- Jake Thompson in the FSL for Charlotte (one of my favorite prospective ‘risers’ in ’11)

It depends on if he can start or not

He struggled as a starter in college despite a repertoire that suggested otherwise.

Good points

The promising K:B rate in his pro debut, proclivity for inducing groundballs & repertoire which you mention make me think that he should be able to stick as a starter. Sure, we’re only talking about 70 IP or so as a pro but the early data is pomising.

I think he could be a very good short reliever (as his FB would add a few ticks in a relief role & he seems to have a very good SL) if need be though should he run into any resistance in the near future for whatever reason.

by Matt0330 on Apr 12, 2025 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm certainly intrigued by him; I like him more now than I did a year ago at this point

But if there weren’t questions about him starting, he’d have gone higher last June.

Oliver

I’m a believer in Andy Oliver & think he’s a bit overlooked in a macro sense sometimes.

His velocity from the left side is very impressive (sits around 93-94 if I’m not mistaken) & I think he’ll be a solid major league starter if/when he firms up his control. It looks as though he’s on his way if his first two starts are to be construed as any sort of indicator.

by Matt0330 on Apr 12, 2025 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he'll be in the majors by May.

He doesn’t have ace potential or anything, but he should be a solid #3 starter who can K 7 or so per 9.

Agreed

With everything that you said really. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that he ‘dominated’ the NY-P league, but I’d say it’s fair that he was one of the top 5-6 pitchers on the circuit last summer behind Jake Thompson & (in my opinion) a couple of others. He was very thin last year but he has some potential to be sure (good offspeed stuff already @ Auburn in ’10). If memory serves, he got a pretty nice bonus out of HS for a mid-late round pick & Toronto has to be pleased so far.

Latest report

As reported on Padres.com:
Two of the Padres’ top prospects — outfielders Donavan Tate and Everett Williams — were injured Tuesday when they collided in a game while playing for Class A Fort Wayne.

Randy Smith, the Padres’ director of player development, said in an email that Tate and Williams were “banged up a bit but there was no structural damage.”

Tate, the third overall pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, is likely headed to the disabled list and could miss 7-10 days with a sore left knee.

Williams, a second-round pick in 2009, will likely miss between three and five games with a sore right knee.

“Both guys were playing really well,” Smith said. “… Unfortunate, but lucky it was not worse.”

Tate was hitting .316 in the first six games of the season for the TinCaps with two doubles and two RBIs. Williams was hitting .300 with three stolen bases.

Well we knew he was going to strike out

He has two 80 tools and he deserves to be a top 10 prospect. How much contact he’ll make (the early signs: AFL and spring training were surprisingly good), whether he can tone down his aggressiveness at the plate, and how much his body grows are the real questions with him.

& already in full season ball where he is (I think) a year & a half younger than the teammate who is closest to him in age? I think he’ll be fine - his natural power is prodigious & I don’t think he necessarily ages as a guy who strikes out an absolute ton either.

A couple randoms

Derek Dietrich: 1-2 with his 2nd HR. He’s going to be destined to be a bit undercovered this year as a college bat in single-A, but he’s still 21 (barely below the July 1 cutoff, so more like 21.5) years old and swings a decent bat. Now at .455/.500/1.182 through the first 4 games.

Carlos Perez (Atlanta pitcher version): 5 IP, 6H, 4R (2 ER), 2BB, 5 K. The K’s are encouraging in the early going, the fact that minor leaguers are making hard contact off his stuff less so.

Will Middlebrooks: 2-4, 2B.

First, you guys clearly labeled him as no prospect on BB there - love and enjoy Bulpen banter, by the way.

Secondly, you are one of the rare people who could turn Sands hot start into something vaguely negative. We don’t even have to watch his season at all with your reasoning eh? No matter WHAT he hits it will be because of the ballpark eh/

I’d argue that the HR factor in Great Lakes is less of a factor than you are making it out to be. Being 22 is a big factor but, the MWL is sssdtill a very tough hitting environment, and HR hitting environment.

