boy

You look at his ground ball ratio and his Ks, and you gotta think that he’s that close to being an elite starter prospect. Of course, there have been plenty of others who have needed just a bit more control and never reached that.

But, still, you’re right that the 3 walks (60 strikes in 101 pitches) is promising. Hopefully, as with last year, once he’s in the groove of starting and pitching a lot of innings the BBs will go down. If so, Hellweg’s ceiling is high. Very high.

I was kinda bracing for the worst, this is best case. If he was pitching like that with slight inflammation, I can’t wait to see how he looks after a little time off.

It would be counterproductive to keep Bundy in low A if he does well tonight

Which he will since he has been flat out nasty so far, which means the O’s would be giving mixed messages to him if they stick both Schoop and Machado at AA before they were ready(though Machado’s doing great) and keep him sitting in A- ball this time next week even though he deserves a promotion. Many originally thought A+ was more than suitable to start and AA wouldn’t have been crazy either.

by oriolekid on Apr 17, 2025 6:17 PM EDT reply actions

Next start he'll go 4 IP

Then he’ll go 4 IP for three starts, then 5 IP for three, and so forth. He’s capped at 120 I believe so they want to allow him to pitch later in games deeper in the season.

That's foolish

A dozen innings at any level is hardly indicative of his skills, ability to adapt or pretty much anything else. I know you are new to following prospects, but the Orioles have no incentive to rush a teenager through the system.

Cubs

4 guys showing solid control on the bump tonight (scheduled): soft-tossing lefty Chris Rusin, big sinker throwing Dallas Beeler, Hayden Simpson, and PJ Francescon. Simpson’s the biggest name, but we have to wait and see how his velocity is as he builds back arm strength/workload (still was a minor surprise to me that he was sent to A+ to start … half wonder if it had to do with the warmer weather in Daytona).

The most intriguing guys as of now might be Beeler and Francescon. Both have mid-rotation ceilings, but as of now, profile more as 4/5 guys. Will be curious how Francescon’s breaking stuff is against tougher hitters, though.

by toonsterwu on Apr 17, 2025 6:40 PM EDT reply actions

someone said

on another site that the Daytona announcers had him at 85-87 to start. Even the most negative pre-draft reports didn’t have him this low, so this feels like a combination of the mono/fracture (and the subsequent lack of work) as a factor. Whether or not he gets the velo back or goes the way of Bobby Brownlie, only time will tell.

My mom and dad live 5 mins away from where bundy plays and...

Went to the game with really good seats and brought their radar gun. They said that their radar gun and other radar guns in stadium(the scoreboard gun and scouts guns) were very consistent. They said he was consistents hitting upper 90s(97-99) and went over 100 4 or 5 times including one at 102 and another one that was 102 on their gun and the scoreboard gun but 103 on the two scounts guns that were next to them. My dad said he throw off speed pitches but not very often maybe three an inning. If there is anything you want me to ask them please tell me soon so I can ask them before it gets to late their time.

Reports the team said Bundy hit 99 MPH. Those 102 reports weren’t accurate.

“Dylan wasn’t as sharp as he was his first two outings. I think he might’ve had a little more adrenaline going being his first start at home,” Shorebirds manager Ryan Minor told delmarvanow.com. “His stuff is good enough to get hitters out at this level by chasing high fastballs, but when he works down in the zone at times he’s tough to get the barrel of the bat on the ball.”

Pretty good when you’re not your sharpest and they still can’t manage a hit……..

didn't Ian Kinsler just sign a five year extension?

Besides, fans in Texas would mutiny if Kinsler went anywhere, so Profar @ 2B for Texas isn’t going to happen without an injury.

3B seems similarly unlikely with Beltre being signed through 2016 or 2017, depending on whether or not he can get the PAs to vest his option.

