MiLB April 10, 2012
Today's pitching starts are fronted by Minor League Ball's favorite homegrown talent, Matt Moore, all grown up and taking the hill against the revamped DET offense. How many of us will call up Moore from our minor league rosters if he dominates the game today?
Also taking the hill:
(MLB - Matt Moore!)
AAA- Matt Harvey, Wily Peralta, Christian Friedrich, Garret Richards
A+ - Taylor Jungmann, Zach Lee, Seth "The Enigma" Blair
Mex: Esteban Yan (shout-out for Cardinals fans)
Meanwhile, hitters off to notable starts at AA:
Nick Franklin - still at SS, 1.2 OPS
Jean Segura: still at SS, .794 OPS
Manny Machado - Still at SS, 1.081 OPS, already two homers, I don't see the problem with A-Rod comps!
Matt Davidson - 1.095 OPS, 5/4 BB/K, .412 BA, nice to see him starting this way while now at 3B full time
Jeff Bianchi - SS, .976 OPS
Wong: 2B, 1.400+ OPS, 4/3 BB/K
Arenado: 3B, 1.215 OPS
Myers: .890 OPS, but a 1/8 BB/K ratio (I'm not too worried about this)
Robbie Grossman - Still in CF, .833 OPS
Aaron Hicks - .597 OPS

Should only be in AA for one start. He’s scheduled to be promoted to take the open spot in the Rockie(y?) rotation on April 15th I believe.
by Matt0330 on Apr 10, 2026 10:43 AM EDT reply actions
Yep, that's accurate
The Rockies beat writer for the Denver Post has also reported that he’ll be on a strict 70-pitch cap. They say he wasn’t started in the majors for the sake of limiting his innings, so I’m not sure how this accomplishes that, even if he’s on a pitch count…

Rudy Can't Fail
Well, not a great start so far I guess but do any of the Pirates faithful still have any real hopes for this kid? He ran into some resistance last year but he’s also barely 24 & should have some sort of comfort level this time around in the IL.
by Matt0330 on Apr 11, 2025 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions
Ya there are hopes for the kid
It’s back of the rotation hopes, instead of the lofty #2 and #3 projections people seemed want to throw out two years ago and early last year, but it’ll be fine.
My hopes for the rotation are that between Brad Lincoln, Jeff Locke, Rudy Owens, Kyle McPherson, Justin Wilson, and then a slew of guys at Low-A and High-A (Zach Von Rosenberg, Nick Kingham, Colton Cain to name a few) the Pirates can find 2 guys to be their #4 and #5 starters in 2013/14 on.
Then Cole and Taillon can be the #1 and #2 (not saying even that they will be good enough to be a true #1 and true #2 but that that will be their role). That leaves the #3 spot, which could be filled via trade (a Mat Latos, Trevor Cahill, Gio Gonzalez type trade), a prospect stepping up, or (crosses fingers) via the draft. I would love to add Kevin Gausman in this year’s draft.

Fair enough
Yeah, I think that your wishes regarding the future back end of the staff seem fairly reasonable & I did see Cain pich a couple years back & he had that brawny innings eater sort of look even then for what that’s worth (not a lot probably, ha).
Also, yeah, a polished college pitcher with some upside would make some sense for your boys with the eighth (?) pick this summer. Whatever occurs, it’s hard not to be excited about the duo in the Florida State League though.

Is McDonald that bad? No reason to get so hung up on prospects that we forget about him. He and Morton could be pretty good in two of the 3-4 spots in a rotation.

by Winter'sComing on Apr 10, 2026 11:39 AM EDT reply actions
will he?
I like him an awful lot, but I’m going to be watching how his fast rise affects his plate discipline. I have a feeling that this year’s top prospect crop is going to be noticeably weaker than that seen in most years, but that would be the one thing that would throw me off him at the very top.

Duh, no doy.
by Mike Kaluk on Apr 10, 2026 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions
not really, to me at least
Does it seem that way to you? You’ve got a lukewarm draft, a lot of guys at the top who are going to lose their eligibility, and the next tier is for the most part not quite as impressive.
by mrkupe on Apr 10, 2026 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions
I hear you
But I could see either Nimmo or Swihart jumping to the top 15 with big season…like the Big Trout Run of 2011 when he went from #85 to #2! Then they’d be the talk of the town. But it’s going to be strange without Harper hanging over everyone. Maybe we’ve gotten used to his caliber at the top, when really he’s an outlier historically.
Duh, no doy.
by Mike Kaluk on Apr 10, 2026 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm not sure that he's that much of an outlier
He was 18 and somewhere between 1-3 last year. Trout was 19 and No. 1 for me the year before. Heyward 19 and No. 1 the year before that.

