would you do this trade?

I need a big time bat...Would you guys do this deal?

Jacoby Ellsbury and Felix Hernandez for Prince Fielder

It's a 12 team league we keep 19 players a year so Big bats are hard to come by. Ive been debating this for 2 weeks now...........
Any adivice or even just a yes or no answer would be appreciated.

take out King Felix and replace him with another pitcher. You are giving up too much in this deal. Also, why Fielder? You can’t get a different big bat for less. There are a ton of good power hitters who you should be able to get that hve less name recognition and should give you stats close to those Fielder produced. A player like Nelson Cruz could be had for much less while giving you the big bat you desire.

Big Bat?

In prince fielder’s 4 year career he has had 2 big years and 2 good years. If he was a consistent big bat or if you think last year was more of an indicater of what he will average, i would think about it. That being said. There is no way i do this trade.

by svigen on Jan 18, 2026 4:37 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

In a vacuum

But if his best 1B bat is Adam LaRoche and he has excess pitching, I could see him making this trade. What are the categories (Prince is a monster of OBA and SLG)? It would be a lot to pay but if power truly is a kept commodity and Prince’s .900+ OPS helps in multiple categories, I would not hesitate to pull the trigger. How many players had a higher OPS than Prince last year? How many had more HR? How many had more RBI? I understand it’s only one year but also look at his age. When he smoked 50 HR a few seasons ago, he was the youngest player ever to do it. His power is the stuff of legends and yet it was his batting eye that the managers took notice of when he was named Midwest MVP for Beloit.

Well...

considering Fielder is barely top 5 at first, I think he could come up with a much better deal than this. I probably wouldn’t even do these two players for Pujols unless I had amazing depth at pitcher and CF.

i wouldnt do this deal…u can find a bat somewhere else and without giving up felix

Oh dear God no.

Don’t even think about that trade. Unless your league has some strange format where they don’t count stolen bases.

In most formats I would consider this trade a team killer. You’re giving up one of the best young arms and the league leader in SBs for like… The fifth best 1B at best.

+1

what he said. Don’t underestimate what Ellsbury gives you with his SBs! Also, we need more information about who else you have on your team (another poster above said this too). You need to look at who you currently have at 1B and who you currently have in CF/LF and your SPs. If you have all of the best outfielders and all of the best SPs and nobody playing 1B, then this may be an okay trade, otherwise I wouldn’t touch it. I agree with what another poster said above - try to get somebody with less name recognition.

well i dont know about untouchable

i mean if you are going to win and make deals everyone should have a price…but yes, he should be offering Prince and others for Felix

Giving up way to much like everyone else has said. Though all this Prince barely Top 5 talk is a bit of nonsense imo.

No...

There is nothing more to say, I would debate a Ellsbury straight up for Fielder deal (I bet guys who can steal 60 are harder to come by than big bats), and definitely wouldn’t trade Hernandez straight up for him. Am I missing something salary-wise here?

Hey guys thanx for the replies…laast year with this team I was 2nd in pitching and and 11th in hitting in a 12 team league..I was 2nd in stolen bases.. we can keep 19 players…I am pretty hesitant to do the trade but i do feel pretty confident in my pitching…
Hope this helps give more of an idea what I am dealing with…

why not to do it

the reason you finished 2nd in those two categories is because of those 2 players. without them things would be very different for you

by svigen on Jan 18, 2026 11:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You should...

stay with this team for next year too. You could maybe make 1 or 2 smalller moves, but anything big would be a mistake. You have a bunch of young players like Posey, McCutchen, Fowler, and Ellsbury that are all likely to improve. What you should do is find someone to round out your bullpen for cheap and a power hitter at third. Try making a trade of something like Zambrano for Aramis Ramirez if you can. Even throw in someone like Valbuena if you have to. Also, I would get rid of Thome and Sheffield if I were you. They aren’t going to do much next year.

I’d be hesitant to make the deal. Keep in mind Fielder is going to continue to get less athletic with age. If he signs with an American League team next contract, he may be pushed to DH sooner than you think.

by MightyMoose on Jan 18, 2026 11:17 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

No

You lose way more than you gain in this trade….and you build around top end studs like King Felix in keeper leagues.

I would think you have enough young talent to make the right deal and pick up some hitting. Guys like Fowler, Bumgarner, Latos, Kazmir would be who I might try to deal to the right owner to improve my hitting without really hurting my main point getters. They may not get you stars but could bring back solid players to improve the areas you need.

You could easily trade Fowler and keep Gutierrez as they are just about the same player (actually Fowler has to battle for playing time and Gutierrez is a clear cut starter so I most likely would keep Gutierrez anyways).

by Rkdrip on Jan 19, 2026 12:26 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

way too much for Fielder in my opinion; you’d drop major points in Ks, ERA, WHIP and SBs for marginal gains in the power categories, in which one player makes less of a difference than the former categories.

by PrincetonCubs on Jan 19, 2026 12:46 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

In a traditional 5X5 league...

