BREAKING NEWS: Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras killed in car accident

Consensus top 5 prospect Oscar Taveras of the St. Louis Cardinals was killed Sunday night in the Dominican Republic.

Heartbreaking and tragic news has emerged from the Dominican Republic as news broke of Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras passing away in a car accident. With the news just now breaking, details have yet to be released, but what is known is that Taveras was with his girlfriend at the time of the accident, and she was killed as well.

It's definitely something that will tear at your heartstrings as Taveras was only 22 and was in his hometown of Puerto Plata when the accident occurred. General Manager John Mozeliak made a preliminary statement through MLB.com's Jen Langosch (Twitter) saying "Obviously, we have deep condolences for his family. We are still waiting for more details before issuing a full statement."

Once more details emerge we will be sure to update you. In the meantime, our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the Taveras family in this horrible and tragic time. RIP Oscar Taveras.
