Jeri's brother Jack is missing...his car has been found in a creek and he may have been taken away by a flash flood. No further details at this time. Blogging will be intermittent for awhile.
Thoughts and prayers for the family are appreciated. Thanks.

I hope everything works out well. Family comes before baseball so please take all the time you need to ensure Jeri and her family are okay. I hope that her brother is soon found safe and sound.

how bad is the flooding in midwest?
i’m surprised since i wouldnt expect this during the summer season.
on the west coast we have to deal with earthquakes
thoughts w/ your family…good luck
by Asfan4ever723 on Jun 29, 2025 2:00 PM EDT 0 recs
you'll see soon
basically, estimates have as much as half of the entire nation’s corn and soybean crop underwater, up to 25% of the nation’s pigs killed in the flooding, and, at last count, 5 ethanol production plants…..all those you’ll see in your grocery bills….those farmers not flooded out will likely see $8-10/bushel corn, whereas in comparison many farmers were overjoyed seeing $5.50 corn just last fall….your corn flakes will likely be $5 per box now, and nevermind the result on milk prices as well when feed prices go up for dairy farms….nevermind that the incredibly wet spring in the upper midwest has presented even those places not dealing directly with flooding to lose acres upon acres of farmland because it’s too wet to plant…
the high water is common in late may/early june in many of those areas as spring rains drain down the river, but flooding certainly is not….basically, the impact on the trade market is going to be like saudi arabia deciding to no longer sell any oil at all….it’s a drastic hit to the WORLD food supply….nevermind that there are more homes destroyed and people forced out of their homes than katrina could have dreamed of….and the flooding is not done as the water continues to work its way down the mississippi….farmers around st. louis are in complete panic mode as they were some that could actually get to most of their fields this year and were looking at reaping great rewards for that (something that this country rarely allows to happen for farmers)....
and all this flooding is on top of a sever weather season that has been above normal in tornado and severe wind activity already….oh, and there have been two earthquakes in the midwest this summer, too ;)

50%
of the corn crop alone would be about 45million acres the USDA current est is about 2 million acres in the entire country.

acres?! lol
my dad is VP of the national corn growers….corn planting is WAY down…..there are more fields dedicated to corn this year than last, but much less land that has been able to be accessed within those fields….they were already nervous about corn production levels before the flooding…acres means nothing in corn production….bushels is everything….and early returns suggest yields will be drastically down….
so, to summate….fields may be up, but acres are way down, and the best looking corn in the entire country based on early testing is all underwater now….nevermind that your acreage numbers are hugely off considering that a significant amount of those acres are planted as test fields for next year’s seed or already dedicated to overseas trade, which will not suffer….we’ll cause our own to suffer shortages rather than upset any trade agreements that have already been established….and those smaller countries without standing trade agreements will also be left out in the cold….

Currert USDA
est have the crop crop at 87 Million acres. I don’t know what you’re talking about test plots and seed corn do not affect it that much. Considering I’m farmer myself and my dad markets about 75,000 acres as a consultant I think I know what I’m talking about. The 2 MM acres means a lot or why else did corn prices fall 30 cents on monday? I’m in MN in probabaly what is some of the best farm land in MN and we are heading for a bumper crop. 220/ bushels an acre or better.

yes you are
southern minnesota has some of the best corn in the country right now….but that doesn’t mean the rest of the country has the same luck….virtually the entire dakotas has had to go to short-term corn, if able to get into fields at all because of rain, and other places were burned up bad by early 90+ temps before the corn was formed enough or blizzards that hit after the first wave of planting in the upper midwest and froze a surprising number of fields, according to tests….flat out, the highest yielding corn ground year-in, year-out is currently underwater, and that’s huge….
the corn estimate was based on a cnn telecast, so half very likely was overstating it….especially as the statement was “as much as half”....but there are tons of lost acres across the nation this year….you happen to be in one of the very few windows of ideal corn production in the entire nation….it’s not a pretty sight….my mother once had the job of reporting to the usda acres planted…..they consider the whole field as planted for disaster purposes….if you had 100 bushel yields but only got 50% of the field, your field would be considered 50 bushel yield for any disaster payout portions…..and right now that’s what’s falsifying the pure acreage numbers….many of those fields are nowhere near fully planted….and once again, many of those that were planted were planted with short term corn because farmers could not get into the field until quite late, and any farmer knows the short term corn varieties give nowhere near the same yields….

I agree that it's prices are going to go through the
roof but it’s not all doom and gloom I’m sure the comsumer’s are wishing we had more than 750MM Bushels of carry over and corn will still reach about $8.00 again some time this fall or higher.

8.00
corn has sold for over 8.00 at points already….just hasn’t opened or closed that high yet….my dad’s comment yesterday was that the usda overstated planted corn acres in order to temper the groth of corn prices…..and soybean prices, i believe, maxed out the amount they could rise in something like 20 of the last 30 days of the market…..that’s just nuts….gonna be some irked people in cali that can’t afford their tofu

Hope Jack turns up healthy and in a safe place.
Regarding the comments/questions about the flooding:
It’s very, very bad this year. The cities where I live (Iowa City) and work (Cedar Rapids) have been devastated by the floods. In particular, lots of homes in Cedar Rapids will have to be torn down. Some of the flooding was outside of the 500 year flood plain (meaning that there was a < .002 probability of the area being flooded). Since banks require flood insurance only on homes with the 100 year flood plain, many didn’t have flood insurance (nationally, very few people outside of 100 year flood plains have flood insurance simply because the risk is so tiny). I’m afraid that many of those folks are going to be looking at bankruptcy.
The problems really started in the winter. Nearly every city in Iowa had record or near record snow totals. When spring comes, the snows melts and eventually flows to the rivers … add in above average spring rain totals, and suddenly there was a very big problem. Kind of a “perfect storm” from a flood perpective.
The floods of 1993 have been a measuring stick around here, with people saying it would never flood worse than it did in 1993. Well, this year was not only worse, but much, much worse.
Luckily, my own family was only minimally affected.

A couple things
We finished design and construction of a level 3 high hazard dam last year for the creation of a 20 acre lake in Lincoln, Nebraska. Due to the drainage area and the drought conditions we had been experiencing we told the owner based on our study it may take up to 15 years for that lake to be full.
The lake is now full and the dam has consistent discharge within in 9 months of completion.
I was headed to the O Royals game last Friday when a storm went through Omaha. This storm hit so fast no one saw it coming. Thousands of people were outside when it hit, either at the game or in Memorial Park for a concert that night. The storm knocked out power for over 100,000 people and cancelled the game. 90 mph straight line winds toppled almost 100 year old trees in South Omaha. One those trees fell over and entirely blocked a 4 lane road (60 foot wide).
Link with some pictures of the storm and aftermath:
