Upcoming MiLB supplemental draft
Each year, my fantasy league has a supplemental draft for the players that were drafted into the MLB last year or just happened to not be owned in my league. Every year some teams get drafted in my leagues regular draft (like Bauer and Harper this year), so the pickings are a bit limited.
This year, I have the 5th pick. I'm assuming Bundy and Cole will be gone, so I need to order my top 3 of what's remaining.
My current minor league system:
C: Mesoraco
IF: Hak-Ju Lee (not much a believer - probably better in real life than in fantasy)
OF: Gose, Marisnik
SP: Shelby Miller, AJ Cole, Jacob Turner
Based on the fact that 1) I have decent SPs (and have always been able to pick up decent SPs in the past) and 2) it's a fantasy league so catchers and middle infielders have extra value, here is how I have the top 5-6 ranked. Any objections?:
- Rendon I could see him being available at #5 given his injury and uncertain position. I think he'll move to 2b.
- Hultzen (a pitcher, but has been amazingly dominant)
- Bogaerts (can't really decide between him or Lindor if it come down to it. - I'm a Sox fan, so I'd probably grab him)
- Lindor
- Bubba Starling (dark horse - could be a beast - but likely won't be up for 3 years)
Manny Banuelos and Archie Bradley are also both available, but I likely won't take either ahead of the above.

Hultzen for me
Not a Rendon fan. Made of glass and I don’t buy him as a power hitter.

This is what I always say, but it really depends on your league.
in an OBP league, Rendon has elite potential. In a deep league, I like Hultzen a lot more than I do in a shallow one, where #3 starters can be found on the wire if you’re smart/lucky. In a shallow league, Boegarts may have the best upside, as his power gives him the highest fantasy potential.
Always give your league details when asking fantasy questions.

my bad, you are correct.
The league is 5×5 with OPS instead of AVG.
We have 21 active players, and with 27 man rosters and an 8 man minor league system.
Minor leaguers are kept indefinitely though must be used as a keeper (in the 27th round) after they lose rookie eligibility.

I think OPS saps a lot of Rendon's value.
He’s not going to hit for big power. His biggest strength offensively will likely be AVG/OBP, which will be negated by your format.
If it’s at least a 14-team league, I’d go with Hultzen.
If it’s shallower than that, I could see going with Boegarts or Lindor.

Go with Starling
Or Lindor if Bubba is taken.
Question marks about durability and power bring Rendon down a peg.
Hultzen is nice but I think you’re correct in leaning towards a hitter with such a high pick.
Bogaerts is nice too but I think he’s more of a 3B than SS, which is why I have Lindor above him.
Starling is a while away from the Show but his upside is tremendous. Now that he’s no longer playing football and focusing strictly on baseball can only help his reach that sky high ceiling. Power/speed guys are gold in 5×5 fantasy.
Now, if Bundy somehow slips and those 2 guys are taken, then maybe an SP wouldn’t be too bad.
