Wilmer Font is alive

In his last 3 starts (including tonight: 5IP, 3H, 1R, 5K, 0BB) he has pitched 13.2 innings, allowed 5 hits and 3 runs, struck out 17 and walked only 1.

That is a 36.2 K%, 2.1 BB%, 1.98 ERA, 0.44 WHIP.

As a Marlins prospect writer...

I’ve been hearing some very good things about Keys. He has plus speed and his defense has improved. He’s made great strides since the 2009 draft, but this is the first year where scouts are starting to believe in his potential. Stay tuned, next Wednesday I will have an in-depth analysis of Brent Keys up on Fish Stripes, the Marlins SB Nation website.

Pitching matchup of the year tomorrow

Trevor Bauer v Danny Hultzen.

.

by mlbprospectpulse on May 16, 2025 10:36 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Bundy & Barnes

might argue that one.

by gghulsebus on May 16, 2025 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Definitely not the pitching matchup of the year.

A) I assume you mean minor league pitching matchup of the year, but if you mean in all of baseball, there are much better matchups every week in the majors.
B) Hultzen has been pretty bad this season. 5.50 BB/9. Reports have been extremely disappointing and not what you want to hear about the #2 pick.
C) Bauer has been pretty good, but he’s not the best pitching prospect in the minors.
My point is, this will be a tremendous pitching matchup but that doesn’t require a statement about how it’s the best of the year. For example, Bundy and Barnes as gghulsebus said. Or whenever Bundy faces Jose Fernandez. I’m not sure what you mean by this comment. Do you mean it might be the pitching matchup of the year from a scouting standpoint? Or in terms of how well each pitcher will pitch?

Twitter:@RJA206

by SamEvans on May 16, 2025 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Nothing against you Sam

. . . but, this is not one of the best comments of the year, in my opinion. If Bauer facing Hulten is a “tremendous matchup” then why all the analysis over whether it is the “best” one?
It’s kind of a subjective assertion anyways.

That said, I disagree on nearly all the points used to refute

Hulten has been closer to excellent than bad - only if one fixates on the walks and ignores every other pitching number. It’s bizarre to suggest he’s been bad.

It’s the number 2 pick from last years draft versus, the number 3 pick.

One guy is 7-1 with a 1.68 ERA, with twice as many Ks as hits

The other is 3 - 3 with a 1.91 with twice as many Ks as hits.

They have combined to allow 2 homers in more than 85 innings.

I think you are REALLY overthinking things here Sam.

by casejud on May 16, 2025 11:51 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions   3 recs

I agree kind of.

I definitely was overthinking things. However, I still don’t think this is the best pitching matchup of the year. I’m not saying that Hultzen has been bad, but he hasn’t performed how a #2 pick is supposed to. I don’t really care whether or not this is the best pitching matchup of the year, but I’m tired of people making that argument in early-May. How about we wait until the end of the year before we decide what was the best pitching matchup of the year?

I was unaware that there was a "recommended level of performance in the minors by slot"

Expectations of future major league performance might be a different story.

So...

You’re making the assumption that Hultzen has been sub par through early May, when we are still in SSS territory, but then go on to say we should wait until the end of the year to draw conclusions?

Don't ignore the fact that Hultzen started his professional career at AA.

Maybe you prefer Cole’s walk rate, but Cole is doing it at A+. Barnes has put up most of his numbers two levels below where Hultzen started his career. Context is important.

by PissedMick on May 17, 2025 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

that is/are just his source(s) talking

There are a lot more scouts in the world, or even in just the Southern League, than there are scouts who talk to Kevin Goldstein. And some of those scouts have an interest in trying to portray Hultzen as “disappointing”.

I’m sure you’ll find some scouts who are quite pleased with Hultzen so far. Just a matter of whose opinion is getting reported . . .

I see what you're saying

but it’s not just Goldstein.
Larry Stone (who saw Hultzen in person)
Some scouts might be pleased with Hultzen, but in their own context. Nobody thinks he can’t be an effective MLB starter anymore, but opinions of whether he is a future #2 or #3 have varied greatly since the start of the season.

Twitter:@RJA206

by SamEvans on May 17, 2025 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

So we have

a tweet and a story (Stone) that seems more to speak to a guy gutting out a game without his best stuff than a “disappointment”. Opinions on his future rotation slot have varied since he became a first round lock last year, not the start of the season.

by charles wallace on May 17, 2025 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe disappointment was the wrong choice of words.

The numbers look great, but there is a lot behind the numbers that is even more important for determining his future success. Opinions on his future rotation slot have varied since forever, but never as much as they have this year.

