Also in that game
Kevin Quackenbush struck out the side (I’ll allow you to find the names of said hitters yourselves) as he picked up his 8th save since promotion to Ft. Wayne.
In 14.1 MWL innings, he now has 26 strikeouts.
In 35 overall professional innings, he’s whiffed 59 batters, while putting 29 runners on base. He has allowed one earned run.

Thomas Shirley
He was drafted by the Astros last year, and has missed a lot of both seasons with injury, but to this point in his pro career he has 0 ER. 28 IP, 0.00 ERA and 41 Ks. I know it’s a small sample size, but it’s still pretty impressive. He’s going to night for Low-A Lexington, should be interesting to see if he can keep his scoreless streak going. He has a scoreless frame with 2 BB and 2 K so far.

A little bad luck, a little hittable...
Glad to see his K/9 rate increase - he was about 5.5 for his first half of AA time - but even though his ERA is overblown at 5.29, his FIP is merely 4.09. Just a half-season at AA, so maybe not much to worry about. His increase of his BB/9 rate (around 3.5 since 2010), combined with the hittability, is what worries me - too many baserunners.

by Matt0330 on Aug 26, 2025 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions
Well, they're in contention,
so it’s to be expected that Goldschmdit will give way to Overbay, just as Ryan Roberts will probably be shuffled around the INF in deference to Hill and McDonald. I think adding some vets to the mix makes sense under the circumstances, but it’s not going to help Goldy get into a groove. That strikeout rate is pretty obnoxious, and he’ll need more games like yesterday to convince Gibby that he’s not a hole in the lineup more nights than not.
by blackoutyears on Aug 26, 2025 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions
And I have to say,
it’s amusing that all the Goldy fans come on to laud this game while remaining curiously silent while he was 0 for 14 with six strikeouts and no walks before that. lol
by blackoutyears on Aug 26, 2025 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions
Clarification
I didn’t indicate that Arizona was correct/incorrect for operating with a platoon at 1b but merely intimated that Goldschmidt isn’t an everyday starter at this point due to the presence of Overbay.
by Matt0330 on Aug 26, 2025 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions
Right
I’m extrapolating from the fact that Overbay’s presence is eating into Goldy’s PT, and proposing some possible implications. Synergy! lol
by blackoutyears on Aug 26, 2025 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Not only is the strikeout rate obnoxious
The swinging strike rate on 4 seamers continues to climb into just insane territory. Now sitting at a cool 20% on the 90 he’s seen so far in the majors. Even guys with massive strikeout rates in the majors don’t swing and miss at 4 seamers nearly this much.

We wouldn’t have seen so many “he’s bored” defenses if he weren’t under-achieving. I don’t blame the doubters. Most of his value is in his bat, so unless he’s laying waste to all manner of pitching there’s legitimate cause for concern.

Is that established fact?
It makes sense, but how is it “well known”? Has Montero stated that?
by blackoutyears on Aug 26, 2025 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Would Montero stating it make it fact? ;)
It is a fact that many baseball believe that, and that’s good enough for me. From what I hear this is part of what has been happening with welters.
BTW - Montero would never state it, I believe that’s part of the ‘code’ because it would sound like you are blaming your pitchers for your lack of hitting.
Also, many scouts or baseball people mentioned that when he was struggling with his D his hitting was terrible. And when his fielding was better his hitting would start to take off.
by pedrophile on Aug 26, 2025 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions
If someone tells me
that their defense affects their hitting, then yes, it’s a fact. Any other assertion belongs to your college philosophy class, and is juvenile sophistry.
As for the rest, sources? Or are you just hanging around the cage at Scranton games as is your wont? Sounds like second-hand speculation.
by blackoutyears on Aug 27, 2025 1:38 AM EDT up reply actions
lol
A player could believe it affects their hitting but be wrong. And no, it’s not juvenile sophistry. If scouts see bad games defensively often paired with bad games offensively and also see decent or good games defensively paired with better hitting that is not philosophy.
by pedrophile on Aug 27, 2025 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Point missed
The sophistry is over whether someone saying the defense affects their hitting is a fact, not the impression of scouts. Nice to see you keep rolling down that path though. Why believe anything anyone says, or call anything a fact? I guess this is the point where I invoke the Munchhausen Trilemma and we close down the board and all go sit in a dark room for the rest of our lives.
by blackoutyears on Aug 28, 2025 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions
really?
I first stated that it’s well known, as in “many people in baseball believe it affects his hitting”. Then I stated it was fact that scouts believed this, not that it was fact it had a substantial affect on his hitting.
The statement about whether Montero stated it made it fact was tongue in cheek, read it again if you like.
“Why believe anything anyone says, or call anything a fact?” I guess we should never question anything here then?
btw - why do you have to be a dick when discussing things?
“Nice to see you keep rolling down that path though.”

