AA Ball - James Paxton faces Trey McNutt, Tyler Thornburg goes for Huntsville, Alex Colome vs Zeke Spruill, Ethan Martin. Tyler Cloyd

High A - AJ Burnett rehabs for Bradenton, Wilmer Font makes his first start in a long time for Myrtle Beach ... knuckleball perhaps?, Chris Reed starts for Rancho Cucamonga

A Ball- Micheal Foltynewicz starts early today for Lexington, Adam Conley, stud Jose Campos starts for Charleston and, yes, Dylan Bundy will toe the bump for Delmarva

Wilmer Font

Throws a knuckleball?

Not that I know of but, Kenny Powers does

. . . not sure if Wilnmer has reached that level of desperation yet :)

youth

East Down and Out, references aside, I doubt Font is that desperate yet, he’s only 21 years old (22 in May) and in hi-A ball despite the injuries.

What I’d be more worried about is that he doesn’t know where his fastball is going most of the time, so I doubt that the pitching staff wants him to pick up a pitch that he has even LESS control over!?! lol

Eastbound and Down…must have more coffee before typing…

I was just joking

.. anyways beerman. It was mostly a reference to Font being on the Myrtle Beach squad. Wilmer has enough to worry about. Coffee sounds good though. I just made some.

Ya I know it was in jest...

I was just picturing the Myrtle Beach mgr. watching the game while covering his eyes if Font was dealing with a KN on top of his FB.

McNutt

was shutting out the opponent again, but racked up a high pitch counts as a result of walks and wild pitches and was pulled after a hit in the 5th. As of now, 4 shutout, 2 hit, 3 walk, 5 K’s, but is responsible for man on first.

by oriolekid on Apr 11, 2025 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not as if there isn't precedent for it.

Hell, Mike Marshall went straight to the majors from high school. A significant number of evaluators thought AA was the right fit for Bundy. A+ wouldn’t have been a surprise at all.

And I also agree with sourstuff’s assertion that A- could be counterproductive. Bundy’s stuff and polish is so above that league, he’s not going to be learning anything by dominating guys there. Let’s see what happens with him when he faces hitters who have a similarly advanced idea of what they’re doing.

I was just answering your question

There have been a few other players for whom A+ was bantered about . . .Clayton Kershaw comes to mind. In most of those cases, the teams seem to have preferred to introduce the player on a conservative track and then pushed them up to AA.

I think the fact that the 3 players haven’t quite been as good as hoped for is unrelated to where they started their careers; all were quite good at A+, especially Butler (who played great in the Texas League post-promotion that same year).

I don’t think he’s reached his potential yet - he has a lot of power that he can tap into if he wants it, and that would turn him into one of the best sluggers in the league.

“…. there’s still a lot for him to learn in the minors. He just won’t learn any of it in A-ball. If the Orioles want to keep his workload down and bring him along slowly, that’s their call, but based on ability and readiness for the challenge, he probably should get promoted to Double-A tomorrow. As long as he’s in either Delmarva or even Frederick, he’s just going to be a man amongst boys.”

full read- http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/dylan-bundy-too-good-for-a-ball/

by rdf8585 on Apr 11, 2025 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess Cameron doesn't care that

Bundy will be going every 5th day instead of 7th day. Or that Bundy is starting in a full season league which is fairly rare for a high-schooler. Or that many high-schoolers like Taillon before him tired dramatically as the season wore on. Or I guess that Bundy will be riding a bus and learning pro ball for the first time. Etc. etc.

I guess everyone just wants to see him up in AA or the pros. Most of these analysts are the same ones criticizing Detroit for rushing Porcello. Interesting.

by pedrophile on Apr 12, 2025 2:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I think you missed the key phrase:

“but based on ability and readiness for the challenge”

by gore51 on Apr 12, 2025 2:27 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

how well will that "ability and readiness for the challenge" work

when he is going every 5th day with a tired arm, acclimating to life on the road, and attempting to make changes in his game.

by pedrophile on Apr 12, 2025 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

you can't compare the two at all

Porcello had shown terrible strikeout ability everywhere despite the fact that everyone was talking about how good his stuff was

that screams an inability to command supposedly really good stuff

you don’t promote someone who can’t command their stuff…they’ll just get torched at the next level, and that would probably have very bad consequences on their psyche/thought process when it comes to how to pitch towards hitters

Bundy hasn’t shown this problem at all….he can clearly command his stuff and it’s showing up in absurd strikeout totals

by blue bulldog on Apr 13, 2025 1:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Its two starts and there are no scouting reports circulating yet

I assume Bundy will continue to dominate.

