5HR

by The_Bunk on Apr 7, 2026 2:39 PM EDT reply actions

Final Line

5 IP | 11H | 8 ER | 2 BB | 6 K | 5 HR

8 fly balls, 7 ground balls, 2 popouts, 1 line drive, 1 bunt. Not a good line by any means, but apparently there was a wind out to CF that grabbed a few balls and turned them into HR - indeed, all 7 HR in the game were to the middle third of the diamond. 5 HR on 8 FB is a crazy rate even if a pitcher isn’t pitching well. Also geenrated 8 swinging strikes on 39 swings, which isn’t bad, though interestingly all of those were in the 1st and 5th innings (none in between)

by hybrid on Apr 7, 2026 2:40 PM EDT reply actions

just 4 innings

he went 4 in his last spring training game, little odd they’d keep him at that particularly as he didn’t have a lot of pitches.

still, agree that nice K/BB ratio.

by scooter on Apr 7, 2026 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Martinez threw just 32 pitches, 27 of which were for strikes.

So if you take out the walk, he threw one ball.

by Big Phil on Apr 7, 2026 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions

No

Gameday counts below AA are not actual counts. They’re just basically K=3 strikes, BB=4 balls, BIP=1 strike and the odd random ball or two tossed in sometimes

by MjwW on Apr 7, 2026 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I know this about gameday....

But luckily those stats didn’t come from gameday.

Yadi is my hero

by Big Phil on Apr 8, 2026 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh, mea culpa then

There’s been a proliferation of those reports and that sounded suspiciously like one…especially the low pitch count (avg 8 per inning)

i'd go with about a 1% chance that your numbers are correct....

you heard/read someone who went off of the gameday numbers more than likely

Indeed

Just checked the box score:
Pitches-strikes: Martinez, C 32-27

I retract the mea culpa, though award a facepalm for not checking before assuming he had it right

by MjwW on Apr 8, 2026 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions

obviously the box score is incorrect

Russell has all one pitch at bats except the K and has one wasted ball. Martinez has the same. And Martinez is around the same when you add the K’s, the walk, the hits, the error and the HBP.

Pitches-strikes: Martinez, C 32-27, Russell, Z 12-11, Martinez, Ri 8-8, Rasmussen 44-30, Bramhall 18-14, Ojala 8-8.

Carlos Martinez 4.0 5 2 2 1 4 0 4.50
Zach Russell (W, 1-0) 3.0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0.00
Ricky Martinez (S, 1) 2.0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0.00

by pedrophile on Apr 8, 2026 2:39 AM EDT up reply actions

What I meant by "indeed" (poor word choice)

Is that billybeingbilly was right about there being a very low chance of it being right.

Hence my retracting the mea culpa. I thought, when Big Phil insisted the stats were right, that he had a report from some at the game or something. But it was just coming from the box score, which are inaccurate below AA.

I don’t see much cause for the chasm between he & Robert Stephenson/Jose Fernandez, etc at this juncture in the estimations of others aside from some nebulous ‘rave reviews’. Would Mike Trout be picked behind Chad Jenkins again in any imaginable scenario?

Watched Banuelos and Harper today

Banuelos has a good changeup when he can command it, his curveball has good break and is thrown in the mid 70’s, froze a few hitters with it. However, his fastball command is 40 IMO, he cannot throw strikes with his fastball, he had this last year as well. He was throwing in the 90-91 range and topped out at 93. It was a cold day, in the upper 40’s and a cool breeze, but he need at least a full year maybe another 1.5 years in the minors until he is ready. Right now, I can’t place his ceiling higher than a 3, he looks like a 4 right now with his subpar command of his fastball. Harper is good, but he has to get rid of the massive hole he has low and away with his swing. He struckout looking silly, granted it was against a lefty but he did not cut down his swing. He did draw a walk, but that’s because Banuelos was trying to nibble. He got a hit on a broken bat when he was jammed. He also showed some good defense from the outfield with a sliding catch in shallow right field.

MiLB.tv is your friend, of course, when it comes to a Triple A guy like him . . .although I will totally agree that even the tape doesn’t give you close to a full picture of a player, especially the little things in pitching like approach and poise.

I’ve never been thrilled by his breaking ball, but his FB/CH combo is pretty good if not overwhelming. The part where I would really disagree with you is on his ETA - I think he’s a prime candidate to break into the majors by the second half of this year in relief, where he’d offer immediate value as a LHP who could pitch to hitters on both sides of the plate. I think he’d probably get more giddy-up on the fastball as well. That wouldn’t preclude him from being a starter in the future, of course.

i think it’d be Levi Michael or Santana for #3 however. Niko Goodrum is probably an OF long term.

his problem hasn't been his bat

His problem is that he is a below-average defender in an outfield corner, and he’s had that issue since he was a teenager. He’s going to hit if he gets the chance, but he’s just not that special when you consider reasonable projections of his overall value.

by mrkupe on Apr 7, 2026 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I respectfully disagree

While Brown isn’t a good defender, the Phillies are said to be very down on his offensive game. He didn’t impress them last year and they were said to be very concerned about the look of his swing this spring. He is starting to look like a classic case of a change of scenery guy. I wouldn’t be surprised to see both him and Travis Snider dealt this season.

sure, I don't doubt all of that

The Phillies have never really seemed to buy into Brown the major leaguer as much as they did Brown the minor league prospect, though. Pretty crazy when you consider the kind of player that they could have gotten for Brown a couple of years ago.

watch him

Seemed to get overlooked a bit for a top 100 prospect. Command is the question, and that won’t be answered for a while. Stuff obviously excellent.

Oh yeah

I like him a lot. Thought he could get a nod for a top 100 - think John game him HM. I meant forgot he was throwing tonight. I think he has #2 upside. Workhorse body, good work ethic. Plus, for fantasy purposes, you have to love that home ballpark if he succeeds.
