Rating last year's rookies-Community Prospect #21
Mike Minor becomes the fourth Atlanta Brave rookie in the top 20 of our list. Our winners so far include:
1. Brett Lawrie, 3b Toronto Blue Jays (51%)
2, Eric Hosmer, 1b Kansas City Royals (57%)
3. Michael Pineda, P Seattle Mariners (38%)
4. Dustin Ackley, 2b Seattle Mariners (41%)

10. Mike Moustakas, 3b Kansas City Royals (38%)
11. Domonic Brown, of Philadelphia Phillies (32%) (70% runoff)
12. Jason Kipnis, 2b Cleveland Indians 29%
13. Cory Luebke, P San Diego Padres 19% (59% runoff)

17. Aroldis Chapman, P Cincinnati Reds 56%
18. Wilson Ramos, C Washington Nationals 38%
19. Chris Sale, P Chicago White Sox 26%
20. Mike Minor, P Atlanta Braves 40%
The voting breakdown after Minor was: Salvador Perez 27%, Mark Trumbo 10%, Henderson Alvarez 10%, Lucas Duda 10%, JD Martinez 3%, Danny Duffy, Dayan Viciedo, Ivan Nova and Alex Cobb all got 0%.
I'm going to keep the standard at 4%, so JD Martinez, Danny Duffy, Dayan Viciedo, Ivan Nova and Alex Cobb are all temporarily dropped.. Starting this round, players who are dropped with no votes in a round probably won't return to the ballot again unless they receive multiple votes by write in.
We'll bring back Jordan Walden, Allen Craig, Jemile Weeks and Vance Worley this round.
In rotation: Kyle Drabek 0% (round 17), Ben Revere 0% (round 17), Mike Carp 0% (round 17), Josh Collmenter 0% (round 18, Kenley Jansen 0% (round 18), Aaron Crow 0% (round 18), Zach Britton 3% (round 19), Jose Altuve 0% (round 19), Juan Nicasio 0% (round 19), JD Martinez 0% (round 20), Danny Duffy 0% (round 20), Dayan Viciedo 0% (round 20), Ivan Nova 0% (round 20), Alex Cobb 0% (round 20)
We'll give Lonnie Chisenhall his first time on the ballot this round, leaving as possible future testers:
Jordan Lyles, Jerry Sands, Dee Gordon, Craig Gentry, Al Alberquerque, Tyler Chatwood, Kyle Seager, Eric Thames and Greg Holland.
As always voting is by +1 and there are places below to suggest testers or vote for players not currently on the ballot. As I am planning on taking this out to 25 rounds and then stopping, there is no guarantee that everyone on the testers list will get a chance to be on the ballot. So, if you think that one of the players on the testers list particularly deserves to be on the ballot you can note that below. I am currently thinking of Dee Gordon as next round's tester, but am open to suggestion.
So who is your number 21 prospect for future performance among last year's rookies?

Ivan Nova
I suppose that I haven’t voted for him either, but I still find the lack of love for Ivan Nova a bit interesting. Obviously, I’m not allowed to comment on win loss record around here, but he certainly fit right into the Yankees rotation and if he can continue to pitch at close to the level last year he is going too accumulate some numbers. 3.6 WAR and 119 ERA+ on the other hand are more legitimate plus marks for him.
Answering my own question I suppose it is the low strikeouts and the not unrelated FIP somewhat higher than his ERA at 4.01 (although that isn’t even half bad), but if he is left off the list he may be one who (not completely unlike Brett Gardner) manages to string together a significant career despite the lack of some of the markers we usually look for.

It's not exact
However, I feel the same way about Mark Trumbo & Vance Worley (the two I’ve gone back & forth on the last few rounds) as you seem to about Ivan Nova in a broad sense. There is something (or some things) about these guys that holds them back in the eyes of many (eg - K rate with Nova, BB % with Trumbo, lack of perceived upside with Worley), but I think they’re pretty safe bets to be major league contributors of some type.
I went with Trumbo because I believe in the power. Higher ISO in 2011 than Adrian Gonzalez, Joey Votto & Paul Konerko in the same campaign & I think he’s capable of some slight improvement (which could possibly put him on par with seasons such as those posted by teammate Kendrys Morales in 2009 & the truncated one in 2010).

Trumbo
in games I’ve seen, its comical how many times Trumbo worked into three ball counts and swung at the next pitch regardless of location. It paid off a couple of times with the HR but many times he drilled the low and away slider right into the ground for an easy out. I think the potential for walks is there, but the will/coaching philosophy is not. So I voted Duda lol.

People are actually voting for Trumbo, and over guys like Perez and Weeks?
Perez should clearly be the next guy on the list, IMO. 127 wRC+ last season as a 21-year-old catcher, and a young 21 at that. Even assuming some BABIP regression, he still looks like at least an average hitter already, with lots of room still to grow. Considering how rare a catcher with good D and a good bat comes along, I don’t see how people could prefer a slow 1B with an OBP under .300.

I was about to type this so, yeah, I agree. I even like Trumbo but, there are some guys with some real upside still left and Perez actually performed well too - very underrated. I think his teammate Duffy, Weeks and, lil’ Jose Altuve will look funny at the bottom of this list (or off of it) in a few years but, we’ll see I guess.

I agree
I’m actually a big Trumbo fan, it’s fun to root for guys that homer sometimes, and I have touted him as needing a chance for a while. I’m happy he got it, and happy he did well. And he did do well, he had a 113 OPS+ last year. His greatest strength is the absolute single best outcome you can have in baseball, and that’s the home run, so there’s value there. However, there are weaknesses too, which has obviously been touched upon. He’s pretty close to his peak on a standard age curve as well.
If I’m asking myself who I’d want my team to have, with all other variable held constant, it’s not going to be the guy with that skillset. At least not at this point in the game. Give me the catcher who can hit and play D. Give me the mid-rotation lefty starter…etc.
That said, I’ll probably be ready to vote for Trumbo when my next few (3-5, haven’t worked out a list) guys are off the board.

no doubt about that
personally i like Duffy more and think he should have been on a while ago. love his power arsenal from left side. think he’ll end up a #2 quality starter.