“A player could believe it affects their hitting but be wrong”
That’s “tongue in cheek”? You may need to work on your presentation if that’s supposed to convey humor, sarcasm or facetiousness. I assume you meant this was tongue in cheek, “Would Montero stating it make it fact? ;)”, but the subsequent reference pretty much took the air out of that. lol

What do you think of him now that you've seen him in game for the Astros?
I still think there is a decent chance he breaks out next year and posts at least league average offensive numbers, which combined with his defense and baserunning would make him an ~3 WAR player.
by nixa37 on Aug 26, 2025 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions
He actually reminds of Bourn in a lot of ways
Even down to his swing, stance, and so forth. Obviously, he’s a poor man’s version right now, and probably in the future. Not quite as fast is the biggest thing, but that’s to be expected as Bourn probably has top 3 run tool in baseball. Schafer is still pretty speedy, maybe 65 run if Bourn is a legitimate 75 or 80?
Schafer has made some good defensive plays and seems to take good routes. He has an above average arm too. Being slower makes me think he won’t ever reach the BABIP or stolen base heights Bourn has.
Maybe a tick more power potential though (remains to be seen whether he can reach it).
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
by OremLK on Aug 26, 2025 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions
Completely different
body type, which is why I’ve always been surprised he doesn’t hit for more power. You don’t see Bourn and say there’re 12-15 homers in there somewhere, but Schafer has that look. Goes to show how important hitting approach is. Can’t hit homers if you can’t access power in games. Schafer should definitely hold CF down with ease.
by blackoutyears on Aug 26, 2025 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions
Yes, they do have different body types
That’s a fair point. I was looking at their swing path more than anything. Bourn’s is just slightly more groundball-oriented, to my eye, but there are some real similarities there.

by kyuss94 on Aug 26, 2025 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions
Nixa might know best,
but I wondered if Schafer ever looked like he was selling out for power at the major league level. Sometimes the guy who looks like he should hit for more power gears up too much. Bourn learned what his strengths were and played to them. Schafer may still have to learn that lesson.
Schafer’s always had a stiff, grooved swing when I’ve seen him. How does he look right now, Orem?
by blackoutyears on Aug 26, 2025 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions
Kind of hard to make that judgment
Haven’t seen him that much yet, and he seems pretty locked in right now—whether his swing has loosened up or he’s just getting stuff he can hit, it’s hard to say.
This hit looked pretty good in terms of going with what the pitcher gave him, though:

This never functions at work.
Have to take a look later. And we play you guys again at the end of September so I’m looking forward to getting another look at all the kids again then, including these new additions.

Watched it
It’s one swing, but it’s still got that armsy quality I think of with him, and his set-up (knees, posture) still looks stiff to me. Looking forward to a chance to see whole ABs.

Xander Bogaerts
1-4, double, bb - keeping his iso slg to hover near .250 for another day

Yeah,
I’m not too worried about the power. Almost half of his hits have gone for extra bases. I’m glad to see the walk rate still solid at 9%. Even a ~25% strikeout rate isn’t bad considering the context. 2012 could be a big year for him.

Brett Wallace
4 for 5, 2 2B
Hitting .359 in AAA, but no HR… I really want to believe in him but the power has to come soon. I think next year is his last real shot before they go in another direction.

he’s never shown much power… I don’t think that’s suddenly going to develop at the age of 25.
He has gap power but I don’t think you will ever see hit much more than 20.

.287/.396/.491
that’s just… glorious. I’d love for him to get hot in the last few weeks of his season and get to 3/4/5

wow
even though the California league is a hitter’s league (http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/minor-league-run-environments/) and San Jose is it’s most notorious part (same article), .331/.400/.505 is pretty impressive in HiA. He’s 23 and somewhat old for the league, but this is ver interesting.

Told you this the other day, but
He’s 22, not 23. Not out of the ordinary age range for high A.

Reading is FUNdamental
You may want to go back and revisit what the commenter on Justin’s original essay said about San Jose.
by realitypolice on Aug 26, 2025 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions
i read it
and even though San Jose has the highest K rates in the minors, it STILL produces TONS of runs. how does having a high K rate exclude a park from also having TONS of runs?
reading may be FUNdamental, but you may want to go back and think about what the commenter said.

He's had a nice year when on the field
Collins just said that Tejada is a front runner for the 2B job if reyes is back next year, but Havens will be ready for a shot too.
by blackoutyears on Aug 26, 2025 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions
And (also per Collins) if Reyes leaves, Tejada goes straight to SS...opening up the 2B race a bit
by dbreer23 on Aug 26, 2025 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions
Exactly,
though there seems to be a much better chance that Reyes stays than there did earlier in the year, right?

If Havens can stay on the field
I definitely think he’s their best option. Of course, he’s almost never on the field for an extended period.

When you're talking
Sellers and whoever else, I agree. Tejada is actually turning himself into a useful back of lineup hitter, especially if he’s at SS, where I could see him posting solid average offensive numbers for the position. If he’s at 2B, I’m definitely taking a long look at Havens, who has signficantly more pop.

Josh Slaats
7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 11 K
Continues to rebound nicely from his horrible first half (7.5 era in 37 IP) with a 2.64 era in 75 IP in the second half. The SO/9 ratio has also rebounded, and he is maintaining a very good GO/AO ratio as well. I think he could still be a solid 4/5 in most rotations.

Zach Walters
2 for 3 with two walks. Follows up a 3 for 4 day. Strikeout and walk rates have gone in bad directions since hitting Potomac, so here’s hoping he’s adjusting as he finishes the season.
