I'm not an expert

But, Cody Hebner, Duanel Jones and Burch Smith stand out as not belonging. Alberth Martinez seems too far away and I’m not sure whatever ceiling he has justifies his inclusion. Not sure who would be the next one off if I’m cutting 6.

I'd be interesting in hearing something about Matt Stites

Good numbers, but don’t know much about how he went about getting them.

I'm the man to help you John.

Hebner, and Burch seem like 2 easy cuts.

Medica is another cut for me. So is Valdez but I understand if I’m alone on Valdez.

I agree with you on keeping Jones but he’s near the bottom.

Don’t let anyone downgrade your opinion on Sawyer Carroll. I know he’s old but I actually followed the box scores daily during the season; and I listened to his playoff games last postseason on the radio, and Sawyer is one of milb standouts. Before doing that I thought he was a C but now I rate him a B-. Again I’ll admit that he’s older but You have to keep in mind he was playing behind Rizzo/Clark (AAA), Blanks (AA) for most of the season. He’s very clutch and was extremely impressive in 2011. Also an above avg college player at Duke from my understanding?

I think Williams, Barboto, Tekotte, and Portillo should all be borderlines. I’d make a note that guys like Portillo and Williams would make nearly every top 30 on potential alone but in a system this deep a prospect also needs some results.

by johnnycomelately9 on Dec 10, 2025 8:15 AM EST up reply actions

freiman

Johnny, you described big Nate Freiman above, not Carroll. But he doesn’t belong on a top 30 either…

by realitypolice on Dec 10, 2025 9:12 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

you a fan of Carroll, John?

I’ve never really cared for him all that much. He’s going to be 26 in May, he’s clearly a corner OF or 1B, and he can’t hit left-handed pitching. Is he really going to get a chance, and will he deserve it?

I don't think so...

Sept. time doesn’t count against him & he had only 20-some IP.

-peter

by PeterF on Dec 8, 2025 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

Bass should still be considered a prospect

I just flipped through John’s 2011 book for his cutoff’s and didn’t see them. For BA, it’s 50 IP or 30 appearances, and he makes it on both ends, 48.1 IP, 27 appearances. Think they have a very good 7th or 8th inning reliever in that one. He has the stuff to succeed in the rotation, but don’t think he’s a long-term option there for San Diego with the other arms already slotted in the rotation and the impressive depth fast approaching.

I do my own top Padres prospect ranking for another site so I don’t want to influence your list… Bass is much more legit prospect than a lot of guys on the list. Sub-3.50 ERA at nearly every stop, decent K/9, doesn’t walk anyone, MLB success in first exposure…

I just view him as a graduated prospect. If space is limited, I’d rather hear about Stites or Pope. Guys who actually start the season in the minor leagues.

The thing with Stites is that I’ve seen him in person which makes it easier to write about him.

Medica seems like a possibility. I think Portillo and Stites are more interesting than Medica.

I'd have Portillo and Stites over Medica too.

I’d have Cates over Medica as well. Cates had a great fastball/change up combination in the 2 games I saw him throw on milb.tv. His FIP was much better than his ERA last year too.

by padmadfan on Dec 8, 2025 6:34 PM EST up reply actions

He'd be #20 (hitting) prospect for me

If he’s really 23 or 24 instead of 18, then that’s a whole other thing, but as of know I’m going with 20/21. That said, he outhit the likes of Blanks, Decker & Liriano by show more power (ISO), and while his ability to walk at this point is near non-existant, part of that is due to his ability to put the bat on the ball. His 11.7 K% coupled with his power make him a very intriguing prospect even with him a few (hopefully) years older.

John, do you care if I post my top 20 hitting/pitching prospects in the system? I could wait until yours is published and do it in that thread.

Looking forward to next years book. Last year there was a muck up in my deliver/order so I was given an advanced copy of the PDF, which is saved on my work & home computers, with my hard copy arriving a week later, which sits on my coffee table :) Is there a bundle deal to purchase both? The PDF in this day and age is a huge blessing and I would pay more for both. I’d put a 10 dollar value on that. Seems like their is some extra revenue to be made by bundling them with people like me and I’m sure numerous others.

by Amish_Willy on Dec 10, 2025 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

uh . . .