I’m guessing Profar gets to play three positions this year to showcase his versatility. If you get what I mean.

by tuna411 on Apr 18, 2025 9:18 AM EDT up reply actions

nobody will give Hamilton that much or that many years

There might be talk that the Rangers and Hamilton will go their separate ways after the season, but I think it’s just that, talk. The Rangers might be able to replace a lot, but there’s no way they can reasonably expect to replace Hamilton’s bat, and there’s no way they will walk away from the table. Hamilton isn’t really a candidate to go to the usual East Coast big spenders with the kind of media they have there. The Angels don’t have a need for outfielders. Detroit is almost always a candidate to do an insane deal, but I think putting Hamilton and Miguel Cabrera near one another sounds a little dangerous.

Who does that leave as a serious candidate to put up the money it would take to get Hamilton to walk away? Washington? I don’t see a reason why Hamilton would want to leave the comfort zone he’s developed in Texas and a team that should be in contention for the remainder of his career.

I think both sides continue to make some rumblings, then he signs a deal in the offseason before he hits the market. It won’t be too hard for both sides to get most of what they want. 4 or 5 year deal, and Hamilton plays the outfield for the next couple of years before moving over to first base once Michael Young’s contract is up.

by mrkupe on Apr 18, 2025 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

LA is one team that might be looking to make a splash

I could see Texas signing Josh to a 5 year deal but the difficulty is with the previous 1B contracts signed last offseason. Josh is as good of a hitter and plays a very good OF.

Those hitters got around 23 million per year over a very long term. That would mean fair market value would end up around 25+ per year if he was willing to take a 5 year deal.

by auclairkeithbc on Apr 18, 2025 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

No Andrus is a better offensive player

And is still only 23, so hasn’t reached his prime. Over Royce’s first five seasons, and 1966 PAs, he had a 75 OPS+. Andrus so far, with 1926 PAs, has a 80 OPS+.

by cookiedabookie on Apr 18, 2025 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

No, I'm saying when Andrus collapses

He won’t be getting better. If he doesn’t collapse, sure it is reasonable to expect him to get better.

by auclairkeithbc on Apr 18, 2025 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

This is a pretty dumb argument I guess

But players who have had a little bit of offensive success early in the majors sometimes collapse. Top prospects collapse sometimes too. Neither is likely, but when you are a well below average hitter, there is only so far you can fall and still be playing everyday.

by auclairkeithbc on Apr 18, 2025 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

can he get worse?

Absolutely. My point is that even if he does, with his glove and positional scarcity, he could have a Royce Clayton like career - 17 years. Given his success at an early age, I would assume he will still be a starter for the next decade, unless he completely falls apart.

by cookiedabookie on Apr 18, 2025 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

What do you expect of Profar

If he doesn’t fall apart?

by auclairkeithbc on Apr 18, 2025 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

why are you comping the two of them?

Profar NEEDS to hit. He doesn’t have the D Andrus does. If Profar is not an impact bat he won’t be better than Andrus. If he is less than an impact bat he will definitely be much less than Andrus.

I do expect Profar to be that impact bat. But thinking his ceiling is Andrus is just batshit crazy.

by pedrophile on Apr 18, 2025 11:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh?

I am saying maybe andrus will lose his job not kinsler or beltre or Hamilton.

by auclairkeithbc on Apr 19, 2025 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

well, the talk started about Profar

having the floor of Andrus. But for that to happen Profar would have to hit like an all-star. In his “floor” year. Because Profar is just a solid SS and Andrus is one of the best.

You talk about the collapse of Andrus but I don’t get it. IMO the collapse of Andrus has already happened. He hasn’t become the hitters some hoped he would. He is mediocre at best. But he can bunt, can run, steal bases, and is phenomenal on D. And if that is him underperforming what if he revitalizes his offence?

