A.J. Ellis retrospective?

Been looking everywhere for stuff on this guy… Excellent walk rates at every level, good defense apparently. Where did he come from?

"Hold Your Horses"

We are always talking up guys here, how about something looking at guys who are drawing lots of attention, but still have some serious red flags for which people may want to think twice about pouncing on them…

That’s a cool suggestion, and not just because I can still hear my my mom in Boston still saying “Hold ya hosses” to me when I was young.

Duh, no doy.

Agreed

I immediately thought of something like this, too, after reading about Cozart this past week. Something along the lines of a “hype machine meter,” taking a look at those prospects either ignored by the machine or built up too much.

A tangent to this (albeit very difficult one to pursue, I’d imagine) would be to isolate any of the background reason(s) why some players are over or under-hyped. For instance, how is it that Red Sox or Yankee prospects tend to be over-hyped.

by AGuinness on Apr 10, 2026 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Tangential to this tangent

This may not be a background reason, so much as a question of the separation between what we see and what we dream. Regarding under-hyped players, I’m always interested in the deflation in most prospect lists of guys like Kolten Wong that have limited projectability but polished baseball skills across the board. Going into last season, I listened to some analysts caution that there wasn’t much room left for Jurickson Profar to improve, and I bought into his purported lack of projectability as a reason to underrate him. I’d love to see a list of the guys with the highest floors that could still be stars despite their lack of jaw-dropping tools.

Had already posted it at the previous suggestion thred...

but here it goes again.

“You’ve stated several times that along he years you’ve gained some experience and knowledge, refined your evaluation skills and generally have some different views on prospects. Relievers don’t get that high of a grade, K/BB is more of a concern, etc…

How about doing a recap of players or crops that you would have evaluated in a different way had that same player(s) came at this time. Not hindsight, just looking at for instance the 2002 prospects sample and doing the top 20, with today’s sense of things.

I like this idea

Breakout Players

Periodically, a feature on prospects who are showing signs of breaking out.

I like the "guess the prospect/player" articles

havent seen a lot of those lately..

"On [umpire] Jeff Kellogg taking a foul tip to the groin: ‘Two balls, one strike.’"

by James Westfall on Apr 10, 2026 2:41 PM EDT reply actions

How about something like a "No longer a prospect" type of articles every month?

The write up for injured pitchers would be dull, but reading about former top 100 guys who hit a wall and theories on why.

by FrancoTAU on Apr 10, 2026 2:43 PM EDT reply actions

To piggyback on that

Maybe highlight prospects that have fallen on hard times but maybe a change of position or scenery could suit them well

Atlanta sports have singlehandedly crushed my soul.

Crystal Ball

I realize they aren’t exactly scientific but, I like seeing youir analysis of a young player in baseball card form John. I just think they are fun.

I also completely understand how you have used CBs in the past, throwing out one possible outcome of a prospect’s future to spark opinions on the player but, I think you could throw one or two out as pure prediction and, it would be just as interesting.

An idea would be to...

Either make a list of about 8 prospects that there fantasy value could be much higher than there real value and make a list of 8 prospects that there real value could be higher than fantasy value or if you want to make it longer make a top 120 list of fantasy prospects and compare it to your first list of prospects…. Maybe something like this…

33. Billy Hamilton ss cin Then put where he was in the first list.

love this idea

might not be up John’s alley, but it is very interesting because many of us play fantasy and values often tie in with leagues, positional openings and especially home parks.

Hypothetical prospect(s)-for-prospect(s) deals

Two teams, each lacking depth at a certain area in the system, make a deal. Say the Cubs are lacking in closer prospects (no idea if this is true - just a hypothetical), while TEX is lacking in near-ready C prospects. What would be a fair trade between them? Scheppers and Deglan for W. Castro? I have no idea if that’s fair - just an example. Fun to think of stud-prospect-for-stud-prospect deals.

SUPER early

But a 2013 top 10 hitter and pitchers list could be fun to read. Really would let you say what guys could really jump before they start producing this year.

Community Member of the Week

Pick an infamous member of the community (i.e. Mrkupe, Bravesin07, Casejud, Alskor, etc) and do a mock writeup of what they would be like as a baseball player. It would be totally tongue in cheek but could be fun for the community and definitely lighten the mood.

Scout's view of Alen Hanson

Hanson had a fine start to his 2011 season before fading in the second half of the year. Now, he’s again pounding the ball in the SAL. Is he a legitimate prospect?

by steve_z on Apr 10, 2026 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

Not John

but yeah, he’s legit. He’s crazy athletic, drives the ball well, is a good fielder, runs well and should be able to stick at SS. He’s young and raw and his production so far this year is no more a reason to tout his ability than Josh Bell’s struggles are a reason to call him a bust (SSS). At this point, he’s a guy worth keeping an eye on.

Saw a mock where it listed

Courtney HAwkins as a possibilty for 1st overall. Do you know if the Astros are looking to save money with a pick like that? I mean I like him but not at #1.

Best Tools/Skills

I’d love to see a list of the the players you think best demonstrate each of the five tools, or your seven skills. Maybe a top ten for each skill/tool. Thanks John!

novel idea

how about a list of old guys that are no longer prospects, say over 26 or 27, that you think still have shots at contributing

Weekly top 120 Updates!

Kidding, kidding. Monthly might be fun but certainly a pain come draft time, especially considering the signing period.

How about a "Minor 'League' of the Week"?

I’d find it interesting if you would choose a minor league (eg: Carolina League, NY/Penn League, MIdwest League, PCL, etc.) each week and just give your opinions on whatever players/topics in that league jump out at you.

You could write updates on how the 2 or 3 Top Prospects in the league are doing, 2 or 3 players who are raising their stock, and 2 or 3 players who are stagnant or regressing.

With roughly 25 weeks during the season, that would work out to a 1st half and 2nd half snapshot of each league - would be fun to see how things change, re-evaluate 1st half analysis, etc. (2 AAA, 3 AA, 3 HiA, 4 LoA/SS = 12 Leagues). It would leave out the Rookie Leagues though.

Not sure if that jives with the amount of research you currently undertake or if it would take more extra time than its worth. I would be interested to get a quick snapshot throughout the season of the various leagues and players across the board.
