Brad Holt
What are your thoughts and ideas about this young arm. 2009 was not very favorable to him. He still seems to have a live ( strong ) arm. A return to form in 2010? Long term prospects ever more then a back of the rotation guy? MLB timetable 2012? Over/under. With his powerful arm does he switch to the bullpen? I doubt he has closer stuff so would he be stuck in middle relief? Thank You

Mets
Holt was shut down on August 14 for some reason, which could mean anything when you’re dealing with the Mets. I know he sprained his ankle in July, but I don’t think it would have been bad enough to skip Winter Ball. Some people said he had a tired arm, and he did tend to fall apart after five or so good/great innings. It’s a little concerning because one of his bet attributes as a starter is said to be maintaining “easy,” heat late into games…
John gave him a C+, which isn’t totally unfair. I’d say B- until we know what the struggles were really about, be it injury or lack of secondary pitches. Of course this is the Mets though, and nobody should be surprised if he needs TJ surgery before Spring Training is over…

I think he also skipped instructs this winter and the Mets were not pleased
Tough to tell exactly whats going on there.

I wonder
I’m not sure what the deal was on him skipping instructs, but it’s obviously unusual.
Was the ankle even actually bothering him after July?
Was he upset with how the Mets handled it?
Were there differences over something else?
If it’s the ankle, might pitching on a bad ankle have caused other problems?
I have no good info on any of this, just message board chatter, speculation, and innuendo. I also saw somewhere that the Mets weren’t pleased he skipped instructs, so they obviously didn’t think there was any health issue preventing him from participating.
From what I saw in the FSL, he’d be at least a B-. Secondary stuff certainly still needs improved consistency, command, but I’d think he’d still be a decent #4 SP without too much improvement. And, you can see where more might be possible. I’d be inclined to keep him in the rotation given he sustains velocity well, and has 3 pretty good pitches to work with. I doubt command and pitchability would be much better in the pen.
