9-4 GO-AO
Nice outing. The 2 HRs are to be expected from a 21 year old. But he sat 91-93 in the first 3 innings, looked like he tired a bit as the game wore on, sitting 89-91. Threw a lot of 87-88 mph cutters in the early part of the game, went more to the 4 seamer later. Didn’t throw a lot of change ups from what I could see.

What caught my eye about Green is that his K-rate has been steadily creeping down this year
The last two years he’s been at about 20%, after 32 games this season it’s down to 16.5%. It’s still a small sample but for a guy who’s value is largely dependent on batting average it would be nice if he could make more consistent contact.
I’ve been down on Green since his move to the outfield, and while I’m still skeptical, a legitimate improvement in making contact would help his chances on being a decent starter.
by OkayJay81 on May 15, 2025 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions
why would you have been down on him for moving to the OF?
He was never going to play shortstop at the major league level. If anything the move improved his prospect standing, because he now has a position he can play.

Moving to the outfield just signified that it was official he couldn't hang at SS
When he was drafted scouts seemed pretty split on whether he could stick at SS. Even after his error filled first season I was hoping that steady work with pro coaches could at least get him up to playable there.
Once it was official he was an outfielder I was doubtful that his bat would play out there.
by OkayJay81 on May 15, 2025 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions
many players in the minors play positions they have no business playing at the ML level
Was sticking at SS really a matter of range or hands? He has been struggling with arm strength, something that I suspect was at least partially owed to trying to stay lean to stick in the middle infield. Back in HS he was projected to fill out and move to 3B, and arm never seemed to come up as an issue until the last couple of years. Last year, he was really having to heave himself into his throws to get any kind of carry.

it wasn't range, hands, or arm
it was his foot positioning (which lead to throwing accuracy troubles) on the routine plays.

there were definitely concerns about his arm strength
If it was a matter of footwork, I’d have to believe that he’d still be at shortstop as that is fixable and one of the last things to come for most shortstops.

Would a foul tip that is held onto by the catcher be most properly classified a swinging strike or a foul tip. Is the answer different for the 1st or 2nd strike versus the third strike, which of course would be a K.

I don't know how you interpret that way.
He didn’t just strike out, stand there or maybe walk back, and throw his helmet on the ground only to see it take a bad bounce and hit the ump.
No, he went after the ump and threw it at him. It had to take a bad bounce not to hit the ump.
by mr. maniac on May 15, 2025 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm saying that it's an abnormally shaped object
And that abnormally shaped objects can bounce in very unpredictable ways. It could very well have bounced in a completely difference direction, and it wouldn’t be a story
Note: This is not to absolve what Lawrie did in the least. It was wrong, dumb, stupid, no excuses. He’ll get suspended, and it will be a completely legitimate consequence of what he did
by MjwW on May 15, 2025 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Um,
he turned and threw the helmet on a direct line. I guess it’s a testament that he could make an abnormally shaped object bounce on such a perfect line? lol
Even without the helmet, Lawrie was enraged to a completely absurd degree. Here’s hoping he watches the video, sees how unacceptable the entire thing was, and keeps his temper going forward. Joey Votto got throw out of two games in a two week period for arguing strikes and balls too vociferously a couple of seasons ago, and that was the last of that. Those were bad calls too.
by charles wallace on May 15, 2025 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions
To second part
I’m not disputing any of that. As I said, dumb, stupid, pick your adverbs and adjectives of choice.
To the first part, all I’m saying is, if the helmet impacts the ground in a different way, it bounces at a different angle, and possibly avoids the umpire altogether, in which case I doubt he gets suspended. Again, that’s not to absolve Lawrie of any responsibility.

Not to belabor the point
but I’ve watched this a couple more times, and he throws the helmet right at the umpire’s feet. Even if it hadn’t hit him I suspect he’d be looking at a fine and/or suspension. The video does a nice job of showing how bad the strike calls were. Still, you throw a helmet within two feet of an ump like that and you’re in trouble.

I guess here's what I'm saying
It was a really bad process, and ended up with a really bad result. Karma at its finest. But sometimes, bad processes still end with good or neutral outcomes (John Farrell bats Adam Lind clean-up against a lefty and Lind hits a HR or doesn’t go 0-4, 3K). And sometimes good processes nonetheless results in a bad outcome (swing a 3-1 meatball, just miss it, and it ends up an out).
by MjwW on May 16, 2025 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions
It was brutal even if it didn't hit the umpire. He should get at least 10 games, probably more.
I do have a question about the umpire though. If an ump makes consecutive bad calls it’s one thing. But was that ump purposefully jobbing Lawrie? It appeared that way to me.
by pedrophile on May 16, 2025 2:00 AM EDT up reply actions
No suspension
Simply because throwing a plastic helmet at someone’s feet isn’t all that dangerous, and since drinking and driving is 0 games, Lawrie should really be given the chance to play an extra 10 games.
by Cashews! on May 16, 2025 2:04 AM EDT up reply actions
It definitely seemed to me
that the ump took umbrage to Lawrie jogging to first on the called strike before - when Lawrie thought it was ball 4. The ump looked a little emphatic calling that 3rd strike, which was clearly a ball. And when Lawrie got in his face, he seemed to want to get into it with him. At the very least, I think the ump should also be watched closely for a.) poor strike zone judgement, and b.) possibly letting a pretty common reaction (starting to run to first on a perceived ball four) prejudice and widen his view of the strike zone in a revenge manner on the next pitch. The game at this level has no room for spiteful umps.
by Woodland League on May 16, 2025 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions
What? Some of those crappy excuses on BBB are pretty hilarious. This is one of them.
So he turns, takes a DIRECT angle towards the ump, throws it at this same angle right near the umps feet, and it bounces like it should. So he was expecting it to take a horrible bounce.
You must think Lawrie is one of the dumbest players in baseball who has never touched a basketball or learned any type of physics before.
And then, when it “accidentally” hit the ump, Lawrie calmed down and apologized, right? Or he at least acted shocked, right? Nope. Not a single look of surprise on his face as he charged him, spit flying in his face, before being forcefully restrained by his manager.

