Random Predictions for a Thursday Night

Some random thoughts for Thursday evening.

How many of these predictions are crazy?

**Prediction: Brett Lawrie of the Toronto Blue JAys will win a Gold Glove at third base before his career is over. Crazy or not?

**Jay Bruce of the Cincinnati Reds will hit .319 with 37 homers and 114 RBI in 2012 and make a run for the MVP award. Crazy or not?

**Aneury Rodriguez of the Houston Astros will win 12 games in 2012 with a sub-4.00 ERA.

Make your own crazy (or not so crazy) prediction.

As an Astros fan

I assure you that the Aneury prediction is crazy. He really did not look good last year, I’m not sure he’s even in the rotation unless Wandy is moved (which is very possible)

yeah

When I saw him at AAA in 2010, I was seriously unimpressed with his stuff.

But I'll got with a more realistic crazy Astros prediction:

JD Martinez will hit 35 HR.

On that note

Jimmy Paredes will post a 20/20 season. I definitely think JD has the ability to post 35 jacks as well, though I see that as a career-year type total.

I like the Anuery Rodriguez prediction. Bold.

Despite his numbers this season, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him put up those numbers. He’s got the potential to be a solid #4 starter, and will only be 24 next season.

Bucs

Andrew McCutchen will hit .310 with over 30 homers, 100 walks, and make a run at the MVP. Pedro Alvarez will rebound and hit 25 homers and actually hit above .200 for the year. Tabata will stay healthy and hit .290 with 30 steals and not pull a hamstring jogging out to LF. The Bucs will finish with 83 wins.

Here's a few

A Major League ballplayer will become a crusader against mystical sports jewelry when he is garroted by his Phiten necklace after becoming entangled with a Chicago Cub fan while chasing a foul ball. In the aftermath, plummetting sales force the company to switch production to athletic cups.

Billy Butler will become the 31st player (preceded by ARod and Miggy) to reach 3000 hits in his career. Ironically, it will be on a sacrifice bunt attempt called for by interim manager Tony LaRussa. It is Butler’s first and only bunt attempt for his career.

John Lackey will become a spokesperson for Popeyes Louisiana Chicken.

Here are ten for you...

1. Nolan Arenado will be a top 5 prospect in baseball this time next year.
2. Joe Wieland will debut for the Padres in late May and go on to post an impressive 3.55 ERA 1.12 WHIP with 125K’s to 45 BB’s over 157 Innings
3. Joseph Panik will see time in MLB this season, ending the year as the Giants starting SS
4. The Yankees will trade for Gio Gonzalez, the prospect package sent to the A’s will NOT include Montero, Banuelos, or Betances.
5. J.R. Graham will pitch his way all the way up to AA this season and add to the young arms stockpile the Braves have acquired.
6. Manny Machado will show his true potential, being healthy all year, and hitting .291 with 31 HR between A+ and AA.
7. Reese Havens will establish himself as the Mets 2B solution for the next decade after he is called up in early June and produces to the tune of .285 12 HR 11 SB .380 OBP the rest of the way.
8. Hak-Ju Lee will struggle mightily after being called up in June, hitting only .220 for the season but somehow will stay in the Rays lineup due to his defensive genius.
9. Devino Mesoraco ends the season batting 5th behind Votto and Bruce. He hits 21 HR with a .275 average and 35 doubles.
10. Desmond Jennings produces… .285/.355/.455 17 HR 43 SB while Trout doesn’t live up to the hype (yet) … .265/.320/,400 11 HR 14 SB

You do realize tthat there is a zero percent chance Lee plays for the rays in 2012, right?

Beckham is ahead of him, and S-rod and Brignac will be given the opportunities. Add in that the Rays promote prospecta ultra slowly, and it would just be too hard to imagine.

by mr. maniac on Nov 11, 2025 10:07 AM EST up reply actions

You think they'll let Lee be blocked by utility players?

