likely

Just a reward for what Williams did last Sept and a mechanism to keep GR’s innings managed a little bit, as well as giving him a bit more development time in AAA. I expect he will be up if/when Williams gets hit. I am very much on board with Richards after watching him this spring. The stuff to miss bats is present and if he continues to advance his secondaries and command he could very well pitch towards the front of a rotation soon.

by St.Steve on Apr 15, 2025 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

With Jerome out of options, I figure this is just him getting that chance since he did well enough as the starter last year. If he falters, Richards looks like he’s on the cusp

I’m a little concerned about how Hanson’s platoon split might go when he’s not on a hot streak. 10 Ks in 37 AB vs. RHP indicates he still has plenty to learn. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very happy with the power, speed, and contact, but I want to see that K rate vs RHP improve before I label this a true breakout.

It was a heads up play.

Bu I think most fast players could make the play. I’m not trying to take anything away from him, but it wasn’t an unheard of play.

by mr. maniac on Apr 15, 2025 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions

really?

i mean, i can see if he was running on the pitch and it was a crazy bloop single that took a funny hop or something. but from the description, it was a standard single off into right field that he was able to score from first on. i’m sure it wasn’t a solid line drive right at the guy, but it’s impressive nonetheless.

and regardless, if it was a heads up play rather than pure athleticism/speed, that only makes him sexier. 80 runner + 80 instincts = super duper star.

by jwa1417 on Apr 15, 2025 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions

You didn't watch the video?

He was running on the pitch and it was a groundball base hit through the hole. Normally, a guy would just take 3B. The OF completely misread the play and slowly (and quite carelessly) lobbed the ball back even though Trout was still running. The IF noticed and threw for home, but it was too late.

It was a headups play, but I’d imagine most fastball players could athletically do it.

by mr. maniac on Apr 15, 2025 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

woops...i saw the story on my phone earlier and totally missed the link to the video

yeah, not as impressive as the description made it seem. and it sounded/looked like he got a ridiculous jump too, he was almost at second when the ball got through the infield. not as great as it seemed. oh well. dunno what the right fielder was doing, i’m pretty sure if trout is on base i’m not throwing a lollipop to the cutoff under any circumstance

by jwa1417 on Apr 15, 2025 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

pretty impressive for me

Two pitchouts, one throw over to first. After that how many players would be able to do that? IMO only players with 80 speed. Bourjos, Trout, Hamilton. Bourjos probably wouldn’t have been as agressive. Anyways, pretty impressive.

by pedrophile on Apr 15, 2025 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

it wasn't really a head's up play, at least not according to Trout.

He said that the 3B coach didn’t put up a stop sign, so he just kept running. It doesn’t sound like he read the situation or anything. In fact, if the OF hadn’t lolligagged the throw in, Trout (and his coach) would probably have looked like an idiot.

Still impressive speed of course.

High minors Astros SPs

Paul Clemens- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K. Lucas Harrell’s first start was fun, but I think he’s more of a pen arm since he really only has two pitches. Paulie needs a shot in the rotation ASAP, he has been brilliant in AAA and had a great spring.

Jake Buchanan- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K. He’s not easy to get excited about, but he generates ground balls and works very efficiently. He survived Lancaster last season (he posted the best ERA a Lancaster SP has ever had in 2011) and is holding his own in AA. He added a 2 seamer in the offseason and it has gotten good reviews. I see him a nice back of the rotation workhorse type and the Astros could really use one of those.

Such a gigantic joke

As a Cardinals fan I don’t mind Dusty wasting his talent in the bullpen. As a Chapman fantasy owner it makes me angry, though I’m still wracking up great Points/IP scores in Ottoneu with him.

He looked great in spring training and has been even better out of the pen this season. I really do think he has turned the corner and would be a pretty dominant starter right now, yet the Reds are throwing Homer Bailey out there every fifth day. Such a waste of talent in a year when they really should be trying for the division.

I think they'll come around

if Leake and/or Bailey continue to be mediocre. Bailey, FWIW, came out firing 94 on his first pitch the other day and was routinely 93-95. He let some borderline calls rattle him and lost focus — he’s still obsessed with painting the black — but his stuff looked strong, and I’m prone to give him more rope. I hate the idea of wasting development time for Chapman, but he is killing it in relief.

JD Martinez

I would just like to point out that JD Martinez currently sports a .371/.436/.714 slash line and has hit safely in all 9 games this year. He’s been pretty awful in the field but hasn’t made any awful errors or anything, just takes some funky angles and generally looks unathletic. That said I think he’s going to be a rock as the Astros’ 3 hitter for quite some time.

by kyuss94 on Apr 15, 2025 6:50 PM EDT reply actions

Comp

I think it’s been said before, but Martinez is a younger version of Hunter Pence.

