Off Topic Discussion: What is your Favorite Airline?

What is your favorite airline?

Star-divide

I have always been partial to legacy carriers American and United, but I haven't flown them very much in recent years. I usually end up on US Airways, which i despise, or Frontier, which I like a lot, since they have more direct connections and slightly better fares out of Kansas City than American and United these days. I love flying but it is hell on my ears nowadays, and I have to use a direct connection whenever possible.

I hate Delta. I've never used Southwest...their fares are no better out of Kansas City than US Airways or Frontier.

Virgin America

Easy at the airport, good customer service, good on-board amenities, smooth sailing relative to everyone else.

I don't always Fly...

But when I do (2-3 times a year) it’s Southwest for me….for most of the same mentioned with Virgin America….

Bags Die Free?

I’m permanently mad at Southwest. They sheared the wheel off one of our bags, disclaimed liability, offered us a $25 voucher (no), offered us a very crappy substitute bag (no), and then sent us on our way.

They then left a message saying they’d replace our bag. I called twice and left messages accepting this offer, but they never sent it.

This is, of course, an anecdote; maybe others have a better experience. But dealing with SW on this made me angry, and I remain angry.

Westjet

It is a discount Canadian service which has fantastic prices, customer service, and clean flights. All airlines should follow its business model.

Continental/United

I live in Texas, so Continental (now United) is my airline of choice and necessity.I’m Elite Gold on their frequent flyer program. They bump me up to first class on almost every flight, and they do the priority baggage handling, which is helpful. They have good service and are pretty reliable. Second choice is Delta, only because they fly where I have to go, but they suck big time. The planes are ancient and the service is terrible. Worst airline by far is USelessAirways. I will never fly them again.

by tim_l on Dec 4, 2025 11:14 AM EST reply actions

yeah

Yeah I really don’t like US Airways. The flight crews and attendants on the planes are nice enough, but the customer service at the ticketcounter is almost always snarly and rather rude. Delta is even worse and their attendants have a mean streak.

Agreed on both counts

I have flown JetBlue a few times and I was really impress. Especially when it is only $130 round trip from Toronto to Boston!!!!!

Not to mention

US Air has the oldest fleet of all major carriers. I had to fly them this week on a short little connector flight. I swear the plane was from the 60’s and was built for people about a foot shorter than I.

I am a United guy as well (Premier Exec status - so same as you Tim). The changes to the elite status program that are coming in 2012 really piss me off though. My bonus miles on flights will go from 100% to 50% and upgrades will come much less frequently. But at least we still get the economy plus seating.

by guru4u on Dec 4, 2025 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

fleets

I thought American’s fleet was older….lots and lots of MD-80s. Delta has a lot of old planes too.

My flights to/from Phoenix last month were on Airbus 319s that USAirways inherited after they bought out America West airline. Both aircraft were in good shape.

by John Sickels on Dec 4, 2025 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

Fleet Age

Here are some of the average fleet ages according to http://www.airsafe.com/events/airlines/fleetage.htm
12.8 USAirways
14.0 United
15.1 American (but their MD 80/90’s average 20.2)
15.3 Southwest

That proves me wrong!

built for people about a foot shorter than I.

When I was in Eigth grade, I ticked the teacher off so much , she sent me back to Second grade for the afternoon (I wasn’t a bad kid, per se, but I had a lot of issues with authority and I was pretty stubborn about it). I’m a taller than average guy, but would be short by NBA standards and the same was true in grade school. I remember getting to the second grade class and feeling akin to how Buddy Elf must have felt sitting in all those stools made for Bob Newhart. I was Gulliver among the Lilliputins. I learned a lesson that day, and it wasn’t that I should listen to authority, it was that being tall sucks sometimes.

I flew USAir to Dallas the week before Thanksgiving and I was unable to lower the seatback tray, as it hit me in the chest when I opened the latch, my knees were solidly wedged into the seat in front of me and the headrest was pretty much even with my shoulders. That was a pretty miserable flight.

Intl: KLM. They feed you every 20 minutes and have fantastic customer service.

Virgin

Virgin doesn’t fly to/from KC so no experience there for me. I had a very nice experience with Frontier the time I flew with them. Great service.

I’ve never had any problems with American and United. I was almost stranded by a weather cancellation in Detroit once but a United ticket agent performed some magic and got me on a Northwest flight to get home in time. Unfortunately American and United keep cutting their flights out of Kansas City, leaving this market to the suckage of Delta and USAir.

Southwest

No bag fees, you can sit wherever you want and their fares are often cheaper. Plus, I have a more secure feeling w them because their planes are all the same type so their mechanics dont have to deal w different types of planes so the maintenance should be better. And their employees are generally friendlier.

Airlines

I’m out of STL and American has less and less direct flights over the past 2-4 years so I went from almost only flying American to other carriers. In STL we have 2 terminal…one is the main terminal that has all the major airlines besides Southwest and the other is dedicated to Southwest. These days I almost always fly Southwest or Delta though I prefer Southwest. Here is the breakdown:

Southwest:
- They have no regional jets so every jet is a 737…I’m not a huge fan of regional jets as you seem so crapped, tight and the overhead bins are much smaller. Here is the breakdown that makes me want to fly Southwest as much as possible.