I think some certainly predicted worse than this. But in your previous post you were saying it is ridiculous to say that Profar’s ceiling is what Andrus is doing. Not sure who is saying that.

let’s say he doesn’t improve but maintains his current ability. i’d think at that point IF profar is looking great, he’d be a good player to trade. not sure that the rangers want to do that, but i don’t think it is a guarantee that he’ll be the SS for the rangers for the next 10 years.

Two statements

Same basic point. Andrus is far from proving himself to be a star. If Profar looks like one no one is safe. As to him washing out or being a defensive replacement, how much worse would he really have to hit?

by auclairkeithbc on Apr 19, 2025 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions

I totally disagree

When you combine his age, fielding, base running, and improving batting average, how many young shortstops would you rather have in the AL?

We'll see in a few years

My main point is not to compare Andrus to other SS, but to his teammates in positions Profar might take over. Andrus could easily be the worst of them in a couple years. Again, I’m not predicting a total collapse though I do think it is possible., but it wouldn’t be shocking at all to see him become a little worse hitter over the the next two years than he is now. And someone Rangers fans and management and analysts all think is just a decent guy to have a the position…someone who might be extremely tradeable.

by auclairkeithbc on Apr 19, 2025 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I know

I never said he will hit himself out of the league. But I think it is within the realm of possibilities…I sort of backtracked a bit right away though, saying he’d probably stick as a D replacement either way though. I’m not saying it is likely at all. This started with a stupid floor comment (all literal floor comments are stupid) about Profar. That Profar’s floor is washing out of baseball. Well, I don’t think that’s very likely, but I know it is possible. I think for Andrus is it even less likely, but it is also possible if we are dealing with absolute floor in a literal sense. That was my point.

Ah see

I am not so high on May, and I think Worley was pretty darned underrated last season. Pitchers that aren’t very highly regarded as prospects can make it while semi-high regarded upside guys fail all the time.

by auclairkeithbc on Apr 18, 2025 1:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Worley

Once his strikeout rate falls (and it WILL fall, unless he figures out how to make hitters swing and miss) he’s going to be a bad 4th/good 5th starter. If the Phillies didn’t need J.A. Happ, they won’t need Worley.

by PissedMick on Apr 18, 2025 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Worley is a bit better than that

And I don’t think May is.

by auclairkeithbc on Apr 18, 2025 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Worley is TERRIBLE at making hitters swing and miss.

And that’s important, because starting pitchers have very little control over called strikes. Making hitters swing and miss is a very repeatable skill, while getting them to watch a strike hasn’t shown to be very repeatable at all.

Worley’s Swinging Strike % last year was 5.5%, or seventh-worst among pitchers with at least 120 innings. The rest of the bottom 10? Chatwood, Penny, Blackburn, Pineiro, Mosely, Colon, Pelfrey, Maholm, Correia. What you’ll notice about these guys is only one of them Colon, has a strikeout rate above 5.5 or so. I’d say it’s an aberration, but given that Colon’s stuff is much better than the rest of the group, it might not be a huge one. Worley doesn’t have the argument to be the equal of a broken-down Bartolo Colon.

The guys at the bottom can be reasonable backend starters. It’s possible, but it requires them to either have elite control rates, like Colon and Kyle Lohse (who was just outside the bottom 10) or elite groundball rates, like Pineiro, Maholm, Pelfrey, and Blackburn have in their good years. Worley has neither.

And who is bringing up the rear in SwStr% so far in 2012? It’s our boy Worley with an unheard-of 3.4%. If he can keep that up, then you can expect him to struggle while losing a drastic amount of last year’s strikeout rate, or just fall out of the rotation altogether.

by PissedMick on Apr 19, 2025 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

i just don’t see Worley keeping that high of K rates with that arsenal.

Julio Teheran

5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, HBP, 7 K, 6 GO - 0 FO

Looks like a really impressive start for Teheran (though he was facing a pretty poor Norfolk lineup). After giving up a leadoff 2B to start the game, Teheran didn’t allow another ball to leave the infield and faced just one more than the minimum before allowing a 2 out walk in the 6th and promptly getting pulled.

