anyone calling him the next Rey Ordonez. Most reports I read suggested he will hit for a high average, post a great OBP, have teens HR power and steal 20-30 bases — and this combined with the glove justified the high ranking. I don’t have a problem with anyone defending this, and those projections may end up coming true but I’m just a little skeptical that he’ll end up being that productive at the plate and this slow start only reinforces my doubts.
by sethbeno on May 7, 2025 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions
Possibly because
some people thought he’d actually hit as well? Also, he put up an .826 OPS at Charlotte, so maybe people thought he would be a better hitter than he currently is.

Sort of like
thinking Paul Goldschmidt has any chance of being an above average starting first basemen in the major leagues.

Wow
I mean I thought Goldschmidt would eventually struggle once pitchers caught up, but god damn he sucks right now.

they've turned their attention Springfield way
by realitypolice on May 8, 2025 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions
he'll be fine
right now he’s just struggling against changeups
the k rates and bb rates are actually right around where i thought they would be….it’s the power that’s lacking. which is normal for a hitter trying to adjust their approach. once he feels more comfortable, the power will be back.
by blue bulldog on May 8, 2025 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions
Yes, I agree with this
All of this. Goldschmidt is still very inexperienced at this level (it’s easy to forget this when viewing him due to his overall poise) & it’ll come.
by Matt0330 on May 8, 2025 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions
That's always been the issue people have with Goldschmidt.
The idea is that his bat isn’t quick enough for major league pitching. If he has to start the bat early to hit major league fastballs, what happens when he gets a changeup? He’s way out in front. And that’s something that will only change if he can shorten his swing, not just through experience.
by PissedMick on May 8, 2025 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions
exactly
It’s entirely possible he shortens his swing and becomes a quality MLB player. Until then there will be a lot of swing and miss in his game.
by pedrophile on May 8, 2025 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions
it's not all physical
a lot of it is mental too
oftentimes, you can just deal with the problem by being smart about counts, and knowing which counts are changeup counts. combine that with pitcher tendencies…and that goes a long ways.
on top of that, the changeup is going to matter a lot more when he’s facing lefties (as his career numbers up to now have demonstrated). and the mass majority of starters he’ll face are righties. though of course….it’d be nice if he learned how to face the changeup and hit lefties the way he used to in the minors lol.
i dunno. it’s possible he never becomes a 2 WAR 1B. but i don’t want to throw away that possibility until i see him battle through this full year. it’s very normal for sophomores to slump regardless, as pitchers figure them out. up to Goldy now to learn how to adjust. and again, the biggest concern i had for him going into the year was the strikeout rate. if he can keep that around 25% i think he’ll be a satisfactory 1B.
by blue bulldog on May 8, 2025 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions
He's coming around
He’s played pretty well the past week or so and the quality of his plate appearances by & large, in my opinion, are improving. He’s underrated defensively too. I’m not concerned really & still think he has the makings of a major league contributor & probable regular. I doubt this one was intended for me as I typically don’t ‘lambast’, but figured I’d check in just in case.
by Matt0330 on May 8, 2025 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions
While I did sort of think mentioning his name might summon you in much the same manner as saying “Beetlejuice,” I definitely don’t think you fall into the categorization by pedrophile.
I do, however, think you’re entirely wrong about Goldschmidt’s future.
by realitypolice on May 8, 2025 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions
Michael Keaton
Underrated, sneaky comic actor. I always felt it was strange how he pretty much fell off the map & never did much of consequence after the second Batm..following the original Batman. Beetlejuice was sort of silly to me & a little light overall, but Gung Ho, Johnny Dangerously, Night Shift, Mr. Mom. etc - good stuff.
We’ll see on Goldschmidt. I see him a lot (on TV) & I think bb’s answer above is feasible & dead on.
by Matt0330 on May 8, 2025 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions
Beetlejuice was “sort of silly” but Gung Ho wasn’t? Oh my!
Now, Dream Team, that’s another story!
by realitypolice on May 8, 2025 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Different strokes for different folks
Different kinds of ‘silly’, I guess. Gung Ho was more of a well rounded movie (to me - just an opinion) & less dependent on special effects gags, etc, although it is probably a little dated considering the whole Japan/auto industry stuff. I haven’t seen it in awhile. I’m pretty sure the guy who played Long Duck Dong was his foil in the film, so that already trumps Catherine O’Hara’s weird hats to me.
Basically, I’m surprised that Keaton with his quirkiness, acting chops & understated good looks (so I read..) didn’t become a bigger mainstream star as all the signs were there. Wait, are we talking about actors or baseball players?
by Matt0330 on May 8, 2025 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions
I think the downturn in Keaton’s career can be pinpointed to that stretch in the late 90s when he made a string of REALLY crappy movies. He even made Robert Duval suck in that awful Scottish soccer movie.
by realitypolice on May 8, 2025 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions
"didn’t become a bigger mainstream star"
Well, he was Batman for a second. He and Burton had a pretty good thing before Depp stole the director’s heart. I do admit that seeing everyone’s favorite John Hughes exchange student in an adult role was nice. Maybe Keaton’s slide can be traced to a steady stream of dramas (Clean & Sober, My Life)?
by charles wallace on May 8, 2025 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions
I think you both nailed it
Some of those acting choices for Keaton can almost be viewed as sort of a less successful (albeit concurrent I suppose?) attempt at Tom Hanks’ career in retrospect but he did walk away from the Batman franchise at the right time artistically speaking (although that George Clooney guy has done alright for himself) so at least that garners him some cred. I could be looking into it too much though (anything’s possible).
I always liked the guy. He had a smallish role in the underrated Jackie Brown & Multiplicity was pretty good as far as that type of movie goes also. Rp is right though - a ton of less than stellar choices in the 1990s. My Life is the one with Nicole Kidman? Oy gevalt.
by Matt0330 on May 8, 2025 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions
He was good in Jackie Brown,
but shoot, who wasn’t? And yes, My life is the one with Nicole Kidman where he’s dying from cancer while she’s pregnant wiht their child. As a new father that one is actually pretty shattering, though I’m sure my younger, more cyncial self, would have dismissed it.
I haven’t watched the Burton Batman’s but those made between then and the Nolan Dark Knights, yeah, that would be an artisitc nadir…
Multiplicity inevitably suffered from being inferior to the other high concept gimmick-stretcher Ramis helmed, Groundhog Day. Talk about questionable films to have a soft spot for: those movies sandwich Stuart Saves His Family in the Ramis canon. Unjustly maligned (probably not)!

