Question...

I’ve always wondered about deals like this for Chapman and Cesepedes and Soler eventually.

Let’s say they get 6 mil a year for 6 years. Are they getting paid this while they are still in the minors? Or does the team still have 5 years of MILB control and then 6 years of MLB control until they hit free agency again?

contracts

The player is signed to a major league deal, so the player has 3 minor league options. The player is already on the 40 man, so I guess you could interpret that as “losing” the years before a team has to make a decision on adding the player to that roster.

As for the other part of what you asked, yes they receive that pay while they’re in the minors. The team also retains the player’s rights for 6 years of MLB service time the same as any other player. In the event that a player were to sign, say, a 5 year contract that would expire prior to the player having accumulated enough time for free agency, the player ends up being eligible for arbitration. Since IFAs typically sign contracts that are much greater in value than their American counterparts of the same age/experience level, they usually stand to make out pretty well in the arbitration process.

Actually, 4 options.

The 4 options are for if the big league deal is signed before the player reaches AA. We endured 4 horrible years with Jeff Samardzija. When we couldn’t send him back (or trade him, as he had a NTC as well), he finally became good enough. Now, he’s one of the few guys on the team worth watching.

Soler would get 4 options (with a big league deal). Presumably, one would be burnt immediately as he goes to the minors right away.

10-25-2011. Theo Epstein joins the Cubs. Now, the fun begins.
