Around SBN: Reviewing Potential Razorback Coaching Candidates

MiLB 4/9/2012

Some big names are on the hill today, with a couple games starting in less than an hour, let's get it rolling.

AAA- Casey Crosby, Andrew Brackman, John Ely, Travis Wood, Henry Sosa, Alex White

AA- Tyler Skaggs, Taijuan Walker, Robbie Erlin, Tim Melville, Jake Buchanan

A+ - Gerrit Cole, Angel Sanchez, Adrian Salcedo, Greg Billo, Braulio Lara

A- Justin Nicolino, Kyle Hallock, Raul Alcantara

As always, add any I missed in the comments.

I'm pretty excited about today, I own Walker, Erlin, Cole and Crosby in my dynasty league so I'll have a close eye on the minors this evening.

Indeed, a very solid outing

Peoria

I’m still a fan of Ben Wells, moreso than most. Marco Hernandez is toolsy and has loads of potential, but is having trouble offensively so far. As timh noted, DeVoss is sort of intriguing, although the total lack of pop means his margin of error is relatively thin.

The OF is fairly intriguing across the board, with uber-athlete Taiwan Easterling, the toolsy mini-Sosa in Reggie Golden, and Pin-Chieh Chen in CF. The pen has some intriguing arms, but you never know who is coming in.

by toonsterwu on Apr 9, 2026 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Hernandez did look like he had some pretty good tools. Looked strong in the field with decent range. He didn’t exactly have a good game, but it was easy to see the potential is there. I was also inpressed with Pin-Chieh Chen. Had a good grasp of the strike zone, albeit from just a couple at bats that I saw him.

I was actually suprised that Easterling is still in A ball. He was here last year. Thought he had moved on.

There’s only so much you can take from the numbers at this level for such a player, although obviously it’s better for him to have a good start than a not-so-good start. Continues to have a very respectable No. 3 starter projection (and no, please don’t tell me “I think he can be a No. 2”).

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Apr 9, 2026 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

let me put it this way

Hamels in his first pro season, Sally League, struck out 42.9 percent of all batters he faced. As good as Nicolino was last year, he was a level lower and struck out “only” 33.3 percent of the batters he faced. Which is why I give a lot of credit to Nicolino for what he has done so far, but at that stage in his career, Hamels was already on a totally different level.

by mrkupe on Apr 9, 2026 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Parks and Goldstein both think he has a number 2 ceiling. Quoted a scout as saying his change could develop into a 70 big league pitch.

Has projection for 3 above-average pitches with above-average ability to throw them for strikes. He’s also shown to be a groundball pitcher to date. For a LHP; that is phenomenal.

by metafour on Apr 9, 2026 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Projecting to do a bunch of things above average does not make someone phenomenal

Projecting to do a bunch of things above average does not make someone phenomenal. In fact, that sounds exactly like a #3 barring sensational command.

by nixa37 on Apr 9, 2026 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

A LHP throwing 3 above-average pitches for strikes is a #3 starter? Ok, LOL. Your expectation for pitchers is clearly significantly exaggerated beyond belief.

by metafour on Apr 9, 2026 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Throwing pitches for strikes is mostly meaningless

To be better than a #4 with that stuff, you need to have the command to put those pitches exactly where you want. It’s incredibly hard to be better than a #3 at the MLB level without a legit plus pitch.

by nixa37 on Apr 9, 2026 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

He already commands his pitches (see: the fact that he is nearly unhittable almost every time he has stepped foot on the mound) and his changeup is going to be a plus pitch, if its not there already (Piliere called it a plus pitch on March 29th).

by metafour on Apr 9, 2026 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, if you change the scouting report, then I can see better than a #3 starter

My comments aren’t about Nicolino, who I haven’t seen enough to make a judgment on. They are related to a hypothetical LHP with 3 above average pitches and nothing noteworthy on command because that is what I saw being described.