This is beginning of next year not mid-season right?
I know you gave 10 guys for 10 spots, but I could also see Buxton or Giolito being in that top 10. If Giolito can get healthy, either can grab some helium going into the draft and achieve that type of top 10 status, especially considering how “weak” the top tier will be next year.
by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Apr 10, 2026 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Hadn't considered the draftees
….but maybe one of those guys could sneak in there depending on how the rest of the top 10 do this year in MiLB. Tough to see Giolito in my opinion. Even Bundy wasn’t a top 10 and I think most would give the edge to Bundy at the same age. But you’re right that it’s a “weaker” top 10 than Bundy fought. Would be interesting to see - Buxton has really shot up to the top of the lists - which is funny since he’s being pitched around all year!
Duh, no doy.
by Mike Kaluk on Apr 10, 2026 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions
It's deifnitely a weaker top 10
and personally I like Giolito better than Bundy. Granted I’m just a lone idiot who still knows very little about baseball, so take that as you will.
I just have a feeling someone will sneak on. Last year the #1 guy got “weaker” down the stretch (Cole’s changeup disappeared and Rendon had the injury concerns); I just have a feeling the opposite will happen this year.

It will be interesting to see how aggressive the Cards are with him. Greene/Descalso won’t impress anyone at 2b for the big club and with a veteran (and aging) ML club they might push Wong to the majors sooner rather than later.
And before anyone points out my hypocrisy after saying the Orioles shouldn’t do the same with Machado I want to point out that Wong played D1 college baseball for three years and the teams are in vastly different places.

I think that oblique injury set him back a little. But Molina was smart about their game plan. It was very cold out. It was almost all fastballs, the ball wasn’t carrying and the hands had to hurt when making poor contact. Plus it’s hard to get a good grip in that cold. Props to Porcello for spin ing a lot of nice breaking balls in those conditions.

Fantasy advice requested: Pomeranz or Bauer
My 5×5 auction league drafts this Saturday – NL only. I have 1st pick the in reserve draft (like a minor league draft). I can take Pomeranz who starts on Sunday and get his stats right away. Or, take Bauer and have to wait for him. Sigh. Not sure who to take. Thoughts?

by tmannino on Apr 11, 2025 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions
depends
If it’s a redraft or shallow keeper pool I’m taking Pom, as there are no guarantees when Bauer gets up (or if he stays up). Pom might not have the upside, but by the time Bauer does get up Pom could be settled down and getting you stats.
Dynasty style league I’m taking Bauer’s upside (and non-Coors home park) for the long term.

Pom
I’d rock him. Coors isn’t as bad as it seems and the other fields/offenses in the NL West are nice. Pom also seems to be steadily improving as well - word is he added some cut to his fastball and the results have helped him succeed at the MLB level. I like Bauer a lot, but go with Pom for now.

Telvin Nash, Ladies and Gentlemen!
ANOTHER homer in his first AB tonight, off of Zach Lee, no less! That gives him 4, through 5 games and one PA in the 6th. He’s also hitting .381 and not striking out at an alarming rate. though he still needs work there.
Has he the most power of anyone not named Bryce currently in the minor leagues? I don’t think that’s a crazy statement. Not until we get real looks at Guzman and Vogelbach, at least. I’m sure I’m forgetting someone, but Nash has to be up there.
by kyuss94 on Apr 10, 2026 10:47 PM EDT reply actions
addendum
Through the start of the season, Nash has 21 total bases (4 homers, a double and 3 singles), has walked three times, and has only struck out 3 times. That gives him an astonishing triple slash of .381/.458/1.000. Yes, I know that won’t keep up, but he’s been a favorite of mine since before he was drafted and I was really excited that the Astros nabbed him. It’s awesome to see him breaking out like this.

I think it's best to give him through May in the Cal
He’s just turned 21 years old, remember, and has had a couple freak injuries. He’s probably fully healthy for the first time since he was drafted and it’d be good for him to get his confidence and up and let him rake for awhile before challenging him like that. If he keeps up this contact rate though, it might be time for him to make the leap.

I think that is a bit much to say at the moment if you're basing it on production
For all we know, it could be a fortuitous combination of a hot streak and favorable conditions.
Last I saw, Nash’s future power graded at somewhere between 65 and 70.
by mrkupe on Apr 11, 2025 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions
If it's 70, that's still right up there among the best though.
We already knew Nash has legit power for the 1B position though. The question is if he’ll hit. His 3 strikeouts in 27 plate appearances so far are a promising sign, but it’s still early.

A little premature
Lots of line drives so far, but he’s aslo swinging and missing quite a bit and not doing a good job or telling balls from strikes

Good info MjwW
Do you watch the games in Vegas? I don’t have much patience for the camera placement.

No
I listen to the online radio broadcast when I can, and I pull some relevent info from Gameday into an Excel spreadsheet to make it easier to track some of this stuff over time (SwSt, batted ball types). Over at BBB there’s a couple guys who watch some of the broadcasts so I get some info there to which is useful (hard v. soft liners, etc)

not this year...
Or, never say never, but would be shocking if he could. 3 errors so far, which is really not so surprising, I’d expect at least a rough half season given how little he’s played at 3B. The tale will be in the scouts’ eyes as to whether or not he’s showing the ability and just needs reps, or….doesn’t have it. Sure would be a nice bat there at 3B.