I agree it’s unlikely the Rays will move Lee quickly enough to reach the majors this year, but I doubt that players the like of those on your list will slow him down.

by PissedMick on Nov 11, 2025 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

And I guarantee you they will.

The Rays need to get the maximum value out of players, and will give both players their shots. Let us not forget that both were top prospects at a point and are still young.

Francisco Lindor will be in the majors by 2014 (atleast for a call up).

by JP_Frost on Nov 11, 2025 10:29 AM EST reply actions

Five predictions for 2012:

1. Jesus Montero ends up spending most of the early season floundering for the Yankees; after being demoted to AAA for a few weeks, he hits well enough to earn a mid-June injury call-up, where he finishes the season hitting .270/.320/.510.

2. Francisco Lindor plays his way into Top-10 discussion.

3. Danny Hultzen follows in Dustin Ackley’s footsteps by becoming the latest high-pick polarizing prospect after turning in a mediocre April and May, only to dominate the rest of the season. Much electronic ink will be spilled on this website debating whether he’s overrated or underrated. Someone will hold on fastiduously to their beliefs despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

4. Jesus Guzman continues to hit at the major-league level in 2012, putting up a .325/.375/.470 line midway through the year. Anthony Rizzo, still raking at AAA, forces the Padres to make a tough decision.; Guzman is ultimately traded to an AL team for a top-10 organizational prospect before the deadline.

5. Alex Anthopoulos will make another amazing trade, acquiring Allen Craig from the Cardinals in exchange for a long-retired Kevin Millar.

good topic

1. Derek Holland posts a sub 3.5 ERA for the season.

2. Mike Minor posts a sub 4 ERA for the season, locking in a rotation spot in the wake of the trade of D. Lowe.

3. Chris Nelson emerges as the Rockies starting 2B.

4. Wil Myers plays his way into the majors in July, coming off a solid AZFL, spring training, and fast start in Omaha. He struggles initially, going .240/.310/.410, but gets his feet wet.

by noelman31 on Nov 11, 2025 11:34 AM EST reply actions

For what it’s worth, I asked John a month or so ago (not sure in what thread) if Myers would start the year in AAA or AA, and he said that it could be AAA with a good showing in the AZFL (which happened) and spring training.

Five Seattle Mariners Predictions for 2012:

1. Dustin Ackley will be top-5 in second base WAR.

2. Felix Hernandez will win his 2nd Cy Young Award with a 18-6 record and a 2.75 ERA.

3. The Mariners will win 81 games.

4. Brendan Ryan leads the league in UZR.

5. Danny Hultzen is called up by June.

by Will Lofton on Nov 11, 2025 11:38 AM EST reply actions

Crazy predictions for 2012

1. Dustin Ackley performs so poorly out of the gate that he is sent back to the minors by May 15. He is recalled by the end of June and finishes the year outside the top 15 2B in WAR.

2. Matt Moore is called up June 1 and pitches well enough to garner a few Cy Young votes and finish 8th in the voting.

3. Ryan Howard misses all of April but is back in the lineup by May 15. He proceeds to hit 35 HRs for the year.

4. David Wright finishes 2nd in MVP voting in the NL after finishing off a monster season for the last place Mets.

5. Manny Machado is the #1 prospect on BA’s midseason list.

6. Trevor Bauer is called up June 1, pitches well for the first month but regresses in a huge way. He is sent back down in August for a couple weeks before being recalled in September.

I love how the Ackley supporters are so insecure

Say one bad thing about him and prepare to have someone jump down your throat. And it’s not like what I said was that bad - he has for a fact been a slow starter in his pro career.

But feel free to continue calling me a jag for daring to say Ackley is not the second coming of Jesus.

by guru4u on Nov 13, 2025 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

So poorly

You suggested he would not only start slow, but “play so poorly…”. This implies you have no faith that he can hold his own at the MLB level. Anyone who has no faith in Ackley’s ability to play baseball either is an idiot, or they dislike the guy. Since I can think of no good reason to not like Dustin Ackley— beyond being an Angel, Ranger or A’s fan— forgive me for lumping you in with the idiots who aren’t watching the guy play. Because if you were watching him play you wouldn’t be spouting off. Second coming? No. Capable MLB ballplayer? Why is anyone asking this question? Open your eyes.