Both were solid prospects. Pence has been a solid regular, better than that at times. I expect the same from Martinez.

by mrkupe on Apr 15, 2025 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree there

Pence is significantly faster than JDM, and his approach is much weaker. I also think Hunter has more raw power, though I think their HR totals could potentially be similar.

by kyuss94 on Apr 15, 2025 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Numbers-wise...

I expect similar production. Nobody can replicate Pence’s funky swing — Martinez has better mechanics — but they’re both average-ish fielders with average power and never really get much mainstream recognition.

You are right about Pence’s speed. He’s definitely a step or two faster.

"Hosmer right in between Carter and Alvarez…. what is this list based on? height?" -- okteds, visionary (1/28/10)

by criminal type on Apr 15, 2025 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Pence really turned into a good RF

He’s got a great arm, and even though he sometimes takes awkward angles a la JD, he hustles his ass off and doesn’t often let it prevent him from making plays. I think in terms of defense, Hunter has JD beat by quite a bit. JD could tighten some things up but just from an athleticism standpoint, he’ll never be as valuable defensively as Hunter is. He definitely can’t handle RF with his fringy arm strength. I could see similar offensive production, in fact JD might have more AVG/OBP upside, but Hunter’s power and speed advantages kind of cause the comp to fall apart. To be fair though, I’m not sure I have a comp for JD either.

Their swings are completely different (and LHB vs RHB), but I see a similar-type profile as a guy who could go .290/360/.480 with poor defense in a corner.

by anjichpa on Apr 16, 2025 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

That is pretty optimistic

But I could see maybe a peak comp.

by auclairkeithbc on Apr 16, 2025 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Is it?

Why do you think an Ethier comp is so optimistic. The guy is at .288/.336/.465 over his first 265 MLB PA and went .342/.407/.551 over 1261 minor league PAs. His MLB sample is still on the small side, but it’s certainly relevant. Statistically, the only thing I think you can nitpick is that his walk rate is only ok. While his performance has dipped every time he’s first been exposed to a new level, he’s never been overmatched. He’s always been a bit old to be considered an elite prospect, but never so old that he could be considered a non-prospect.

In those first 62 MLB games, Martinez has accumulated an fWAR of 2.0. Ethier’s peak full-season fWAR is 3.5 (141 games).

sample size is a long way from being useful

It is obvious, however, that he is having no issues with the transition from short season to full season ball, and that gives him plenty of helium. There’s also been a little buzz that his strike zone judgment is better than you might think going off of previous numbers, and it sounds like he’s got the stuff to be a pretty fair defender at 3B. His power is a major separator, of course.

why bring up Chris Davis then?

Sano doesn’t turn 19 until May. A little early to be invoking the name of a failed prospect as a reason to knock him, isn’t it?

Besides, Davis didn’t even start failing until he was 23, in his first full major league season. We are a long way from seeing Sano at a similar point in time, and it will take more than a few coincidences for him to resemble the type of player that Davis was at that time. That’s not to say that Sano definitely won’t fail, as he might - but if you’re going to take the overly fatalistic approach, then why even bother with prospecting?

Davis and Sano

throughout the minors, Davis had a K:BB ratio of 492:158. That’s a 3.1:1 ratio. In low-A, as a year old, it was 65:23 (close to 3:1). The next year, as a 21 year old in high-A and AA, he had a 150:35 ratio (almost 5:1), but had a .598 slugging. I guess you might take that ratio if that’s what you get.

Sano, though, has a 148:55 ratio (2.6:1 K:BB ratio) in no level above Rookie Ball. This year (low-A), though, is better (11:8) without suffering in power (.638 slugging).

I’m not comparing Sano to Davis, but there are some interesting numerical parallels to look at.

by JoelGuzman'sScout on Apr 16, 2025 6:04 AM EDT up reply actions

I think all he was pointing out

is that Sano probably does have to address his K% because it’s hard to be a productive major leaguer if you strike out in 30% of your ABs. Obviously Sano has age on his side and he’s facing fairly advanced competition which is why he’s still a top-20 prospect. It seems like you don’t like the comparison with Chris Davis which is understandable as it is far too early to say that Sano is a failed prospect. Still, for his MiLB career, he has struck out in 29.1% of his ABs. By comparison, Davis has struck out in 27.2% of his MiLB ABs.

None of this is to suggest that Sano can’t make the necessary adjustments only that he is currently a prospect with something to work on (which prospects don’t have something to work on?). He’s really young and really talented so he has the time and ability to fix things but if he doesn’t it’s going to be tough for him to develop into a true star with that K rate even with his power potential. There are a handful of guys who have made it work but they are the exception rather than the rule.

C.Davis strikes out a lot because of a long swing.

He has a huge hole in his swing. There are many others like him, I think Joel Guzman was one.

Sano strikes out a lot because of an extremely aggressive approach. Delmon Young would be a better comp.

If we are comping to Davis the improvement we are looking for is a shortened swing. If we are comping to Delmon we are looking for walk rate improvement. Or more specifically controlling the strike zone.