As for you claim about his command based on stats in short season ball and low-A, I would recommend staying away from comments like that if you want to be taken seriously. He’s a LHP with solid stuff in the low minors. It’s not out of the ordinary to see those guys put up great stats if they can get it over the plate because the guys they’re going up have little experience against LHP with legit stuff.

by nixa37 on Apr 9, 2026 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions

If you want to be taken seriously dont try to tell me the limitations of a kid you clearly know less than me about.

by metafour on Apr 9, 2026 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Good thing I never said a word about Nicolino

But hey, feel free to try and find one comment I made about him in this thread.

by nixa37 on Apr 9, 2026 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

You’ve made 4 posts on this subject yet you’ve “never said a word about Nicolino”. Interesting. If you want to be taken seriously maybe you should stick to the subject at hand; or does that make too much sense?

by metafour on Apr 9, 2026 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

This is beyond ridiculous

I commented on pitchers with 3 above average pitches being phenomenal because that was part of the topic at hand. Nothing I’ve said has been specifically about Nicolino. It’s not my fault if you didn’t understand what I was saying. A normal person would realize their mistake and just move on. You on the other hand have gone out of your way to attack me and try to provoke an argument. You’re not worth it. Have a good night.

by nixa37 on Apr 9, 2026 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont make mistakes. I apologize for exposing the fact that you are very mistaken on this subject. Nicolino doesn’t throw 98mph; thus the fact that he has been virtually unhittable should suggest that his pitchability is very advanced and that he’s not just throwing crap in the zone (or as you put it; “getting it over the plate”). That doesn’t even need to be mentioned if you know anything about the prospect, which you clearly dont. You then babbled something about a LHP needing a legit plus pitch to be better than a #3: Nicolino does project to have a plus pitch, further proving that you are mistaken

So what have we concluded other than that you just came in here trying to tell me something that I already knew about a prospect that your statements didn’t even apply to? No; Nicolino isn’t simply throwing 3 pitches over the plate. and yes, he does project a plus pitch. Yet you are the one giving me pointers about how to be taken seriously?

by metafour on Apr 9, 2026 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

You sound angry
Projecting to do a bunch of things above average does not make someone phenomenal. In fact, that sounds exactly like a #3 barring sensational command.

Where are you getting the idea this is about Nicolino? I’m merely commenting on you claim that a LHP with 3 above average pitches and above average ability to throw them for strikes is phenomenal. You may be referencing Nicolino, but I’m referencing what I actually see in your own scouting report of him. Like I said, I’ve barely seen the guy, which is why I take your word on the scouting report.

Throwing pitches for strikes is mostly meaningless
To be better than a #4 with that stuff, you need to have the command to put those pitches exactly where you want. It’s incredibly hard to be better than a #3 at the MLB level without a legit plus pitch.

Again, where do you get the idea this comment is about Nicolino? I’m responding to your condescending, sarcastic remark about my take on the pitcher you described in your scouting report. For clarity’s sake that #4 was a typo that was supposed to be a #3, but that really has nothing to do with this.

Again, you’re saying I’m mistaken on the subject, yet you didn’t even know what subject I was talking about. All I ever did was respond to your own conclusions based on your own scouting report. I didn’t comment on the accuracy of your scouting report at any point in this conversation.

by nixa37 on Apr 9, 2026 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

You see; my “scouting report” didn’t include parameters that should be common sense with regards to Nicolino, because I wasn’t posting a scouting report. For instance; I nonchalantly stated that he had “3 above average pitches” when one of the three is actually a plus pitch (or should I say; about as plus as you’re going to get for a low minors pitcher out of HS). I also lazily only stated that he throws those pitches for “strikes”; when once again, if you know anything about Nicolino, it is common sense that “throwing for strikes” doesn’t mean “getting it over the plate” in this case. At no point in time was I trying to give my analytical scouting report, and your response was to try and tutor me on shit I already knew (really? a low minors pitcher can sometimes look good just by getting the ball over? thanks!).

Now that I’ve explained it further you can see that nothing you wrote applies to Nicolino at all, and guess what, I never asked for you to teach me anything…let alone shit I knew.

by metafour on Apr 9, 2026 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions

stop please

It’s obvious that you really, really like Justin Nicolino to a degree that is probably making everybody else really, really uncomfortable. Just leave it at that.

by mrkupe on Apr 9, 2026 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe we could all make up hypothetical arguments

and then generalize them claiming you’re not actually talking about the player being discussed, because you know little to nothing about the actual player being discussed in the first place. Then, let’s all get into an argument over not actually basing your statements on the player in question, but the general scouting report which was about that player in the first place. It just doesn’t get any better than that.

by Looney4baseball on Apr 9, 2026 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

if you read nixa's original statement

it was only that barring exceptional command 3 above average pitches makes said pitcher a #3 pitcher, not an exceptional pitcher.

