Good pitchability with above average but not elite stuff

4 solid pitches with a future plus curve and maybe change. average fastball and slider. good command being able to throw strikes with all 4 pitches and is very smart and will likely dissect high A hitters. Real test comes at AA

Thoughts on

Villanueva and Herrera? Took a flier on both late in my draft, Herrera on a tip that he looked great in ST and Villanueva because I think he may have more physical projection.

Villanueva

good defensive 3B with above average power and speed. blocked in TX by Olt and Beltre.

here’s Parks on Herrera

box score

Says he’s thrown 21 pitches, all for strikes.

That isn’t accurate, is it?

by rdf8585 on Apr 6, 2026 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

No

MILB Box scores (except for AAA) assume all walks are 4 straight balls, all Ks are 3 straight strikes, and all BIP outs are 1 strike.

by dkdc on Apr 6, 2026 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Re:

This can’t be totally true. The box score for Campos has him throwing 49 pitches / 30 for strikes.

by Dfarth on Apr 6, 2026 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Interested in this as well

Is it really that inaccurate for the lower levels?

by The_Bunk on Apr 6, 2026 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I think this is just the case for A+and lower

The AA games I have seen are fine. It’s the same thing they do for Spring Training games, presumably because they don’t bother with a stringer

by MjwW on Apr 6, 2026 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Right

But, still, Campos is in Low-A and has it. I think the determining factor is whether or not they have “GameTracker.”

by Dfarth on Apr 6, 2026 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Looks like they have Gameday available for that game

So they have full pitch charting.

No Gameday equals made up pitch counts. Most of the lower level games don’t have Gameday.

Cubs

Nice matchup in AA - Trey McNutt vs. Ethan Martin.

So far, both are looking solid - 4 shutout from Ethan (but 75 pitches), with 6 K’s, and McNutt has 3 shutout (but only one K). Would be curious to hear how McNutt’s breaking ball is looking.

In Peoria, Patrick Francescon is mowing through Beloit. 4 shutout, 1 h, 8 K’s. He’s a nice sleeper arm, but he is an older arm (23), with an average fastball, but a plus change (decent slider). I could see him move up quick, if an opening is there, but his future might not be as a starter.

Cole has a live fastball, mostly sitting 92-94. His command was pretty sharp. Off speed stuff didn’t look spectacular. Liriano and Spangenberg each hit a bomb that likely would have gone out if the ball was carrying any better than it was.

Not a big prospect per se, but a swell line:

For some reason I don't see this guying being the hitter people expect

He will be good (.290, 15-18 HR) but nowhere need the Arod comp that people throw around.

I wonder who is comparing him to A-Rod.

I read some Arod comparisons during draft time

I’m guessing that’s what Billy is referring to.

by John Black on Apr 7, 2026 1:35 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I have read many people on this site make the comp.

They are....

Because he’s of Dominican background and from Miami thats where it ends. Doesn’t mean he’s not a great prospect though.

.290, 15-18 HR from a SS is all-star level and even more.

by DominicanDandy on Apr 7, 2026 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Well if they are making it because he is Domincan and from Miami that is just dumb and narrow minded

I think his batting line will be good but definitely not great when he is moved off of SS.

well

The ARod comps where his CEILING and very few players ever reach their ceiling (especially HS short stops). However, even if he gets most of the way there I expect to see him have a Kinsler-esque career (and even move to 2B, too).

But, again, that’s just me.

by JoelGuzman'sScout on Apr 7, 2026 6:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Arod comps are not his ceiling.

Even his absolute upside is nowhere near that. People need to go look at tape of Arod when he broke into the bigs to see just how special he was.

Most folks on this site are very new to following prospects

It is as simple as that. Perspective takes some time to develop. If you don’t know any better, every SS has an ARod ceiling…

Saw it in person

That was an absolute shot. I barely was able to stand up and cheer by the time it was gone. Most impressive homer I’ve seen at the Coliseum since Frank Thomas was here.

Couple of other lesser New Hampshire known guys

A.J. Jimenez: 0-4, BB, K, SB
Mike McDade: 3-4, 2B
McDade was originally ticketed for AAA Las Vegas, but the Jays wanted both Cooper and McDade playing 1B everyday (as opposed to splitting 1B/DH duties) so he got sent back

That's not his actual pitch count

Casey Kelly AAA debut

78 pitches, 55 strikes

8 GO, 2 FO

he's starting to harness his stuff

I expect an increase in Ks. Combine that with the groundballs and we have ourselves and excellent pitching prospect.

by John Black on Apr 7, 2026 1:31 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

agree

other than klaw, he has been dropping in ranks the last two years

by jwa1417 on Apr 7, 2026 1:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I think I could've stated my point more clearly

The drops he experienced in rankings were founded on faulty reasoning. Before reaching AA, he had about as much pitching experience as a guy entering full season ball from a short season league - you basically have to give him a two year mulligan there before you can even really look at his numbers, just because he needs time to actually learn how to pitch, how to pace himself through a season, refine his approach, etc. Meanwhile, during that time, his pure stuff has gone through the roof.

Potential for injury aside, it’s really hard to see him not being at least a decent workhorse starting pitcher. There is a pretty good chance that he ends up being more than that.

by mrkupe on Apr 7, 2026 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions

i agree with you on everything you've said here, Kelly is under-appreciated.

doesn’t change the fact that his stock has dropped among some prospect writers/rankers…
BA: 2010: #24, 2011: #31, 2012: #76
KG: 2010: #30, 2011: #48, 2012: #78
KL: 2010: #18, 2011: #19, 2012: #32
john had him as the #22 pitcher in 2010, #40 pitcher in 2011, and he’s now the #102 prospect overall this season, which is up 10 spots from his original ranking this offseason of 112. the haterade is flowing on mr. kelly.

people just dont get it with ck

He is an excellent pitching prospect, and yet somehow does not appear in John’s top 100, and many other people are way too low on him and will look foolish for it.

Other Yankees

Mason Williams: 2 for 4 with 2 doubles
Solid performance, and he also had a diving catch in centerfield. He had a triple last night but the game was rained out

Dellin Betances: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 6 SO, 1 BB
The walk total is always Betances’ biggest problem, so it’s good to see him keep them under control

Just wanted to say

I love these threads, great to see them back.

Thanks to everyone posting updates!

by oplaid on Apr 7, 2026 1:26 AM EDT reply actions

I know some people love them, but they pretty much drive me away until they are done with.

There wasn’t even much discussion going on in them this year, which makes them nigh worthless to me.

by PissedMick on Apr 7, 2026 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Why is it a competition...

. between these threads and the CP lists? There were no minor league games to report on guys. You guys are obviously entitled to your opinion but, I enjoyed the lists for the first half of them or so. Then I lost some interest because I like future and current major league ballplayers more than I like minor league ones.

Oh, and to Mick … there was plenty of discussion in the threads and, if there wasn’t, it was because people who have lots of good things to say, didn’t participate :)

Travis d'Arnaud

1-4, BB, K, SB
Very patient and showing a good in the first couple games…has taken 23/36 pitches, of which 19 were balls and only 4 called strikes. Some contact problems though, whiffed on 5 of 13 swings, including a couple really bad swingd according to radio broadcast. All very SSS of course.

George Springer

2 more hits last night. Looks like he’s going to put up some NUMBERS in Lancaster, I’m really going to enjoy watching him and Telvin Nash (0/2, 2 BB, 0 K) hit 3-4 in that lineup.