So he was expecting it to take a horrible bounce.
He wasn’t expecting anything. He was out of control, and that’s inexcusable is I’ve maintained above. But I don’t believe there was any intent to hit the ump, throwing the helmet was a purely emotional reaction.
As for the last part, I’m glad that you’re so level headed that you’ve never had a moment where you got upset enough to lose control. Cause expecting him to instantaneously calm down is unrealistic. Again, not that that excuses being out of control initially.

He def. did not throw it AT the umpire
he slammed it down, he deserves a suspension, but really its already been severely blown out of proportion, it bounces and grazed the umps leg, he did not throw it at him, he threw it at the groung in a fit of rage and AGAIN I Agree he should be suspended but those were TWO awful calls made purely out of spite and delusion of granduer, and there are way too many umps like that…The ump felt his power was being questioned by some young punk, I never understood calling a strike if batter takes off before the call and this was clearly the case, both calls were laughable and made only bc the ump felt slighted, I really hate confrontational umps and I think the ump gets off lightly as everyone over reacts to Lawrie, 9th inning 1 run game and ump takes game into his own hands, he should be suspended too, and I do expect MLB to over react, prheaps 25game or something similarily ridiculous, Hamels gets basically nothing for drilling a guy w/ a harball at 90 mph in the back, drunk driving, wife beating common occurances for similary short fused hard partyin athletes is fine but grace a combative ump w/ a helmet and we need to drop the hammer and teach lessons….

Wild game at High Desert
That’s after just 3 innings. And it’s off David Holmberg.
His team is losing 5-15 though…

There is a ton of wind at the game, and everything is flying out of the ballpark…

Yeah... It's 22-5 now
Some fun stats though…
Chris Young who is rehabbing with Visalia has 4 at-bats after 3 innings!
The Visalia 1B Jonathan Griffin is 4 for 4 with 2 homers and a triple and 5 RBis in the 4th…

Dont look now but he’s hitting .326/.386/.522. Having his best year he’s ever had in the minors and lets not forget he’s younger than guys like Jennings and D-Brown. Really hope Houston gives him a LONG look.

Unfortunately
The Astros continue to be enamored with Brian “Look our 2005 first round pick isn’t a total failure” Bogusevic in RF. Very glad they scooped Martinez up though, he could be their first DH.

To give you guys an idea (sorry, don't want to hijack the thread) of the strike zone on the day, here is a graph.

