Rangers prospect, David Perez...
David Perez has fanned 22 and walked one in 13 extended spring training innings, permitting three runs on 10 hits. The Dominican Summer League opens today, but Perez won’t be going back after he posted a 1.41 ERA in 13 DSL starts last year, striking out 62 and walking only eight in 64 innings and limiting opponents to a .202 batting average (allowing one run in his final 45 innings last summer, on 20 hits and four walks with 42 strikeouts). Word is that the 18-year-old’s fastball has touched 98 in Surprise this month.

He should start at short-season this year.

Why?

Injury? Or is Ed Wade needlessly bringing him up to not only start his clock early but also try to win two more games this year?

Here’s betting the latter…….

Understood

As an Astros fan, I would hope they return him and let him have a full year in the minors.

No reason to bring him up this year…..

by CabreraKilledMyChildhood on May 28, 2025 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions

He's Ready

He’s ready as he dominated AAA batters in his last few starts. Most of top prospects skip AAA altogether regardless of age. I commend Ed Wade for making this call as he knows that Lyles is much better than anyone the Astros are rolling out to the mound today.

I agree the K/9 is not great, but we know that’s not his game. He pitches backwards like Ian Kennedy and not afraid to pitch to contact.

Lyles may not a be true ace in the traditional sense, but I would not be surprised if he has a year or two of All-Star caliber season (if healthy).

Says it’s only for 2 starts? I guess they could keep him up if he does well, and send somebody else down. Really this isn’t any different than Julio Teheran pitching 2 spot starts for Atlanta.

will be interesting to see when he gets the call to Seattle… not like they have many bats blocking him. Any reason to think they may want to keep him down there a bit longer to work on his glove?

Gerrit Cole

Watching him vs. ASU, while a snapshot, makes me hope the Pirates go in a different direction. No scout, obviously, but he looks extremely hittable in the first three innings. Even his outs have been hit hard, in combination with a HR.

I’m sure I saw him not at his best, nor what he projects to be, but someone with that stuff should not get hit as hard as I have seen.

by CabreraKilledMyChildhood on May 28, 2025 7:59 PM EDT reply actions

Didn't watch the game

But I’m guessing that he still employed the “I’m going to throw my fastball belt high in the middle of the plate and see if anyone can hit it” approach?

"he was a lot nastier i thought"

The 98-mph heater he blew past Zach Wilson with the bases loaded in the fifth was a beaut, and then he just overpowered the next better, Matt Newman, with heat to get out of the jam. But yeah, Jeff, too many belt high FBs with the slider bailing him out in the early innings. Changeup still pretty much MIA, which is the real reason he gets into trouble.

He’s still a guy I think has a chance to make those teams who pass on him regret the decision. Get him to command the FB to both sides of the plate and you’ve got an ace. Rendon is still the only guy I’d take over Cole without a qualm.

I’m not sure how good a debut it was, watching the game. The Cardinals were making good contact on him all night, but he survived thanks to some great defense and some pretty fluky plays, like a double play where the ball bounced off the mound into Tulowitzki’s mitt.

That said it wasn’t too bad for a debut, but he needs to miss more bats.

Good tools, great make-up, good stats, and solid potential.

I could see him s an above average defender at SS with a good bat (.290/.360/.440 and too many Ks).

He isn’t top 50 material yet, but top 100 seems right.

by mr. maniac on May 28, 2025 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

the K’s are still a bit high with a less than stellar bb total. Especially for someone who was pegged as a top of the order hitter whether it be in the 1 or 2 slot. But coming into this season everyone had just about written him off but still had a sliver of hope left. Well he’s definitely exceeded expectations so I’m pretty excited about this development. I’m rooting for him (i am bias because i own him…lol) I wouldn’t put him top 50 yet either but if he continues this and heats up for a while, he could sneak into a few lists but def. top 100 now. Especially if he could force brignac to 2b or possibly shift over to 2b.

by PhillyPhanatic on May 28, 2025 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

especially considering the Rays have all but given the SS position to Sean Rodriguez

I wouldn’t factor Reid Brignac into the SS discussion at all into the future of the Rays. He has unfortunately been a huge bust.

The K’s are a little low for the expecations that some have had for him. But he’s holding his own which I definitely like. I think the K’s will come as his confidence builds and his body and mechanics grow and become more refined. Also, since he’s just in low A he could be focusing on just throwing fastballs or working on refining his windup which could also be a cause in the lower then expected K’s. I still really like this guy.

by casejud on May 29, 2025 12:01 AM EDT reply actions

any concern about the high pitch counts?

Not being sarcastic, just curious. On one end, it can be argued that its helping him build arm strength. However, there’s also the argument that he’s possibly enduring a lot of wear and tear at an early age.

by John Black on May 29, 2025 12:16 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Personally?

It doesn’t bother me at all. id be concerned if he had a lot of 5.2 Innings/ 120 pitch games. He spreads it out over 9 innings most games. Its not the btotal pitches that worry me, its when a pitcher has a 25-30+ pitch inning. Bauer just dominates. Id be more concerned about Gerritt Cole’s struggles or Anthony Rendon’s injuries.

Trevor Bauer is completely, totally healthy and getting better and better, start by start.

I brought this up a week or so ago

and listed his pitch counts for the whole year and nearly everyone was around 140. I don’t think it is a big deal because it is a very old school approach (the high pitch counts) and if he takes care of himself with modern medicines and such he should be just fine. Like the other poster mentioned it isn’t like he is laboring through tough innings, he just strikes out a bunch of guys and goes 9 innings every night. He is a early 20th century ace reborn.

BB:K rate for Brown in HiA isn’t all that much to get excited about. He IS, though, batting +.360 and Slugging .527 with 28 SBs. But, shouldn’t he be doing that as a College Hitter in HiA?

He’s got the tools and the skills are coming, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. Hopefully the Giants will challenge him (perhaps SOON) with a jump to AA. THEN we can see if he still hits like this.