- Southwest has no bag fees and everyone else does…these days I almost always have 1 checked bag so looking at overall cost you have to account for that $25 each way extra on other airlines.

- In STL the security lines are typically shorter and much less walking from security to your gate on Southwest because they have a dedicated terminal…aka - you don’t have to get to the airport as early.

- Baggage claim in STL main terminal is BRUTAL. From parking at the gate to bags coming out of baggage claim in the main terminal is usually 25-45 mins…I have never been to any other airport where it is this bad…its amazingly brutal and when all you want to do is go home it pisses you off. In the Southwest terminal baggage claim is much faster.

- A few negatives for Southwest is less food options in their terminal compared to main. They don’t fly to ATL where my sister and one of my best friends lives and I fly there at least twice a year (though in Feb they will FINALLY start flying to ATL…so this will go away soon - YAY!). For some the concept of not being able to get an assigned seat is an issue…every since Southwest went to the line assignment concept this has been very sufficient for me as I usually travel with either myself or my wife…so no big family to worry about sitting together.

So there ya have it…I prefer Southwest and its really not even that close.

As a St. Louisan I agree with pretty much everything in this post.

Flying from the East Terminal (I don’t think it’s called that anymore but I don’t care) with Southwest is so much nicer than the main terminal.

Also, the baggage claim in the main terminal isn’t just slow, it’s also a ridiculous guessing game in my experience. I have literally had flights where some scratchy pre-recorded voice says my bags will be at carousel X, the monitors down at baggage claim “claim” they will be at carousel Y, and they finally show up at carousel Z. I have no idea how the main terminal of our airport is so dysfunctional while still technically being functional.

Jetblue

If you’re flying in/out of NYC regularly, it’s the only way to go. Beautiful new terminal at JFK with way above average food options (w/ the added bonus of avoiding LGA), prices are generally pretty good, they keep the planes spotless, and there’s leg room. #winning

My favorite is Southwest from the amount I use it. However, the most pleasant flying experience I've ever had was British Airways, on a trans-Atlantic flight to and then from Italy

The staff were polite and charming (the accents helped, and the fact they kept calling my wife things like “love”… yes, I know it was not necessarily sincere, it was still nice). We managed to upgrade our seats somehow on the flight to Italy to something better than coach but not first class or anything. Nice amount of space, great service, option to watch something or other on monitors with complimentary headphones. Lots of offers for tea or coffee. Food wasn’t even bad at all.

The return flight was almost as good just in seats that weren’t quite as nice.

The other runner-up is one of the airlines that flies mostly in the Northwest (can’t remember which at the moment). It was either Northwest, Frontier, or Alaska I think. It was during some holiday season and they were offering either a free beer or free wine. I took the beer, and it was a very nice seasonal craft beer of some sort. I want to say a winter/Christmas ale from someone in Washington or Oregon. That was a nice little surprise.

I’ve actually never flown United myself, but there you go. :)

Southwest is my favorite because they seem to go to a lot of extra miles for travelers. After that, they’re pretty much all the same to me … except for Delta. Whenever I have a flight canceled for dumb reasons, and the receptionists are clueless about other options, it’s Delta.

Avianca Airlines in Colombia

In country flights are amazing. free full use of gaming system, movies, drinks. inexpensive. It is basically the perfect airline. Avianca never “cheaps down” on its service. The food is authentic Colombian and pretty solid. Overall, best airline ever.

Lived in Colombia for a while

Avianca didn’t really stand out, though no particular complaints either. My choice is related…

LAN Airlines - I’ve never been to Chile but ended up on this airline flying from Colombia to Peru. I booked the first row in coach but they must have expanded first class because I just ended up in first class, and nobody seemed to say anything about it. Dinner was incredible and included Chilean wine selected by the only “Master Sommelier” in all of South America (I later researched this and found it to be a real thing and true, for what it’s worth).

Southwest

I fly from Boston to Midway, rather than taking Delta or Continental, once a month. Southwest’s gates have their own security checkpoint at Logan, I fly enough to have made A-List for next year, and if I need to check a bag I don’t have to pay for it.

Amtrak

Wish they ran out of my hometown more than once a day, and wish they were faster than driving, but the overall experience is far more pleasant than the cattle-herding that is modern air travel.

Anyway, count another for the “Anything but USAir” faction — unfortunately I’m from Pittsburgh so they control a lot of the flight in and out of my hometown, but after last Thanksgiving I’m pretty sure I will never fly them again. After a missed connection that was entirely their fault (two-hour delay on the first flight, the connection left the plane while we were on the between-terminal shuttle), they booked my pregnant wife and my two-year-old three rows apart for a plane four hours later and put me on standby for it. I did make it onto the plane, and the person who was booked next to Lil Zane agreed to switch with my wife (well, no one wants to be next to an unattended two-year-old), but that is not something that should be handled ad hoc. To add insult to injury, they informed us that they no longer give out meal vouchers for delays. And their mode of operation seems to be to lie to your face to keep you quiet until you realize how badly they’re treating you. (That was my experience in this fiasco, which the linked article severely understates; the check-in line at DFW that day took about three hours.) Delta treated us much better on the return trip; when we had to move out of an exit row, they seated us all together, and I noticed that our connection was actually held up a few minutes while they waited for a couple folks to catch the plane.

