Congratulations to the San Francisco Giants and our number 6 rookie coming out of 2010, Madison Bumgarner. Bumgarner would undoubtedly move up a couple of slots if we had a do over, as both Jason Heyward and Carlos Santana were ranked ahead of him, and it's pretty clear that Bumgarner has passed them both. However, the other 3 still have a strong case to be made for their high rankings: Buster Posey, Stephen Strasburg and Giancarlo (then referred to as Michael) Stanton. Pretty strong rookie class and good job by us in identifying the top ones, although #16 Wade Davis has certainly made a name for himself.
Round 7 voting is done, and we decided that Oscar Taveras would have had the 7th best career among last year's rookies. That's what we lost as baseball fans, although the loss to family, friends, etc. is, of course far more than that. Taveras got 27 points, to handily beat Jake deGrom with 12 points. Marcus Stroman got 9 points. Kevin Gausman and Yordano Ventura each got 6. Two points for Javier Baez, and write in candidate Taijuan Walker. One point each for Rougned Odor, Travis D'Arnaud and, by write in, Kevin Keirmaier. Zero for Nick Castellanos..
1. Jose Abreu 1b Chicago White Sox
2. Xander Bogaerts SS/3B Boston Red Sox
3. Masahiro Tanaka Pitcher New York Yankees
4. Mookie Betts 2b/OF Boston Red Sox
5. Gregory Polanco OF Pittsburgh Pirates
6. George Spinger OF Houston Astros
7, Oscar Taveras OF St Louis Cardinals
Although I haven't gotten close to voting for him yet, I have to admit that I'm kind of surprised that Castellanos hasn't found any support as yet. Absent write ins, he'll be back around the 12th round. We'll also temporarily drop Rougned Odor and Travis D'Arnaud. As each got one second place vote I'll try to get them back on a round or two sooner than that..
Having gotten a pair of votes, we'll bring back Taijuan Walker. In honor of the World Series win for the Giants, and his big defensive play last night, we'll bring back Joe Panik. We'll also return James Paxton. Next round I'm expecting to add Odorizzi and Billy Hamilton..
Until then, this leaves as temporarily dropped:
Jake Odorizzi 0 votes (round 3), Danny Santana 0 votes (round 4), Colin McHugh 0 votes (round 6), Billy Hamilton 1 vote (round 6), Rougned Odor 1 vote (round 7), Travis D'Arnaud 1 vote (round 7), Nick Castellanos 0 votes (round 7)
We are also adding Dellin Betances to the ballot for the first time.
Players who are still on the list to get their first time on the ballot are Kolton Wong, Ender Inciarte, Kevin Kiermaier (1 vote round 7), Ken Giles, Jackie Bradley, Jr., and Roenis Elias. Absent write in votes, I'm inclined to add them in pretty much the order I have them listed. If you want someone sooner, or someone else, please suggest below..
As a reminder, voting is by +1 for your first choice and +2 for your second choice. Three points will be awarded for each +1 vote and 1 point for each +2 vote.
So, who is your #8 prospect among last year's rookie class?