I guess I just don’t see the need to challenge a player based on the competition level if the organization is challenging the player in other ways. For example the first couple weeks getting his feet wet and getting used to life on the road. And then they might even be working on subtle mechanics, I don’t know.

by pedrophile on Apr 13, 2025 2:32 AM EDT up reply actions

+1

I agree with you totally. I also think that young pitchers DO learn something by pitching somewhere where things work, by havibng sucess. I also think there dioes reach a point where they need to be challenged but, there is nmothing wrong with letting him get his feet wet and, dominate, for a bit

Some notes

For the night 51 pitches, 33 strikes. 4GB, 1FB, 2LD, 1 bunt. Really struggled to hit his spots in the first, needing 28 pitches and giving up the two liners and the two runs. Settled down in the 2nd, and was really good in the third, when his slider came around big time and he got some swings and misses (as well as at least one called strike) and 2 swinging K. Would have liked to see if this would have held for a 4th inning.

In all generated 8 swinging strikes on 27 swings by my count

by kyuss94 on Apr 11, 2025 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

how so?

He had a sub-.750 OPS last year, has started the year on a hot streak, and that makes everybody look dumb?

I think the general consensus was that he was going to be a decent bat and a below-average to average defender at positions where if you’re not getting a very good bat, you want a very good glove.

by mrkupe on Apr 11, 2025 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

not a "decent bat"

i think most people thought that he’s be a VERY good bat. but he has little speed and his power is “only” in the 12-15 per year variety. on top of the fact that his Defense is horrid, makes for a pretty meh overall player.

by JoelGuzman'sScout on Apr 12, 2025 2:02 AM EDT up reply actions

my point is

If he’s a 12-15 HR hitter, that’s not a “very good bat”, especially given his position.

by mrkupe on Apr 12, 2025 3:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Power

I think JD could easily eclipse 25 homers in his best years. I’ve watched every game he’s played in an Astros uniform and he has hit some mammoth homers. There’s a lot of pop there and I think 12-15 is reaaally understating it.

by kyuss94 on Apr 12, 2025 8:43 AM EDT via Android app up reply actions

Yeah

It remains to be seen, but I think 20-25 HR with a .300 avg and a .350 OBP would be pretty awesome, and I think attainable. If you can lock that up as a controllable OF for a few years, that’s great. Not franchise, but awesome from an org’s perspective.

Pirates really need to start upgrading their prospects for the infield. They’ve got enough OFs and P’s for the future.

But there’s no reason to do that just yet. They have tons of potential in the OF and in regards to pitching, but it’s a year maybe two away from being really concrete. Plus, rather than try and find prospects - since the prospects will be needed here soon, the only feasible way to do that is via trade or a early round college pick; Bedard, Hanrahan are decent trade chips, but nothing amazing - I think they should go on the “offensive” here in a few years when more pieces are in place and fill in the remaining puzzle with young guys who are either major league ready or are already producing in the major leagues. Just gotta wait a year or two to ensure which pieces are in place and which pieces are missing.

by blue bulldog on Apr 13, 2025 1:23 AM EDT up reply actions

re: slider

he said he ditched it because he was afraid it wore on his elbow and he was tiring quicker in starts and as the season went along. i agree it sure looked like he was throwing a slider-type breaking ball in the AZ start, though. still not worried, how many more times are we gonna read the “WHAT’S WRONG WITH LINCECUM??” article before he comes back to reel off 2 straight months of unhittable stuff? his velocity has been down for 3 years, definitely not worried about that. he adds/takes off from the FB when he needs it. he was all over the place in his first two starts this season. once all of the pistons are firing off in succession like a well-oiled machine with that motion, he’ll be back.

by jwa1417 on Apr 13, 2025 2:13 AM EDT up reply actions

the fact he is worried it wore on his elbow

the season after his highest usage of his slider is worrisome. It was his go to pitch last year and he ditches it. And you think my concern is just “WHATS WRONG WITH LINCECUM”?

Sorry, but something like this is concerning. I’m not worried about his mechanics, or that he is small, etc. But when a pitcher drops his go to pitch before the season even starts is definitely news.

by pedrophile on Apr 13, 2025 2:28 AM EDT up reply actions

he's only two years away from free agency now

and he’s scrapping a pitch because he’s worried about overusage of a pitch that has been regarded as a dangerous pitch for health reasons

this seems plausible to me

there’s nothing wrong with being risk averse if your future earning potential two years from now is like $150 million if you stay healthy, but around $20 million or something like that if you get injured

The swinging strikes are good news.

When I saw him in spring training against the Rangers everything was hit squared up but right at people. Late sink on a 92 mph 2 seamer. Good command. I don’t think he’ll be anything special, but he’ll make a good 4th starter.

by padmadfanman on Apr 12, 2025 1:52 AM EDT up reply actions

4th starter?