Anyway, for my favorite airline I was going to say Midwest, if only because I moved out of its service area in 2005 before I remember things really going to heck. But it seems to have merged with Frontier. So my favorite airline is convincing my family to visit us.

Not actually affiliated with whygavs.

I used to live in Philly and travel between Boston, NYC and Baltimore/DC fairly often. I loved the Amtrak Acella. And as far as it being slower than driving, when dealing with Northeast corridor driving, it’s faster.

by Cormican on Dec 4, 2025 10:27 PM EST up reply actions

Oh god the Northeast corridor is atrocious. I spent a year and half doing a long distance relationship CT to DC. Unfortunately since money was tight I often drove down whereas she often took Bolt Bus up. The few times either of us took a train it was just an all around better experience. No traffic, no hassle, just relax for a few hours and it was always quicker than the roads.

On a side note, when driving I refused to ever take I-95 the whole way down. Having to weave through/around NYC, Philly, Baltimore and DC is a nightmare. I typically would drive out to Scranton and take 81 down to Harrisburg and pick up 83 or head down 281 in NJ to 78 to 81 to 83. End of the day all that only took about an extra half hour when factoring in traffic but saved my $35 round trip in tolls.

Just an awesome airline. You have those cool purple lights, and internet, and chatting with other seats electronically. However, pretty much every european airline >>>>>>>>>>> any american airline. Cheap - dirt cheap. You have to wend your way through their webpage and their 8,000 add-ons (inclusive of a Seat Selection Fee, which you can delete.) They run flights from small airports to tourist destinations (I fly Stockton-Vegas once a year) and it’s a pretty standard discount airline experience.

Just flew Air France overseas in October/November for the first time, and I couldn’t rave about them more. Within the US, it has to be Jet Blue for me. As a former legacy carrier adherent

I’ve come to find myself a bigger and bigger Southwest fan.

When I lived in DC and SoCal, I used to fly almost exclusively American. When I was at my peak volume, I was gold level AAdvantage. However, that travel level dropped off a few months before 9/11 completely remade air travel, and so I took the double-whammy of losing the perks AND all the service cuts that became standard fare among the legacies. I soon realized that as a 4-6 trips a year traveler, I was basically paying a 20-30% premium to feel smug about flying a legacy carrier. If I’m not getting meals, entertainment or reasonably comfortable seats, why also pay higher fares and luggage charges?

In the last year, my sig other has had frequent enough travel on routes serviced only by Southwest that she has reached their highest frequent flier tier. As such, she can bypass the security lines (which matters in many of their terminals which aren’t St. Louis), gets priority boarding and free in-flight wi-fi, and earns free trips faster than I ever did as an elite member of American’s program.

I recently had a trip on which I needed a red-eye, which pushed me back to the legacy carriers for one flight. The experience with United was MISERABLE from start to finish, Their absurd seat pitch in standard economy that was implemented to create their even more absurd “economy plus” service - which is almost as nice as standard economy was a decade ago - left me more than a little irate. Their lousy online check-in tools were well below the service level I’ve become used to. Their a-hole frequent flier program which I’ve kept alive over the last few years with partner offers annoyed me by miscrediting miles. And their gate and in-plane crews really seemed to have stopped caring.

If something improbable happens in the next few years and I started enough international travel to accrue enough benefits to get back to what used to be the standard service levels on one of the legacies, I would consider going back to them for personal domestic travel. But otherwise, I’ve been converted to SWA.

Its has to be JetBlue for me

The Free direct TV does it for me, along with the free snacks, great customer service, and letting me fly direct into Long Beach so I could avoid LAX.

I also really like United, not only becuase they seem to fly everywhere that I need to go, but I have had good luck wth their CS. When my flight from SFO to IAD got canceled, and I was stuck in SFO for 6+ hours, they gave everyone in my group a $400 travel voucher because they couldnt get us on a flight to BWI that we werent supposed to be on anyway. I also love the economy plus seating, great for tall people like me.

Southwest the no bag fees is nice, but they dont really fly anywhere out of DCA/IAD, and I have no interest in going out of BWI.

Delta and American I have only flow once. Just the starard experience, Although I like the headrest on American, and the free food on Delta.

U.S. the one time I flew them I got the b!tchy flight attendant going to Hunstville. Myabe the destination was why he was in a bad mood, but still after your plane has been delayed for a few hours, not what you want to put up with.

I have never flow Virgin, or any international airlines
One airline I really liked, but no longer seems to fly anywhere is Spirit, they where really cheap.
