Suggestion Box
Coming up tomorrow morning: an interview with Boston Red Sox farm director Mike Hazen.
In the meantime, use this as a suggestions thread. What kinds of things would you like to see here in 2010?

This May Be Asking Too Much
But I would like more involvement of you in the fanposts. I’m not trying to sound like a jerk, but most other SBnation forums have the moderators active posters. It would be great if you could engage in some conversation over on our side sometimes…
Hey guys, I run a music blog. alternative, powerpop, punk, electronica, screamo, etc etc, check it out. http://muzikdizcovery.blogspot.com/ artist interviews and many other stuff. free cookies! (not really, but still) :D

Potpourri/Hit and Run
It’s not baseball season yet, but I really enjoyed those posts during the season and I’d like to see them continued in 2010.
As for the meantime, maybe you could do a couple of pre-season college posts about who you like going into the year and who you will be particularly interested in following.

Maybe a feature where you follow the new draftees.
I think there is a lot of disagreement over what certain statistical accomplishments mean especially in players’ first years. Maybe every so often (monthly or so would be nice), you could provide some insight on which players seem to truly rising in the eyes of minor league evaluators. I find that many times after only a few months, a player perceived to be weak or flawed in certain areas is vaulted up the ranks of minor leaguers because of new data (whether that be stats or new scouting). There seems to be plenty of instances where those few months of data outweigh all previous data (especially for players coming out of high school). It is hard sometimes for me to figure out which numbers are fluky and which numbers are a sign of serious improvement (or that the previous scouting was just not right). You could pick out a few players from the 1st couple rounds, some from the mid rounds and some true rising status players from the latter rounds. I think even at this point in the calendar, there are some serious debates over first year player performances and what they mean, so each installment could be pretty fresh and informative.

Tip
I don’t think you should disallow people from posting on here if they are critical of your ranking system.

Enigmas at the ML level
I mentioned it in the other thread, that if you do a ML graduate version of this, it might be interesting to take a look at some of those players who are no longer considered specs, and have thus far struggled at the ML level.
Guys like Maybin, Gordon, and Brandon Wood quickly come to mind.
Maybe you could evaluate why you feel they were once highly touted, yet have struggled at least so far.
Another idea that might be interesting, is to evaluate those players that have gone through TJ surgery, who are active major leaguers. That is obviously a growing list, and might be a bit of work, but it would be interesting to see the numbers before and after. Also, being able to take a look at the overall success of the surgery since it is so often wrongly considered as just “routine” these days.

Also, a flip on the enigma idea
— players who have succeeded in MLB far beyond their projections (using that term very loosely). It would be interesting to see if there are any patterns here that could shine a light on gaps that could be exploited.

Something with international signed prospects from the last couple years.
Possibly how some of the prospects who got decently sized bonuses did in the lower level leagues recently. Surprises, disappointments, guys to watch for, etc. A lot of them don’t get the press that draftees do so less is known about them until they get to the mid to upper level minors.

This is something else I was considering suggesting as well. Maybe some sort of comparison of the highly touted international signings, what types of international amateurs seem to do best/worst, and so forth.

I enjoyed your series last year
where you examined prospects position by position over the last decade or so to look for trends. Some more analytical stuff like that would be great.

Review of ratings from 5 to 6 years back
Players that you rated 5 or 6 years ago, now are likely to have 3 to 4 years of major league service. Take a look at say all the A- rated players for say 2003 or 2004. Which ones became A- or better major league players? Which did not? Any common threads for those that did not such as strike zone judgement.

I’d love to get back to doing a radio show. I just don’t know how to go about GETTING a show again.

It's not XM of course
but the guy runs the Denver Broncos SBN site does a weekly online radio show I believe, I haven’t checked it out but I’ve seen links for it. Might be something to check into, I for one would make time to listen to a weekly show you’d do.

Prospect Smackdown!!!
Just some ideas…
C. Santana vs. J. Montero
J. Smoak vs. P. Alvarez
M. Taylor vs. D. Jennings

I think Carter/Taylor would be better after that fanpost poll with Carter crushing Taylor which surprised me. I like the other 2 pairs though.

But...
other than Taylor and Carter being in the same organization they aren’t very similar.

I think they're a better match
than Taylor and Jennings are. I’d also say that Santana vs. Posey would make more sense than Montero, since he’s likely not a catcher long term. If Ackley wasn’t moving to 2B he and Jennings would make a good pairing.

+1 on Santana/Posey
I’d actually like that more, pretty sure Montero ends up a 1B/DH but they both have a shot at sticking at C for a while.

According to past discussions here, a lot of A’s fans seem to think Carter is more likely to end up in OF than 1B.

don't take offense to this
please don’t, but i find these incredibly boring and have said as much in the past.
“player A and player B both have awesome power, but A’s is a tiny bit better!!!”
“player A and player B both are terrific athletes, but slight advantage to player B there”
if were going to do smackdowns, i’d much rather see from lesser hyped players that we don’t know quite as much about.

Crystal Ball
I used to love the crystal balls, hate to see them fall by the wayside. I’d be interested in seeing what you think could be the big ’spects about to graduate - heyward, strasburg, montero, etc

History of Your Top Pitching/Hitting Specs
I’m not positive if you’ve done something like this before (probably), but what about going all the way back to your very first year of evaluations, all the way up until the 2006 season. Take a look at every player you named as the top pitching or hitting spec during that time frame, and how their career progressed.

I'm a sucker for retrospectives
Every year just before the NFL Draft, I go back and look at the Draft from 10 years earlier. I look at all the first rounders and determine good/bad pick and what went right/wrong. I like 10 years for baseball, since even a high school pitcher will be in his late 20’s by that time and should have a solid track record and be through the injury nexus. 5 years after Kerry Wood was drafted he was the next Roger Clemens, 10 years after he was drafted he was more like the next Mark Fidrych.
I find it a fun, informative exercise for the NFL Draft, and I imagine it would be equally interesting here (if not moreso, given the high variability in the MLB draft with 18 year olds and far more projection at play)

Ideas
I always enjoy the looks back at top prospect groups from years past. Like the 1993 top pitching prospect series from a few year ago. Something on top pitching prospects from 1999 or 2000 would be interesting, as that is long enough ago that most of those guys should have flamed out or made something of themselves.
I like the Sleeper Prospect posts you’ve done in the past, and I’ll echo part of doublestix’s comment above about preferring to see less heralded prospects in the Smackdown series. Guys like Stolmy Pimentel, Chris Dwyer, John Lamb, Zeke Spruill, Wilmer Font, Robbie Ross, or TJ House on the pitching side. Hitters like Logan Forsythe, Brent Morel, Chase D’Arnaud, Danny Espinosa, etc. The more we can learn about lesser known players the better for all of us I think. Maybe even more obscure names than these, I just threw out some guys I like and would like to see more in depth material on.

Top 20 Lists...by position
What I’d really like to see is Top 20 lists by position and even better, top 20 under 25 by position. I’d really like to see how you stack up, for example, the minors top 20 shortstops against each other.

Bring back players with Major League experience
I’d be curious to get your thoughts on where some recent prospects would rank with minor leaguers. For example, would Brett Cecil rank ahead of Kyle Drabek on the Jays? Would David Price rank ahead of Jennings or Hellickson?
I know Kevin Goldstein does this on Baseball Prospectus, but I’d like to see your rankings.
