MiLB Gameday 7/15

Figured one was not posted yet so here is a quick rundown of some of the notables. I dont really know any of the guys in the lower minors so be sure to add them in today.

AAA- Alex Torres, Kevin Millwood, Corey Kluber, Chris Tillman, John Danks (rehab), Kevin Slowey, Wade LeBlanc, Jesse Litsch, Mike Montgomery, Jay Jackson

AA- DREW POMERANZ  (AA Debut), Jacob Turner, Henderson Alvarez, Chris Withrow, Randall Delgado, Casey Kelly, Shelby Miller, Garret Richards

A+- Noel Arguelles, Anthony Ranaudo, Rob Rasmussen, Drew Smyly

Pomeranz vs. Bryce Harper I find that matchup interesting.

You would think

A team with a spacious home ballpark should be willing to part with a decent reliever for him. My guess is his stock is too low right now to grab Bell unless the Twins add some. Maybe Adams straight up? The market for quality RP is going to be pretty interesting given how the offseason went

It will take the same if not more to get Adams than Bell

Bell is a FA after this year. Adams is team controlled for next year.

Eric Hosmer

Just dumped a can of gas on the Twins Bullpen fire with an absolute 2 run BOMB off the batters eye in dead center off Capps at Target Field. Stayed way back and then swung out of his shoes on a belt high fastball very impressive hand speed and hip rotation and balance. Quietly having a very solid debut

About time

Need a CFer and SS just wasn’t happening. IIRC there have been rumblings in the past that CF could be a potential spot for him. Think it was Klaw who said that.

Easy

With Delmon back in left Thome At DH vs a RHP Mauer catching and Valencia Nishi and Casilla all looking very good of late the best line up is with Cuddy at 1B and Plouffe in RF because his bat is better than Hughes. Plouffe has showed he isn’t a MLB caliber SS, while Nishi has proven to be at least a reliable one

Potentially

But he doesn’t have the kind of speed to make up for miscues. So, he better take to the outfield quickly, get good reads off the bat and take good routes in order to stick.

I suppose he's got time

Not like he was going to be able to break in at 2B on a regular basis anytime soon. Shortstop was obviously not quite going to happen on an everyday basis.

I don’t think many if any believe that Green has “ideal” speed for CF, but he’s a pretty good runner with long legs that should let him cover more ground than initially appears.

Rob (Michigan): Why all of the hype surrounding Carlos Martinez? What type of player (comparison) does he project be?

Ben Badler: Guy throws up to 100, sits in the mid-90s with sink and control and he just annihilated the Midwest League in his U.S. debut. He’s not as big as Michael Pineda, but I think his stuff right now might be better already, or comparable at the very least. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still risk, but it’s a freakish arm.

2 for 4 with a HR and 1 K.

That’s his 15th HR of the year, and he came into today with a AA slash of 295/412/544 (OPS+150). How legit is he?

by Croatoan on Jul 15, 2025 10:47 PM EDT reply actions

very legit

He doesn’t stand out in terms of athleticism, but he has a well-rounded set of solid tools and he really does everything he can to max them out from a performance standpoint. He’s not a burner, but he runs well enough and does a good job of picking his spots. He’s not a slugger, but he works counts to find pitches he can drive and then hits them hard. He doesn’t quite have the ideal CF toolset, but he makes good reads and doesn’t seem to struggle too much with bringing in most things that come his way.

One concern is that he is much better against RHP than LHP, but having seen him both this year and last he’s definitely improved his approach against southpaws. I think he’s always going to be one of those guys who kind of operates under the radar compared to better known, more athletic, and flashier players, but he sneaks up on you and I think he’ll end up as a solid major league regular, maybe a bit more than that.

The range has been good,

and tonight (7/19) he made two very nice plays on throws to 2B by Hanigan to squelch attempted steals. The average to slightly below part is the arm, at least by major league SS standards. He actually seems to be changing his throwing angle, though, and I wonder if the coaching staff has been working with him. The elbow was up tonight and the throws more on line. Still yet to see him throw after making a play significantly to his right. All in all he holds his own and Phillips hasn’t skipped a beat on turning the DP with him. At bat he is all level swing, though his home run was legit (8-9 nine rows up) and he just missed on a pitch tonight that got to the warning track. His leg lift was the same on the homer as on his other swings, so he wasn’t loading up. He just cleared his hips and let the hands do the rest. Good bat speed.

Pommy is good,

but far from awesome. Still a 2/3 ceiling for me, and more 3 than 2. There’s still a lot of effort in the delivery, and the command isn’t quite good enough to project ToR.

Thanks, I honestly wasn't sure.

Now that I think about it, I have noticed you’re pretty high on Pom. I guess I don’t see the upside. As Jeff said, his change up and command have to improve greatly to get to a #2 ceiling in my opinion. Also, am I the only one who’s not too impressed with his FB? Plus velocity from the left side, sure. It just seems rather flat from the limited times I’ve seen him.

I’m still not convinced Pomeranz isn’t a reliever in the end. The overall command really does need to take some big steps to be an effective MLB starter.

He really isn't that small though (5'11")

Armed with a plus fastball and curveball. I do agree the delivery has effort, I read one report that he made it similar to Lincecum. Anyways, I sometime get annoyed when people write off guys from future roles based on size. It is an uphill battle, but a battle worth fighting before you are deemed a loser.

by John Black on Jul 16, 2025 11:48 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

5'11" is small for a pitcher

Sure their are starters in MLB that are that height, but it is definitely an uphill climb. If I had to guess, I would say the average MLB starter is around 6’3". It’s amazing how tall a lot of those guys are.

by guru4u on Jul 16, 2025 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

yep

Oswalt and Lincecum are always listed as examples of short MLB starters, and they’re both 5’11". Of course they can be pointed to as proof that guys at that height can succeed as starters, but there aren’t too many major leaguers in that range.

by jibs on Jul 16, 2025 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

I can deal with a short pitcher

But when you combine that with a high effort delivery, that’s when I get turned off.

by Jeff Reese on Jul 16, 2025 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah,

no comp in terms of delivery for me. Lincecum’s is much smoother. Thornburg and Peacock both showed great stuff at the Futures, but I can see why both get reliever tags. I can also see Law’s point about seeing what Thorny could do in the MIL ’pen, which has been pretty much their only glaring flaw. Instead of flirting with K-Rod I might have tried the cheaper, in-house option for a week or two.