So one of the pitches caught the zone, and the other one wasn’t even the furthest ball outside called a strike.
Here is a question. If the same thing happened to Harper, would he do the same? I would hope not. Both play the game hard, and I hope Harper is able to keep his cool better. With all the media fixated on him, it only takes one stupid incident to ruin Harper’s image.
by mr. maniac on May 16, 2025 9:01 AM EDT reply actions
Sorry if I didn't read correctly
but the top graph is the at bat where Lawrie ended up getting ejected? And the bottom one is? Sorry for the dumb questions probably.
by Woodland League on May 16, 2025 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions
Bottom is all pitches that the home plate umpire called last night
The green ones he called balls and the red ones he called strikes.
by nixa37 on May 16, 2025 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions
That's kind what I thought
Thanks. Just seemed like too few for 9 innings and two teams, but I guess once you get rid of foul balls, tips, balls in play, etc…
by Woodland League on May 16, 2025 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions
What does Harper have to do with this?
Also, that’s not the actual strike zone, it’s an approximation. You can’t use that to say whether that 6th pitch was a ball or strike (not that it really matters in the grand scheme)
by MjwW on May 16, 2025 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions
Remember that umps are more accurate for high/low calls than pitch f/x
I know that’s the reason Mike Fast has cited for his opposition to pitch f/x replacing human umps. I think the third strike would mostly be a non-issue as far as bad calls go if it weren’t for the pitch immediately prior.
by nixa37 on May 16, 2025 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions
Right
But that’s my entire point. The reason they’re less accurate is that the strike zone doesn’t have an explicit high/low zone - it’s in reference to the player itself and changes.
If you look at the above, it’s just setting it generically as 1.5 feet to 3.5 feet. Which is not what the actual zone is, and so you can’t say “it’s right there, it’s a strike or a ball or borderline”. Whereas on inside/outside, there’s an unchanged explicit reference point, the plate
by MjwW on May 16, 2025 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions
It goes beyond just the lack of an explicit high/low cutoff point
You also have issues related to what the actual height of the ball was when it crosses the plate. Because pitches are accelerating downward more rapidly than they accelerate side to side (because of gravity) the lack of an exact defined moment when the pitch crosses the plate causes greater issues with high/low calls as well.
I don’t know about other people, but I personally like the human element on ball/strike calls because of the importance it places on the catcher and his ability to “frame” pitches (though it appears it may have less to do with framing than not noticeably moving when catching the ball).
by nixa37 on May 16, 2025 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions
Interesting
I was not aware of all of the stuff in your first paragraph.
I do not like the human element on ball/strike calls, however, especially since it usually manifests itself in the form of umpires who have their own definition of the strike zone rather than the rulebook definition. I accept humans will make mistakes, though some more frequently and egregiously than others, but there are too many umpires who think they get to make up the rule book (on balls/strikes) rather than applying it
by MjwW on May 16, 2025 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions
But several have been saying that the sixth pitch was a ball, yet you say that it isn't accurate.
Who should we trust than?An ump, who called it a strike?
by mr. maniac on May 16, 2025 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions
How is it not the furthest ball outside called a strike?
by pedrophile on May 16, 2025 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, I don't seem to see the two pitches in question on the first graph
I only saw the at bat over reply once, but it looked like the final strike was high and outside. But maybe just high?
by Woodland League on May 16, 2025 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions
It was just high.
Look at the replay, as it was really close.
by mr. maniac on May 16, 2025 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Thanks
I was looking at the first graph from he pitcher’s perspective, so it looked like it would have been high and inside, which I knew wasn’t right from watching the video. Got it now though. Umpire’s perspective.
by Woodland League on May 16, 2025 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions
The Last Pitch
Was definitely out of the strikezone. As was noted above, the 1.5 ft - 3.5 feet is just an approximate estimate of the height of the strikezone. Lawrie is 6’0 so a pitch that is 43 inches off the ground is probably in the neighborhood of 6 inches above his waste. Add in the perceived benefit that most players get by crouching down a few inches and it’s definitely a pitch that’s called high the vast majority of the time.
by Dfarth on May 16, 2025 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Not to mention
Look at that pitch graph from Rodney - there’s no sign of control at all. It’s an awful pitching performance. I don’t know how you give the benefit of the doubt to the pitcher on that last call when he’s shown no signs of control the entire AB.
by Woodland League on May 16, 2025 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions
This is some of the dumbest stuff I have read yet.
Did you watch the inning? Rodney wasn’t a control artist, but he knew what he was doing.
by mr. maniac on May 16, 2025 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions
I didn't watch the inning
But based on that AB alone, and the pitch chart, I don’t know how you can say he knew what he was doing. Especially when he left a full count change up just high of the zone??
by Woodland League on May 16, 2025 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions
your chart of Lawrie’s AB is full of errant points btw. You should ask that it be deleted it and repost the correct one (which is below).
3-2 change high in the zone….he knew what he was doing…lol.
by Woodland League on May 16, 2025 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions
If you watch the video
of the second strike call (the one way outside), after Lawrie starts to run to first he turns around and walks back. He’s pretty annoyed. A lot of players do this, even if it shows up the ump a little bit. Bad on Lawrie, but it’s not uncommon. What’s interesting is when Lawrie is picking up his bat, he avoids looking at the ump. But then the ump walks over home plate and Lawrie shoots a look over his way, like the ump just said something, maybe directed at him. The ump then says something out to the pitcher. I wonder what he said that made Lawrie look in his direction and if it was related to the previous pitch.

I'm not sure how to post a pic
that’s just on your desktop, but here’s the link to the gameday classic version on mlb.com. You can find Lawrie’s AB in the 9th. That diagram of the AB looks even worse.

Right, but gameday isn't normalized
Pitch f/x is far from perfect in its raw form. You should probably be trusting the normalized stuff above over what you see on gameday.

oh wow
way ahead of me. I’d love to hear an explanation at some point in the future since it sounds interesting. But for now I’ll just ignore what I think I know and defer to you. :)
by Woodland League on May 16, 2025 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions
It should be noted that the top of the box is always 3.5' above the plate.
It’s a rough average for strikezone height. It has no relation to Lawrie’s strikezone, and shouldn’t be taken as such.
by PissedMick on May 16, 2025 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions
I was going to say...
That last strike looked a lot higher than “just out of the zone.”
by asyouwish33 on May 16, 2025 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions
That's because of the movement in Lawrie upper body as he tracked the pitch
His upper body shifts down considerably by the time the ball is crossing the plate, but that has no effect on the upper bound of the strike zone. If you actually just watch the catcher’s glove in relation to Lawrie body, he catches the ball just about belt high (which obviously means it crossed higher than that, but not nearly as high as you seem to think).