If you think you hate me now, wait until you get to know me.

by Rudolf on Nov 13, 2025 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

by realitypolice on Nov 14, 2025 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

If that is your argument then you are correct!

You have chosen bad examples to make your point. Kemp couldn’t take a walk. Phillips was called up way before he was ready. Gordon was a mess. AGon just needed a couple tries to get going. Lots of guys struggle out of the gate. Hell, ARod was awful his first two tries. But that isn’t relevant.

Ackley didn’t scuffle in his MLB debut. He swatted lasers for three months. All of your examples couldn’t figure it out until their second or third try in the league.

Ackley didn’t have this problem. He started as hot as any player has ever started a career, and finished with perfectly respectable numbers— better numbers than any of the examples you provided.

If you think you hate me now, wait until you get to know me.

One Prediction for Every Team

AL East
Baltimore-Brian Matusz rebounds from his forgettable 2011 season.

Boston-In spite of more offseason additions, the Sox miss the playoffs again.

New York-Jesus Montero hits 25-30 homers on his way to AL Rookie of the Year honors.

Tampa-Matt Moore earns a spot in the rotation out of spring training and lives up to the hype, but narrowly misses ROY to Montero.

Toronto-Regrets dealing Travis Snider to Atlanta as part of the package for a pitcher, as Snider finally breaks out.

AL Central
Chicago-Dayan Viciedo has his ups and downs, but still hits 25 homers with a .240 average.

Cleveland-Ubaldo requires surgery, proving the Rockies sold the Indians damaged goods last year.

Detroit-Miguel Cabrera has another alcohol related incident, but returns from suspension to have a monster year.

Kansas City-Wil Myers returns to his 2010 form and sees the Majors in September.

Minnesota-A fully healthy Oswaldo Arcia breaks out in Double-A.

AL West
Los Angeles-Mike Trout doesn’t live up to the hype in the Majors, but hits well after being sent to AAA.

Oakland-Chris Carter finally puts together some Major League success following a mid-season callup and hits 18 homers.

Seattle-Alex Liddi wins the 3B spot, but hits .205 with 12 homers and 17 errors through June and Kyle Seager takes over.

Texas-Neftali Feliz gets another shot at the rotation and pitches well before being moved back to the pen late in the year to protect his arm, like Alexi Ogando this year.

NL East
Atlanta-Jason Heyward rebounds, but still his numbers are similar to his rookie numbers.

Florida-Mike Stanton hits 40 homers.

New York-Wilmer Flores finally gets moved off short, a move that should have happened long ago.

Philadelphia-After returning from injury, Ryan Howard struggles for the rest of the year.

Washington-Bryce Harper hits well for a short period after being called up, but goes into a long slump once pitchers figure him out. He then rebounds to finish strong.

NL Central
Chicago-Carlos Zambrano does not play another game with the team.

Cincinnati-Zack Cozart goes on to win NL Rookie of the Year.

Houston-Paul Clemens and Brett Oberholtzer get called up mid-season and make an impact as back of the rotation starters, allowing the team to deal Wandy Rodriguez.

Milwaukee-Zack Greinke wins the NL Cy Young Award.

Pittsburgh-Pedro Alvarez figures things out and hits .250 with 28 homers.

St. Louis-Allen Craig becomes a 22 homer guy, but still gets little credit nationally.

NL West
Arizona-Jarrod Parker makes the Opening Day rotation.

Colorado-This is the year that Eric Young finally gets significant playing time and steals 45 bases.

Los Angeles-Chad Billingsley rebounds from a bad year with a career year.

San Diego-Jesus Guzman continues to hit well all year for the Padres.

San Francisco-Buster Posey comes back from his injury like it never happened.