On the year: .300/.360/.440 (.324/.398/.486 from the left). 8.6% walk rate, and a 12.9% K rate. If he can stick at SS, that’s shaping up to be a nice bat. Good to see him bounce back.

Couldn't pass this up
Shock of all shocks, I like Adams. I don’t think he’s got Goldschmidt’s pure power (have only seen him in Spring Training action on TV) & he looks like something of a (less than svelte) 3-4 DE compared to Goldschmidt’s ILB build, but he can hit. The St. Louis system might be the strongest in the minors right now (or at least they’re in the conversation).
by Matt0330 on May 8, 2025 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions
Goldy vs. Adams
The swings are pretty different, but you’re right, Goldschmidt looks like Mr. Universe next to Adams. I’m not sure how to comp the power. I’ll get creamed for it one of these days, but Adams’ swing reminds me of where Jay Bruce’s was as recently as last year. Fairly short, natural loft and easy power, susceptible to stuff down and away. Bruce is doing a better job of laying off pitches out of the zone and that’s an adjustment Adams will have to make. Obviously we need to see Adams in MLB games to gauge. I’ve probably seen the same video/handful of ST PAs you have. If you saw the ABs against Teheran then you know that the changeup just tied him in knots.
I was really surprised toward the end of last season how impressed I was by the STL system was. They kind of snuck up on me.

Last Friday. Of course, I was a few dozen drinks in. He made solid hard contact in every at-bat that day and (I think) went 3/4. Made me think a little bit of a LH Billy Butler…