Looney hates me

by nixa37 on Apr 10, 2026 7:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Its okay

I already know reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit. Feel free to point to any comment I made that implied what I was saying was about Nicolino and not this claim I actually responded to.

Has projection for 3 above-average pitches with above-average ability to throw them for strikes. He’s also shown to be a groundball pitcher to date. For a LHP; that is phenomenal.

by nixa37 on Apr 10, 2026 7:38 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not going to tolerate some guy coming in here and tutoring me on how to be “taken more seriously”; or teaching me that low minors pitchers sometimes look good just by getting the ball over the plate.

He mistakenly took my post as a scouting report when I was blatantly just posting a short blurb. Then he used that as some sort of opportunity to imply that I didn’t know what made a #2 starter, LMAO. Oh, and this whole time he is talking in a discussion about Justin Nicolino all while admitting to knowing very little about him….what? Is this real life?

Yes nixa37…I know that “throwing pitches for strikes” is meaningless if you are throwing pitches belt-high over the heart of the plate. Thank you for teaching me this great knowledge.

Let me teach you something: when someone writes a half-sentence blurb on a player; it is generally understood that this is not a scouting report and that there is likely some things left out that is implied. For instance; if I wrote about Bryce Harper I wouldn’t have to blatantly imply that he has good power. The guy somehow took me saying that Nicolino throws “3 pitches for strikes” as implying that he just randomly throws those pitches over the plate. Maybe he’d be taken more seriously if he didn’t try to pigeonhole my statements about a player he admittedly knows nothing about.

by metafour on Apr 9, 2026 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

You clearly don't want to ever be taken seriously

This ridiculous rant of yours has proven that.

My point was trying to discern how good someone’s command is based on short-season and low-A numbers is a fool’s errand. This is especially true for LHP, who find it much easier to dominate the low minors because of the relative lack of experience their competitors have facing legit velocity and off speed stuff from that side of the rubber.

The only reason I popped into this discussion is that you basically responded to a post about Nicolino being a #3 pitcher by disagreeing, describing a #3 pitcher, and then claiming that said pitcher you described was phenomenal. I was merely voicing my disagreement with that statement.

by nixa37 on Apr 10, 2026 7:30 AM EDT up reply actions

…oh, and I love this: me getting into a flame war means that I “really really like Justin Nicolino”, to the point that its making everybody “really, really uncomfortable”? What? I’m not even the guy that compared him to Hamels…

I simply don’t agree with the above statement. That is what I was responding to. If you really think that any LHP that has projection for 3 above-average pitches and an above average ability to throw them for strikes is phenomenal, then you obviously think there are quite a few phenomenal pitching prospects around.

He had a nice debut last year in the NYPL, and John has praised him as being extremely polished, but clearly something was off today.

Clearly, this is not the same extremely polished arm that the Astros saw when they drafted him last year. My bet is that he has a minor injury or something… he’s the last guy I’d expect to be pulled due to wildness.

by kyuss94 on Apr 9, 2026 8:22 PM EDT reply actions

Also of note in the Lexington/Hagerstown game

Brian Goodwin was pulled for a pinch runner. Could be precautionary, but my guess is that he pulled up lame, as it was immediately after he legged out an infield hit. I’d hate to see him come down with an injury, as he is quickly becoming a personal favorite of mine. Fingers crossed it’s just a tweak.

by kyuss94 on Apr 9, 2026 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand that his upside is extremely limited

But I thought he could turn into a nice #5 starter/long relief workhorse in short order.

Alen Hanson (SS - PIT)

1-3, 2nd HR of the Season

Plus defender at SS; showing solid pop in first 4 games. May be one to continue to watch as he has been a particular sexy sleeper-follow. Aggressive promotion to Low-A from GCL, looks to be adapting well.

by Mr. Smizik on Apr 9, 2026 8:27 PM EDT reply actions

I'm driving that damn wagon, Cutch

And……for a system lacking in above-average options at SS, we need him to work out. Obviously, he’s a ways away, but, considering that nothing (w/ all due respect to Chase and Mercer) is ahead of him in the system, I’m following and praying.

Tim's always kind of liked him as well

I remember following him last year (particularly early) and being amazed at the amount of multi-hit games he would get. Very similar to Marte’s year last year - every time you looked, he was getting another hit.