Davis and Sano don’t seem to be similar in where their flaws are and what they need to improve.

by pedrophile on Apr 16, 2025 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

true i'd say Delmon Young is a MUCH more quality comp to Sano than Chris Davis...

And Sano surely will have a higher BB% in 2012 then Young ever had at or below single a ball.

SO theres that…

I’m not saying Sano is likely going to be the top BA prospect for 2-3 years straight. Because well, he probably shouldn’t ever be, but Sano and Chris Davis in the same sentence is pretty down right confusing. I haven’t and never understoond Criminal Type in this segment.

Its like saying Juan Pierre is fast and steals bases, but has no power.

Well Joey Gathright was fast and steals bases, but also had no power.

Drew Pomeranz

4.1 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HR

faced 24 batters against the Dbacks today

I’ve said this before, but I really think there’s legitimate concern about whether Pomeranz will be able to sit at the top of a rotation. It always worries me when a guy racks up strikeouts in the minors when his only plus secondary is a curveball. 1) Curveballs just don’t generate a lot of swings and misses, and 2) you also need a pitch that can handle opposite-handed hitters. As good as his curveball was today, the Dbacks mostly just didn’t swing at them, and waited for a poorly located 90-91 mph fastball (bound to happen in any given outing) to hit.

Overall, was just unimpressed by Pomeranz today.

here's the list of pitchers in 2011

who generated a ton of value from their plus curveball, but didn’t have a separate secondary to back them up

Wandy Rodriguez, Javier Vazquez, Livan Hernandez, AJ Burnett, Josh Tomlin, Brett Myers, Charlie Morton, Ryan Vogelsong, Chris Volstad…..not a very inspiring list

by blue bulldog on Apr 16, 2025 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions

definitely is an issue

And many of the best minor league curveball pitchers when they arrive to the bigs either shelve or minimize the curve.

IMO the bigger problem isn’t the swing and miss, it’s the swing part. The curve isn’t easy to get strikes called which setups up a lot of forced fastball counts. Of course these pitchers look sweet when they have control of their curve.

by pedrophile on Apr 16, 2025 3:26 AM EDT up reply actions

That's really not how those should be used

You can’t call a pitch a plus just because it has a good pitch value. Just look at Tim Wakefield’s fastball value and then try to argue that he did in fact have a plus fastball despite throwing in the mid 70s.

by nixa37 on Apr 16, 2025 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

it's not perfect

but it’s actually very useful in this case

i don’t care whether you count it as a plus fastball or not. i only care whether about its overall effectiveness, which includes stuff, command, sequencing, and all that jazz.

the point still stands. pitchers who’s only effective secondary is a curveball don’t tend to amount to much.

by blue bulldog on Apr 16, 2025 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not useful at all

Wakefield’s fastball didn’t have a positive pitch value for his fastball because he had a plus fastball. He had a positive pitch value for it because hitters had to worry so much about his knuckleball that they still struggled when he did throw his (terrible) fastball. Yet this mode, which you claim is useful, gives all that credit to his fastball instead of his knuckleball. Any semi-informed person who actually watched Wakefield pitch could tell you what was going on.

by nixa37 on Apr 16, 2025 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

that's true

that’s why i said the system is not perfect, and you can probably imagine a similar phenomenon happening with changeups

but how does that affect curveballs? specifically, how does it affect the sample of pitchers above who had effective curveballs (when they threw curveballs, outs happened) but didn’t have a separate effective secondary (when they threw a changeup or slider outs didn’t happen)?

and again, how does this affect the overall point? that pitchers who’s only effective secondary is a curveball don’t end up as top of the rotation guys?

what exactly, are you trying to argue?

by blue bulldog on Apr 16, 2025 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Can't speak to the pitchers above

I’m speaking more generally about the idea that pitch values give a reasonable idea of how good pitches actually are. A ton of what goes on in those values has to do with sequencing and what pitches hitters are forced to respect more.

Also, a positive value doesn’t actually indicate that outs actually happened since changes in count are taken into account. That’s a sizable part of the rating for Wakefield’s FB for example. He threw it a lot when he would get down 3-0, the hitter would be taking, and he’d get a free strike.

I’m not even necessarily disagreeing with what you’re saying about guys who rely on the curve (though at the same time, how many guys that only have one effective secondary other than a curve end up TOR guys either?), but the idea that you can somehow use pitch values to validate that claim. I just hate how people try to use pitch values sometimes.

by nixa37 on Apr 16, 2025 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's a list of pitchers from 2012 ...

who, so far, have used a curveball a whole lot (defined as 15% or more)

Felix Hernandez
Ivan Nova
Roy Halladay
Gio Gonzalez
Jake Arrieta
Stephen Strasburg
Jovani Gallardo

I’ll take that group.

I know this doesn’t address the issue discussed by the OP on Pomeranz, but good curveballs aren’t dead. Or even dying.