Prince was the 4th most valuable position player in the game last year. http://baseballmonster.com/

BUT - Ellsbury was 14th!

AND Felix was the 3rd most valuable pitcher.

That’s just way too much to give up.

by alskor on Jan 19, 2026 12:55 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Also

much of Prince’s value was tied up in a very high HR total.

Not saying he can’t repeat it… but man, I would definitely bet that Ellsbury steals that many bases or that Felix strikes out that many guys before I bet Prince matches that HR total…

by alskor on Jan 19, 2026 1:27 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

One more point

Ellsbury, Felix = NOT THE PROBLEM.

You need to upgrade your periphery players. Try focusing on having no below average options. Its not your core that’s the issue, its weaknesses on the outside.

by alskor on Jan 19, 2026 1:28 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

So you would bet that two guys who have only done something once (with their next best season not that close), would do it over a guy who has done it twice? I’m mainly just having fun with you but the statement itself seems a bit odd…

yes

by Rkdrip on Jan 19, 2026 2:05 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

great point there on why you believe that…

Honestly though Felix and K’s is a pretty safe to repeat, and I’d take that bet. However 70sb is pretty rare, I can only think of Reyes (who has only done it once) that has recently. Especially when one has proven it wasn’t any type of fluke that he can hit 46+hr

by hybrid on Jan 19, 2026 2:15 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

16 of his HRs in 2009 were categorized as "Just Enough"s

http://www.hittrackeronline.com/detail.php?id=2009_164&type=hitter

12 of his HRs in 2007 were “Just Enough”s, too. http://www.hittrackeronline.com/detail.php?id=2009_164&type=hitter

It really wouldnt take much of a fall off for him to lose a lot of his fantasy value. Ellsbury and Felix are both younger and still getting better. Fielder is a big, fat, old players skill type who more or less is what he is. 36 HRs in 2010 would still be a prodigious amount but would represent a huge hit on his value. For instance, in 2008, he dropped to 63rd best position player - that was with 34 HRs.

Is he the most valuable out of the trio of him, Ellsbury and Felix? Maybe. Does that mean someone should trade those two for him? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

by alskor on Jan 19, 2026 2:52 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not arguing the trade is even close, as I already commented on that. I was merely having fun with your “bet”. But for arguments sake, I bet he also in turn hit a lot of balls to the warning track that by “luck” didn’t go out. Point is a power hitter is going to hit a lot of deep balls, it’s obvious that some are going to be “just enough”.

by hybrid on Jan 19, 2026 3:32 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ellsbury

Stole 50 in 2008 with 70 less ABs and he was pretty much a rookie that year.

He hit better in the 2nd half of last year and his OB skills are on the rise . He had 9 BBs in Aug and 14 in Sept/Oct compared to 5 in April and 6 in May. His pre All-Star OBP was .347 and post it was .363 (and his 2008 OBP was .336).
He looks to be getting better and even if he doesn’t he already has shown a steady diet of stolen bases in his first few years so what would make you think he cant repeat 70 steals?

He was caught only 12 times last year and 11 in 2008 so unless he picks a major injury, I dont see him slowing down. I get to see him every game as a Sox fan and he is so fast its silly.

I would be more worried about a large all or nothing type hitter. One minor leg injury can sap a large hitters power very quickly and when they carry that much weight its hard to recover fully. The last few yrs I have watched David Ortiz hit a zillion balls to the warning track while he carried a few lingering injuries a fast singles/slap hitter would have been able to play through and not have a big drop in his productive areas like steals.

Ellsbury gets a minor knee injury may only miss a week or two and he still steals 50+

I’m very familiar with Ellsbury and I like the kid a lot. That said 70sb is a lot, Reyes is the only one can think of that has 70+sb season in the last 20 seasons. Also I would be a lot more worried about a runner like Ells, all he needs is one thing with his legs/feet/ankle/hamstring and it slows him down a lot. Teams are a lot more likely to play it safe and not let them run 100% at first.

BTW even though he was on base more in the 2nd half of 2009, he ran less. That said I think the kid is pretty much a lock for 60sb

by hybrid on Jan 19, 2026 3:58 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Podsednik

Did it in 2004 and Womack in 99 as well as a number of guys in th mid 90s like Lofton, Grissom and even Brian Hunter.

The steroid era kinda killed the running game but who knows what the next generation will bring and guys like Reyes, Ellsbury and Desmond Jennings may bring the SB back into a major part of the game.

I do not think Ellsbury is a better fantasy player than Fielder right now. I am only questioning the “70 steals fluke” comment.

I can see him putting up 2 or 3 more 70+ steal seasons in his future though with a bunch of 50 and 60 SB seasons in between.

how good will Pods be in 2010 with K.C. ?

League average….
a probably starter for the whole season?

I say not quite…

How do I tell my kid brother about Desmond Jennings? (he loves the Rays)

NO. Fielder’s good, but Felix should be untouchable. Felix for Fielder + someone else + a prospect- maybe.