It appears he’s over the elbow soreness that sidetracked him late in spring training and he’s at least found his control again. I was getting pretty worried something was physically wrong with him after his terrible first start of the season. I think I can finally exhale after two straight impressive performances.

by nixa37 on Apr 17, 2025 10:15 PM EDT reply actions

his last game was good as well it was just his 1st start.

by Jay212033 on Apr 17, 2025 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

It has been

I do still worry that he really isn’t getting much out of working in AAA. As he showed last year, he’s really just too good for this level. The things that get him in trouble against major leaguers are just a non-issue in AAA because his stuff is that good. I’m sure the Braves are still trying to have him focus on those things, but without any sort of negative reinforcement, I’m not sure how much improvement he’ll see.

by nixa37 on Apr 18, 2025 8:54 AM EDT up reply actions

what are you talking about?

Teheran has been good but not great at AAA, he’s by no means dominating there. There’s no way he’s “too good for that level.” He’s young, he needs to develop, and AAA is just the right place for him.

by scooter on Apr 18, 2025 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

You're missing the point

The problem is at AAA he can just throw the ball over the plate and guys still can’t do anything with. That’s doing nothing to help him learn that he needs to command the ball better. He may not be posting dominant K rates, but in terms of results, he’s dominated at the level without needing to K a bunch of guys. He tied for the league lead in ERA last year as a 20 year old (but yeah, he’s not dominating SMH). He’s now at a 2.52 career ERA at the level while allowing just 6 HR in 157 innings (compared to 4 in less than 20 in the majors). Guys at AAA just aren’t talented enough to punish him when he makes mistakes so he can keep making the same mistakes without ever getting any negative reinforcement. How is that going to help him learn anything?

by nixa37 on Apr 18, 2025 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

that's just complacency

i don’t really buy that argument, but even if it were true, it doesn’t really bode well for him

by blue bulldog on Apr 18, 2025 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Not sure I understand

It’s much harder to make improvements when your not being challenged. That’s why we have all these minor league levels with guys moving up the ladder throughout the season. Teheran has reached the top of that ladder and he’s still not being challenged. The Braves certainly want him to work on command and he has one of the best work ethics in the system so I’m sure he’s trying to work on it, but at the same time he’s going to be more willing to miss over the plate instead of off it because AAA hitters can’t hit it.

This is exactly what I wrote up in my scouting report of Teheran’s start in ST. His command is actually pretty good and he doesn’t miss his spots that often, but when he does it’s almost invariably over the heart of the plate instead of off the plate. I just think it will be much easier for him to improve in that area against hitters that can actually punish those mistakes instead of guys who are still overpowered by them.

by nixa37 on Apr 18, 2025 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

of course it's harder to make improvements when you're not being challenged

that’s what separates the “good” from the “elite”….the “good” compare themselves to other people, and when they are satisfied with that they stop trying to improve. the “elite” compare themselves to their own potential, and never stop trying to improve.

that’s the way it is in every field, not just baseball

by blue bulldog on Apr 18, 2025 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Wait what?

It has nothing to do with who you are comparing yourself to. It has to do with playing against better players so you actually improve. There is only so much improvement you can make against guys who clearly aren’t as talented as you. That’s the whole point of moving prospects up the minor league ladder. Teheran’s talent is clearly beyond AAA at this point. There’s only so much you can learn against minor league players.

though he's young

It’s a little surprising as Mayo lauded him for an “advanced approach”

But, again, it’s only mid-April.

he’s slightly concerning.

with that said

Criticizing a .260/.270/.400 line for a HS kid in low-A in April seems far too harsh.

The Other Castellanos

3-5, single short of the cycle, 2 SB

So far he’s hitting .364/.462/.745 on the season with 13 of his 20 hits going for extra bases. Yeah, he’s a bit oldish but the carryover from last season seems legit.