As long as he effectively mixes his pitches and his location (a part of his game which is still a work in progress), he’s golden. and will be much better than a No. 4 starter.

by mrkupe on Apr 12, 2025 3:09 AM EDT up reply actions

#2 if things work out otherwise see him as a #3 starter. Which should be in the 35 range of prospects.

http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/2012/04/scouting-reports-performance-converge-for-casey-kelly/

It’s surprising how analysts labelled him a TOR back when the hype machine was rolling and now have him at the edge of the top 100 because he didn’t advance quickly.

by pedrophile on Apr 12, 2025 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions

He'll flourish...

…in the pitchers paradise called San Diego. Definitely 4th with the possibility of moving up to 3rd in a year or two. I see him as a real innings-eater.

by rblythepittsteel on Apr 12, 2025 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

I was originally going to say he'll make a decent 3rd starter or very good 4th starter.

In any case, I’ve backed off the TOR expectations of him. I really like the quicker windup and delivery he’s showing. I think maybe his slow and lazy delivery was giving the batters too good a look, hence the high H/9.

If he finally starts putting up good numbers I’ll revise my opinion. But as it stands now I like John’s view. He’ll be a solid innings eater.

by padmadfanman on Apr 12, 2025 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

the faster tempo is a consistency thing

His move to the 1B side of the rubber gave him late break on his fastball. Before it was flat. And yeah, it seemed the hitters saw it well. Which might have been the tempo as well.

Personally I think you are going about it backwards waiting for the stats. His stuff has been improving by leaps and bounds. He was very raw to pitching. Every year there has been consistent growth in his ability.

The numbers just make one warm and fuzzy about the process. Don’t lose sight that it’s the process that’s important.

by pedrophile on Apr 12, 2025 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions

well put pedro!

I trust the scouting reports more than the numbers, but I believe with the stuff ticking up across the board, the numbers are gonna be there. He has with out a doubt front of the rotation potential and a solid floor.

I have been beating his drum for awhile now, as you and a very few others have and I fully expect we will have company soon.

by St.Steve on Apr 12, 2025 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Mrkupe and some of the bullpen banter boys as well

I think Kelly could put up Ian Kennedy numbers, if all goes well of course, and look like a TOR. Just not sure he actually will be that. I guess what I’m saying is his park will help him to get the numbers but I don’t see the dominance needed for a true TOR. It’s possible, I just don’t see it likely. I’m thinking #2 starter. But then again I haven’t seen him pitch this year. I guess I don’t want to get too hyped yet.

Honestly, maybe I am misinterpreting but the report is that Rendon is out 2 months with the fracture. Do guys usually take longer than that to come back from a sprain?

my 2 cents

Sprains can take a very long time depending on the severity. Ankle sprains are typically in the joint, ie ligament/tendon. And very rarely do these athletes go to a full boot cast to alleviate the stress. Ankle injuries can last years. I would be surprised if this injury wasn’t caused because of overusage because of weakness in his other injury. Compensation.

With fractures you can obviously have large or small fractures. But another aspect of fractures is the shape. Very even breaks dont heal as well. And then there is the microfracture surgery.

Regardless this doesn't sound good for Rendon

I wasn’t surprised when he fell in the draft due to injury concerns and I am less surprised now. He could be a great player but I have a hunch he is one of those guys who always gets hurt.

Definitely not good

Will his ankles ever be ok? I realize he was running fine and apparently without discomfort. But baseball is a long season and I’m not convinced they will hold up to a full season. And it’s not like 1B is that much easier on the ankles.

DH?

He had problems with his other ankle. And then was “supposedly” healthy and there were plans for him to play in the fall, which were cancelled. Then he injures his other ankle badly running the bases.

I’m concerned that the previous injury either didn’t fully heal, or that while it wasn’t healed he did lasting damage to his other ankle by overcompensating. This is exactly what Griffey did with his knees.

When you combine that with the shoulder injury it is even scarier

You in for catching a Jays game this year? Dewey and I are dying to hit up the Rogers Centre. Also, I have a friend in the front office who can give us a tour of the park and take us to the broadcast booth, behind the scenes, etc.

Had a great start. Tho I can’t find his actual line anywhere.

Austin Wood

I guess people forgot to mention the HBP, the ball thrown behind a batter, or the three or four balls bounced before home plate. On fastballs that is.

Unfortunately I didn't

I went by a report from Halos Heaven.

What is interesting is he hasn’t faced a lefty yet. I’m seeing comparisons to Hellweg for both velocity and lack of command. From what I’ve read at times his command is quite good and then at times it totally disappears.

What’s the big deal?

It was him or Chris Christie