Its laughable, isn't it?

I don’t meen to tease the guy but, its comical to speak of park effects after 4 games…

then speak of park effects of his sucess in a tough hitters league last year

then to try and act like he likes him as a prospect when he puts 128 players higher than him.

dude

you are going too far.

Alskor mentioned park effects. Those are facts, not opinions. None of us know how much it will affect his outcome. But to dismiss the facts or dismiss the person posting the facts seems shortsighted or rude.

sands playing with the cards he's been dealt.

All he can do is hit but people will still dismiss him because of either his age (previous argument) or the league and homepark he plays in. All of these things are out of his control. He’ll just continue to rake though.

by npurcell on Apr 13, 2025 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

that doesn't change the fact he played in very favorable parks

when he plays in some league average parks we will have a better idea. No one suggested dismissing what he has done. Just that it was a factor.

by pedrophile on Apr 13, 2025 12:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Interesting info

Did you know that Jerry Sands played half his games, had more pa’s, and hit half his homers at AA Chatanooga? Neither did Alskor apparently.

it also has a 3-year park, homer factor of 1.02 - its a nuetral park!

The entire point isn’t even correct Man. Its very strange to mention the Albequerque park factor after a week of baseball, and not mention that.

I love Jerry, and yeah, I do think he gets some bad rep from scouts (Law said he’s the second coming of Billy Ashley). But I’m really over where he’s placed on lists and am firmly confined in the “just wait and see” approach.

Jerry is hitting in the most home-run happy park in MiLB, right now he’s making the most of it. I’m waiting to see what he does on the road, that OPS isn’t going to last forever.

My Bad

… you did, I appologize. The numbers I have off of BBTF have Chjatanooga as 1.02 for Homrs though and .89 last year so, I don’t really know who is right there.

I’m sorry for being testy last night but, I think the whole idea is flawed a bit. Sands hit for trendous power in a very tough league, the MWL and in the SL, in a park that I dont think is biased, and has started the year with more power.

Perhaps it makes sense that he just has tremendous power?

I like hyperbole, it's fun

But seriously, what does Sands need to do in the minors to prove he’s a legit prospect? Apparently no matter where he plays his numbers won’t mean anything, or at least that much.

He doesn't need to do anything to prove he's a legit prospect

He’s already a legit prospect. I was just urging caution in response to a joke about the HOF. He has played in some homer friendly parks and leagues too easy for him. He’s a good but not great prospect IMO.

Its easy to divide the world of prospects into those who are executing right now and those who aren’t, but we know that’s not a terrible effective way of projecting who will be the best major leaguers at all.

Ok yeah, i don't think anyone is realistically arguing he's a top 25 prospect

But because of his power, his ability to play rf or lf (though everyone just pegs him as a 1B unjustly), and his ability to walk (though i think he has just one so far this year, he’s been too busy hitting homeruns :D ), if he has a big year again this year not only could he be a top 50 prospect next year, I think he could make the majors by June or July.

by tmannino on Apr 12, 2025 11:55 PM EDT reply actions

He was a tough prospect to get a read on coming into this season

On the one hand, Whitenack didn’t walk many guys and didn’t give up many HRs last season. On the other hand, he had a fairly anemic strikeout rate and he was fairly hittable. When he was drafted, he received a lot of buzz for his knuckle curveball, but as a RHP who sat in the high 80s and sometimes touched 91-92, he always struck me as one of those guys who’d have to prove himself at every level without much room for error. While the guy was projectable at 6’5, 185 pounds, he had a fairly narrow frame. There were some questions about how well he could fill it out and add velocity.

I know some people who liked him, but I didn’t have him in my Top 30. I’m waiting to hear how he looked before reconsidering that.

He should start catching soon. And yeah, so far so good with the bat but he needs to keep this up for awhile in order to rehabilitate himself. He was arguably the biggest disappointment in the A’s system last year except Michael Taylor.
