More Shadow Draft Thoughts

Maybe I'm too quick to dismiss going for pitching with my Shadow Twins....considering the crop of decent bats that should still be available in the second round. How about this?

14) Josh Fields, RHP: Successor to Joe Nathan?

27) Reese Havens, SS-3B: Move him to third base immediately.

31) Whatever college outfielder is left here, would love Eric Thames

Or how about Thames at 27 to make sure I get him, then Conor Gillaspie at 31? Another option would be to slot a high school guy, hitter or pitcher, at 14, then fill in with safer college picks at 27 and 31.

The whole Shadow Draft process isn't just a game. It helps me organize my thinking about ranking players for the draft.

Not a bad spot

Number 14 isn’t a bad spot to sit this year. At this point is seems that Posey, Beckham x2, Alvarez, Crow, Matusz, Smoak, and Skipworth are the hot names at the top of the draft. That leaves a nice group that could slot in from 9 to 14 to the Twins. Sticking to the college ranks Alonso, Scheppers, Hunt, Friedrich, Fields, and Weeks will all still be available and could be justified if their name was called by the Twins. There may not be the dominant player in this draft but there appears to be some nice depth through the first half of the first round.

scheppers and hunt

you really think those two are going to be available at 14? i think neither one has a chance of making it. i am pretty sure the cardinals would love to get one of these guys, but i doubt they even make it that far. if one of them does happen to make it to 13, there is no way he is slipping past the cardinals.

Skipworth

Can somebody explain how the high school catcher is ranked this high? That’s an extremely tough position as a lot more time has to spent defensive than other positions.

Doesn’t Mesoraco’s struggles this season lower Skipworth’s hype??

skipworth

i don’t see what mesoraco has to do with skipworth. yes they are both high school catchers, but that is about it. skipworth is from a warm weather state and was ranked highly coming into the season, mesoraco was from a cold weather state and shot up the rankings late. skipworth is also doing things that no one in the history of california high school baseball has done. he has a ton of talent, and i think he deserves every bit of the high ranking he is getting.

Skipworth

Skipworth has an elite bat and projects to hit power and average at the big league level. Overall, he’s said to be the best prep catcher since Joe Mauer, and thus he is a better prospect than Mesoraco was last year.

kyle russell?

I think that’s his name—the big power hitter from Texas. How ‘bout him?

As many predicted

He has struggled to make contact this year.

He is hitting 270ish with Ks in 1/3 of his at-bats. 13 homers at least though.
He opened the year VERY, VERY horribly and was at .233 with three homers on April 9

He also had one of the worst Cape stints in some time in 06

He looks like yet another college 1b-of who got overrated by putting up big numbers.

Haven...

I he going to hit enough to stay at 3rd?

I like your first mock better

but it’s just personal preference I guess. It’s your mock though, I just don’t know if I like taking a RP that high.

Also you are the only person I’ve heard talk about Thames much at all. When are your next picks? It just sounds like a reach to me at 31 but again I haven’t heard much about him yet. That could change in the next 2 months.

+1

Gavin Floyd, ‘nuff said, draft hitters early and often. (Not to rip Floyd because he actually looked good this year but the Twinks have also been shut down Garland, Padilla, Gaudin and Tomko this year. Not exactly a list of Cy Young candidates.)

Shadows

If he’s there at 14, I’d take Beckham (college version), then Posey. If both those bats are gone, I’d take Hunt. I have no problem getting Gillaspie, who is a nice fit for them, and hope maybe Wallace is there at 31.
So,
14. Hunt (If no Beckham or Posey)
27. Gillaspie
31. Wallace

Posey will go #1

Of this I am almost positive. Beckham is working his way into the top 6-7. Hunt would be tempting, but he really doesn’t fit the Twins mold of drafting strike throwers. However, in John’s shadow, it makes sense, as he has a ton of talent

Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Harold Ramirez

I’m jumping on the Harold Ramirez bandwagon. I think I’d even jump on selecting him at 14 rather than hope to get him at 27.

3B isn’t solved for the Twins and if he can stay at SS even better. I like that he has some college experience.

Does anyone know much about his plate discipline? I haven’t heard anything bad, but I also haven’t heard anything extremely positive.

wait...

not a college player is he….

well whatever, I still like his talents

Shadow draft

If either Skipworth or Posey are still around at 14, I’d take him- that would allow you to move Mauer to 3rd so he’d stay healthy. I’d also probably jump on Thames at 27… he may be shooting up draft boards soon.

The Twins

Actually have an absolute glut of CF’s, 3B, and C in their system now. John’s system is short on catchers if I remember right, but the Twins have guys like Wilson Ramos and Danny Rams in the low end of their system right now. Posey will go in the top 5 (very probably #1) and Skipworth would fall into that category of really high upside catchers in A ball. We look at holes at the big league level and forget that they might not be holes in 4-6 years when these guys would be making the show.

Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Fields

Not sure I understan the rationale of drafting a player as a closer replacement. Does that ever really pay off? Are there a lot of examples ofHS or College closers being groomed throughout their minor league experience strictly as closers.

I would think you draft pitchers on their ability to pitch… try to get them more innings, not less, so they can focus on developing 3rd-4th pitches, game situations, etc. Maybe at AAA you start looking at a guy as a closer because he’s having difficulty in later innings, or is limited to 2 plus plus pitches with maybe a showcase 3rd.

My initial thought is someone like Meloan in LA… last couple years was groomed as a closer, but is now viewed as a breakout starter. Just think looking at a draft pick as an MLB closer is a little close-minded on his long term prospects.

If it wasn't for disappointments, I wouldn't have any appointments.

2008 Twins Draft

John,

Based upon previous Twin drafts ($$ - see 2007 1st pick CF Ben Revere) and the
fact that you have three picks within the 1st Round, here is what I would
recommend.

14. 3B/RH Ethan Martin
Other Options: LH Christian Friedrich, RH Tim Melville, 2B Jemile Weeks

Notes: If Melville or Martin falls this far, they would both be excellent
prep picks. They could also draft for need and try to work out a
deal in advance for Weeks (2B/Leadoff hitter), or wait and try to pop
him at 27.

27. 2B Jemile Weeks
Other Options: LH Brett DeVall, IN Reese Havens

31. SS Tyler Ladendorf
Other Options: OF Eric Thames, LH Tim Murphy