He didn’t out-hit those guys. He was playing in rookie ball.

by mrkupe on Dec 12, 2025 2:14 AM EST up reply actions

several to choose from...

Of the guys on your 40, I’d include Portillo over several: Medica, Stites, Pope, and Mikolas for starters.

Portillo’s upside, IMO, is what seperate’s him from the players I just mentioned. His struggles in 2011 were in large part against LHB:

vs LH - .336/.461/.559 - 12.3 h/9, 8.7 bb/9, 7.7 k/9, 2.37 WHIP, 5.60 FIP
vs RH - .232/.317/.424 - 7.8 h/9, 3.8 bb/9, 12.7 k/9, 1.33 WHIP, 3.69 FIP

Those strikeout numbers versus righties (and all the other numbers), as a teenager in the MWL, should be enough to get him in the book. Ft. Wayne had 25 arms pitch for them this year, 15 were atleast 23 years old. Portillo was the only teenager and was a full year younger then their next youngest arm (Sampson). Staying in the MWL, Taijuan Walker also was more dominant verse RH than LH in terms of K’s, and even then his 11 k/9 rate versus them doesn’t come close to matching Portillo’s.

I’m curious what the Padres think of his struggles versus LHB. Whether it’s a mechanical issue that is giving him problems or what. At his age there is plenty of room for growth, and I can’t ignore the good in favor of some guys whose upside doesn’t seem terribly bright.

by Amish_Willy on Dec 9, 2025 3:27 AM EST up reply actions

They think it’s because he has nothing approaching an effective change to throw and his slider breaks right into lefties’ wheelhouse. Or at least, they should think that…

by realitypolice on Dec 9, 2025 7:36 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

It’s strange though that in a similar amount of batter’s faced he only gave up 3 longball’s to lefties but 7 to righties, despite all those numbers to the contrary. At his age, you’d think there is ample time for his control to improve, his pitches to further develop.

In terms of upside amongst arms in the system, think only Sampson & Ross are in the same class.

Regardless, I think he is definitely one of the Padres 40 best prospects. Next year he’ll either shoot up the list, with top-10 potential, or drop out, but as of now he should be in it.

by Amish_Willy on Dec 9, 2025 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

Cumberland

i know its easy to say who to add back but the truth is i’m not sure who to cut but according to rotoworld cumberland is healthy and back. A guy who probably defensively sticks at SS and has a nice bat should easily remain on this list somewhere. What did he get from you a B- last year? If he has a healthy year and progresses at all that is at least a B prospect on next years list so to have him off top 40 i find to be a possible mistake.

Cumberland was cleared by a specialist who claims he was misdiagnosed and the padres are planning on moving him to 2B.

by mrkupe on Dec 8, 2025 6:22 PM EST up reply actions

If he’s healthy & hasn’t lost a step (so to speak) he’s a top 10-15 prospect in this system… But we have NO IDEA what he is now (in terms of ability)…

by PeterF on Dec 8, 2025 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

even at a "C"

the guy is worth mentioning how many low level relief pitchers get grade C? this guy has skills and he has a great story, even if he becomes a career AAA-2B he is a top 40 player in this organization.

in 900+ at-bats he strung together a .316/.380/.430…if he was more of a career .275/.325/.370 and then he got injured i would say leave him off, but he actually had some promise.

by James Westfall on Dec 8, 2025 7:01 PM EST up reply actions

i do...but at bats are at bats

some are obviously more telling than others, but its not like Cumberland gets to decide where he plays.

by James Westfall on Dec 8, 2025 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

In Cumberland's defense

Let’s be honest, after the 2012 season is said and done with Cumberland could be in the Padres plans. A Cumberland/Spangenberg middle infield in late 2013/2014 offers a lot to like, even with some throws from short sailing for an error. Cumberland in his career has struck out only 11.4% of the time, which is excellent, and exactly what you want with a guy with speed. His xbh/k ratio of .69 in 2009 & .64 in 2010 are nice marks.

