The Yankees don't have a lot to work with this year, ranking 24th in total pool money. This means I will have to focus more on college, especially outside the 18th pick. Unless I go under slot on the 18th with an over-drafted college player, and use the savings to go prep in rounds two and three. But I am unlikely to do that, as it isn't something the Yankees ever really do.
Looking at the draft tendencies for the Yankees over the first four rounds, they are pretty evenly split between prep and college players,as well as between arms and bats. So I will try to stay balanced, picking one from each of the four groups of players. Fourth round is definitely college, given the limited bonus pool and lack of pick protection after the third round. They are tied with the Blue Jays as the team most likely to go high school in the third round. They love prep arms (especially in the third round), left-handed pitching (third most-likely to draft a lefty), and focus on the left side of the infield with their position draftees.
Given this type of balanced approach, I will likely go with the best player available at 18. Then I will adjust for rounds 2-4 based on who I pick in the first.
Here are the four players I am currently targeting in round one:
For prep bats, Nolan Jones looks the best to me, among those that should be available. The cold weather product plays SS but will likely move to third base has big power in his bat. He checks a lot of boxes for the Yankees. Backups would be Will Benson and Taylor Trammell.
For prep arms, Matt Manning is a dream get, given his stuff and the Yankees love for CA arms. But assuming he is gone, it comes down to the trio of Forrest Whitley, Joey Wentz, and Kevin Gowdy. Whitley could be gone as well, Wentz fulfills the Yankees love of lefties, and Gowdy is a CA kid. But for now, I'm focusing on Joey Wentz.
For college arms, my main target is Jordan Sheffield, with Connor Jones and Eric Lauer as back-up options.
And for college bats, Zack Collins would be my top target, followed by Bryan Reynolds and Matt Thaiss.
I will post a poll below, please vote on which option you like most at 18.
