Discussion Question

My last discussion question didn't turn out quite the way I intended, due to poor wording on my part. So I will do better this time.

If you could have Colby Rasmus or Cameron Maybin for your favorite team starting in 2009, who would you pick and why?

Is money a factor?

Just kidding.

Even though I have Rasmus ranked ahead of him, I’d take Maybin. There is superstar upside there that Rasmus doesn’t quite have. I think Rasmus is a safer bet to realize his ceiling, but I’d take the gamble on Maybin - even if he doesn’t max out his tools you still will have a fine player.

+1

The gambler in me also agrees with taking the guy that has a higher upside rather than the safer pick.

I'd take Rasmus

Starting CF next spring? Thank you!

Rasmus.

Better at AA than Maybin at a younger age and I’m not all that disillusioned with his wobbly season at AAA last year as a 21-year-old. Cameron may have more upside, by Colby’s done more with his tools so far.

Double A

Both played double A during their age 21 seasons according to firstinning.com

Rasmus turned 21 at the end of August

which is in the second half of the year. It’s an arbitrary system, but then again the difference of a few months isn’t that big of a deal anyway.

Maybin

Without a doubt. In comparing the players side by side, Maybin’s visage is clearly superior. With him as my team’s starting centerfielder, the marketability potential of my club has just soared - not only does my centerfielder look better than yours (do you know if he’s still wearing braces? That’s like an extra ten marketability points) but he also appeals to a wider demographic. Think about it: when suburban junior high kids emulate their favorite centerfielder, which sounds cooler - pulling a Maybin or pulling a Rasmus? “Pulling a Rasmus” sounds like a gastronomical anomaly.

I’m seriously contemplating not posting this…this post was meant to be an exercise in satire in light of some the amusing responses of the prior Hamels vs. Price post. Ah, what the hell. Hopefully John doesn’t hate me for it.

I know people are going to be diveded here

but Id say there’s really no bad choice. Theyre pretty equal.

I took Maybin

One of the biggest things for a young player is to make adjustments. Maybin began 2008 with a .735 OPS while striking out 33.6% of the time. In his following 3 ‘full’ months (May, June, August), Maybin’s strikeout rate topped at 29.4% while falling all the way to 19.3% while his lowest OPS was .793 with the highest sitting at .974.

While his walk rate took a marginal hit, it still maintained a strong level which indicates some future success.

In addition, there was a report which said Hanley gave Maybin some advice. I’m not going to take time comparing the two hitters, but statistically, Hanley and Maybin look similar.

As for Rasmus. He’s still a strong prospects, obviously, but I wonder if he is more Brad Wilkerson then Jim Edmonds. Rasmus’ 2008 age 22 season is eerily similar to Wilkerson’s 2000 age 23 season.

That’s not a knock, Wilkerson had a very fine start to his career and was considered by most to be the ‘better’ (more valuable) piece of the Soriano trade. Obviously we know how that played out.

I do like the improvements that Rasmus showed from April to June, but I would have liked to see more.

took maybin

upside is huge….has a skill set that i’d like on my squad…and that takes nothing away from rasmus, whose upside is lower, but feasibility of fully reaching it is probably higher….

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

I Picked Rasmus...

…because I like left-handed hitters and I don’t like strikeouts. Playing the devil’s advocate though I think Maybin has the potential to be the better player because he’s younger, he already has more Major League experience then Rasmus, and his numbers are already better. Can I change my pick?

Next year... I'd take Rasmus

Maybin has tools out the wazoo but Rasmus is closer, IMO

by NateHST on Oct 28, 2025 1:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

"Closer" Yes, but...

Where does he play?
You’ve got Ludwick and Ankiel entrenched in the outfield, and based on contract commitments, the Cards could conceivably not bring Rasmus up until June, if not later.

By comparison, I’d say it’s about 85% likely that Maybin is starting in the outfield for the 2009 Opening Day.

The question was regarding each player on your favorite team

which is the A’s, who have about a bajillion outfielders right now. I’d still take Rasmus

Outside of Gonzalez

Is there that sort of ‘franchise’ outfielder whom Maybin wouldn’t beat out in Spring Training?

I voted Maybin for health reasons

I think they’re pretty indistinguishable as their substantive abilities go.

I will take Rasmus

I figure if I take Rasmus I get his crazy dad thrown in for FREE!!!!!

Why does Maybin project to have a higher ceiling?

Did I miss a scouting report somewhere?

Space.

It's a problem we face.

So we never go anywhere.

We just stay in one place.

Younger

He’s younger, and I guess has slightly better tools.

I’d take Rasmus because I pretty much agree with you though.

by supermets on Oct 28, 2025 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I went with Maybin

but really, the difference here is slim. I don’t know how much closer to big league success Rasmus is in light of his 2008. Both are still very good prospects with a mature approach at the plate, plus power potential, and speed.