For comparisson, James Darnell who I’d say is their best bat control guy in the upper-half of the minors has struck 15.5% of the time, though he ended the year in San Diego not whiffing once in his last 30 PA’s showing off his skillset. Really hope Darnell gets 400+ PA’s in SD in 2012. Same for Forsythe.

Cumberland could tun out to be a lot like Jason Bartlett, and in the minors both have very similar statistical skillsets, from the speed to the plate discipline. Obviously paying 500k vs 5m goes a long way for a similar player so that is a plus in its self. Not to mention getting a players best years in all likelyhood.

The problem is the Padres only getting 40 spots allocated, plenty of prospects to take this thing to 50, and interesting ones too.

by Amish_Willy on Dec 10, 2025 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

sure, if he shows he can hit then he could be out there

Not at SS though, which is a problem. I’d compare his SS defense to that of Grant Green, better actions but similar weaknesses . . .except I think Green might have the better arm. But sure, if second base is open Cumberland could certainly lay claim to it.

I’m hoping Darnell gets ABs, too. I was a little surprised he had issues in Tucson/SA . . .he’s got an exceptionally good approach for somebody in the minors, the big question will be how good his pure hitting ability really turns out to be.

I’ve mentioned this elsewhere, but not a Forsythe fan at all. He looks like a 4A guy when I have seen/watched him.

by mrkupe on Dec 12, 2025 2:19 AM EST up reply actions

Definitely think we need to see him play

he was always super injury prone to begin with, without a ton of success outside of the Cal league, and now he lost a year of development to a condition that could very easily have wrecked his hand0eye coordination.

by walnut falcons on Dec 8, 2025 6:27 PM EST up reply actions

Medica

Until we see if he can ever get back behind the plate, I think he has to be off this list. DePaula, Cates, Portillo and even Cody Hebner or Domoromo are all more interesting than he is as a first base/dh.

by realitypolice on Dec 8, 2025 9:37 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Stites

If everything goes REALLY well for him, in 2 years he might be Nick Vincent.

by realitypolice on Dec 8, 2025 9:39 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Carroll

You should go ahead and write him up so that when the Padres release him you can drop him into whatever system he lands in.

by realitypolice on Dec 8, 2025 9:42 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Domoromo

Probably should be on the list, great on base skills for his age/level.

Not sure if he belongs on the list, but what about Beamer Weems? Excellent defender at SS, but never really hit until this year when he gave up switch hitting.

by dts317- on Dec 9, 2025 9:14 AM EST reply actions

Beamer’s a nice part, but he’s got a similar profile to Andy Parrino (his glove’s ahead of Andy’s, his bat’s a step behind, even with the improvement last year) as a future utility guy. I’m also not positive they’ve got a medical clearance on him for 2012 just yet.

Domoromo is probably in the “other names” category in this organization right now, but could easily move up with a good return performance in Ft. Wayne this year.

by realitypolice on Dec 9, 2025 9:35 AM EST up reply actions

Well

I like Parrino, and he’s one of those guys I hate being cut as he will play this year and I hate not having a write up on a guy who will see time with the MLB team this season as a rookie. I realize he’s just a utility guy but now that he’s on the 40 man roster you might see more of him and I think they have a legit plan for him. I value what John thought about his season last year and where he sees him going forward. If he’s cut, a little quip here would be appreciated.

Frank Garces?

just a thought.

Garces put up great numbers this year

But I think the knock on Garces is that he’s 21 and still in the DSL pitching against teenagers. If/when he comes stateside it’ll be easier to evaluate where he stands.

I like Alberth just FYI, kid has + defense in OF

And is fast.

Also, is that new Wing guy a prospect? Heard he has a good glove and hit .315 in AAA… though it WAS in the PCL.

Padres Fan.

Medica

Besides, Gyorko, is there another RHB in their system who controls the strike zone as well as he does? Yeah he needs to get healthy, but not sure you can leave a guy off the list with 25+ HR power potential and .280/.380/.500 type of upside, whether he plays 1B or C.

Better control of the zone from RHBs in the system:
Darnell
Rincon
Danny Robertson
Carroll
Connor Powers

it would be awesome to see him make it to the bigs, even briefly
