Time for speculation

I think this move makes it highly probable that Bauer will be called up some time this year. There’s not much reason to leave him in Reno and the PCL for more than half a season.

Will be interesting to see how he does when facing batters with major league experience

More than a few people thought he had a small chance to make the rotation out of spring, he certainly is better than corbin or whomever is occupying the back of their rotation…in the very least he should be up right after they get past his super2 date.

by delmonfan on May 17, 2025 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Nah

Don’t get me wrong. I’d love to say yes. But he doesn’t quite have the stuff. Fastball 2-3 mph slower than a lot of those guys. Curve is way behind, but maybe getting better. Change is really good, maybe better than most of those guys.

The thing is, those guys, with the exception of Bauer, are 2 years younger. They are pretty special talents.

For me, I like to compare Barnes’ year so far with Bauer, Hultzen and Cole. That’s a pretty interesting group to follow. But distinctly different than the younger guys.

Two fun groups of pitchers that I like watching this year:
Cole, Bauer, Hultzen and Barnes
And
Bundy, Bradley, Fernandez and Taillon

If he’s gone up a couple of ticks, that would help explain his dominance. I thought he was sitting around 92-93 coming out of college.

by MjwW on May 17, 2025 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

DeSclafani

Is he still getting talked up as a potential reliever, or is there thinking that he can start. That gun is probably hot, but Syndergaard is legit 92-95 in starts this year, right? That kid defines easy gas.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6MssIH9mbU

by charles wallace on May 17, 2025 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Syndergaard sits a legit 92-95, yeah, and that’s from reports independent of the Lansing gun (see here for example)

On DeSclafani, the Jays modus operendi is basically to have guys start and keep them there as long as they succeed, even if they’re seen as relievers. They sent Carreno down to AAA at the beginning of the year to have him start, have Wojo starting, Stilson starting, DeSclafani, and Sam Dyson (who began the year starting in Dunedin, was promoted to AA about 10 days ago and is now relieving).

From what I’ve heard, he’s most likely a reliever down the road. Anecdotally, listening to his starts this year, he seems to get better results the first time through. Hard to tell for sure unless they let him go to 5-6 innings later this year, and he consistently has to turn a line-up over multiple times

by MjwW on May 17, 2025 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Also

Jays have had some success turning college relievers into starters - Marcus, Cecil - so who knows. It was a different regime, but AA was part of that regime

I think “Pat Hentgen, roving pitching instructor” is the best thing I’ve read all day. Used to love that guy, and I’m glad he’s still with the org. Now if they could find a spot for Duane Ward…

by charles wallace on May 17, 2025 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Hentgen

He was actually the bullpen coach last year, I think his daughters are high school age so he found all the travel and being away from the family a bit much for the near future. I too am glad he’s still coaching within the org, and wouldn’t be surprised to see him back as a full-time coach at some point.

I had read that article before, but had skimmed over the blurb at the beginning in favour of the individual player info. I think it’s interesting they have a “quality at-bats instructor”. Don’t think I’ve ever heard that title before.

He's rebounded well

in the past year or so. He struggled a bit in 2010, slowing down some of the steam he was building up as a pen arm. That said, solid year last year and still has good velo on the fastball (tops out mid-90’s) with a good slider. I don’t really think of him as a late inning type, I guess. More middle relief/borderline setup.

#6 on the BA hot sheet

Interesting note that Wilmington is a nice pitchers park, but 6 of his 8 starts have come on the road for a 1.95 ERA.

I also got this nugget from an industry source: “Oscar Taveras is a future batting champion; best pure bat in the minors. 80 all the way.”

That's merely his power grade

They actually made exception for him — his bat is a 90

Old news

He was a great pure hitter, who hit for power, last year. Anyways…

He was supposed to have the night off last night but, came off the bench to single in two in a six-run ninth. Hitting .318