This reminds me of my theory

that no one will care about.

Can you imagine how nasty we could be at soccer if our elite athletes played that sport instead of basketball/football.

Just kinda randomly choosing. Imagine playing a standard 4-4-2.

Goalie - Dwight Howard
Defensive Mids - Lebron James, Julius Peppers
Cornerbacks - Troy Polamalu, heck, lets pick a baseball player, Mike Trout
Wingers - Chris Johnson, DeSean Jackson
Midfielders - Kobe Bryant and Andrew Luck
Forwards - Russel Westbrook and Derrick Rose

Good freakin game.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on May 17, 2025 4:49 AM EDT up reply actions

With a limited knowledge on soccer to pull from...

Goalie - Serge Ibaka (holy CRAP last night)
DM - Ray Lewis, Ndomakung Suh (who’s running into our D, really?)
CB - Metta World Peace, Troy Polamalu (enforcers)
Wings - Billy Hamilton, Chris Johnson (elite speed group)
Midfielders - LeBron James, Calvin Johnson (athletes galore)
Forwards - Derrick Rose, Mike Trout (skills and speed)

Honorable Mentions (bench players):
Julius Peppers, Brian Urlacher, Kobe Bryant, Anthony Davis (goalie), James Harrison (our real enforcer), Jonathan Vilma (head of the locker room if you know what I mean), Robinson Cano, Michael Bourn

Head Coach: Gregg Popovich
Offense: Bill Belichick
Defense: Tony La Russa (out of retirement)

Seriously, who’s gonna beat this group?

Pretty much any futbal team from anywhere

over the age of 14. It has MUCH MORE to do with skill than you want to admit. It’s like saying that Bolt would be an awesome WR b/c he runs fast.

by JoelGuzman'sScout on May 17, 2025 7:12 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Obviously he means if they grew up playing soccer instead of their respective sports.

Nobody thinks you can step on a soccer field and dominate just because you’re fast and coordinated.

by PissedMick on May 17, 2025 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions

+1

It would be really interesting. Soccer does require a lot of skill, but if they put as much time into it as their respective sports, I’m sure they would have some degree of success.

by mr. maniac on May 17, 2025 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Like it was said

Soccer takes practice and practice and more practice just like every sport. But imagine if our best athletes (like other countries’ best) grew up playing soccer. Imagine if LeBron was playing soccer, how difficult it’d be to head it over a guy who’d head can get 10+ feet in the air. We’d be legit, but we diversify our sports.

by kicker31 on May 17, 2025 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Stick to baseball, Pedro

for a big man and a go-to scorer, LeBron racks up a significant number of assists. Almost seven a game for his career.

Seems like he much prefers to pass the rock late in the 4th q rather than take the shot.

by St.Steve on May 18, 2025 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

how many of those passes come from his feet?

BTW - do you, or others, really think that if stars like LeBron (or others) focused on soccer they would be equally as successful in soccer?

I agree that the USA would have a much better team if soccer was a more popular, read: lucrative, sport. But I imagine many of the stars in soccer would likely be players that are only ok in other sports. For example: I’m sure there are many SS or 2B in baseball that never made MLB because they didn’t have the bat to complement their defensive skills. Some of these would have IMO turned out to be very good soccer players.

Many of the stars in sports like basketball just aren’t a match for soccer. How many 6’8 soccer players exist? I wouldn’t say none of them could make it. But I think it’s more marginal players that would be the stars.

by pedrophile on May 18, 2025 2:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I would bet you're exactly right about the type of players that would cross over well.

I’d probably look for smaller, quicker guys with good defense and coordination. Utley, Pedroia, Brendan Ryan, Dee Gordon.

by PissedMick on May 18, 2025 8:11 AM EDT up reply actions

yes but those are body types that are found in most of soccer

i think the original argument was that we could field a ridiculous team [both size and speed unseen in the sport] if our country’s prime sport was soccer rather than mlb/nba/nfl.

i’m sure some would’ve been good at it, but who’s to say how good.

look at Jordan and his baseball experiment. extreme aptitude/skill doesn’t always translate

Yeah I sort of agree. Given the context of the situation, Jordan’s performance really wasn’t that bad. I’m certainly not suggesting he was ever going to find success (i.e. have a positive contribution at the MLB level), but I think he did WAY better than the vast majority of former ball players would have done. Baseball really isn’t the kind of sport you can just dust off once every other decade and expect to excel at.

by jfish26101 on May 18, 2025 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

how much better do you think he would've gotten?

we are talking about the greatest / most popular athlete in the world. putting up a very below average line in AA. i know he hadn’t played in a while, but come on, its not that great.
